The first song from the film CHAAND CHAKORI (1945), jogan banaa ke piyaa chhod gayo galiyon mein was posted on the Blog about 6 years back. Since then, no more songs from the film were covered in the Blog. In the write-up to the first song from the film, Atul ji had mentioned that very little information about the film was available online. At that time, I doubt whether any songs from this film was available on YT as I find that the first and the only song out of 13 songs from the film was uploaded by Atul ji on YT.

Even after such a long time, out of 13 songs in the film, to the best of my search, I have not found any other song of the film on YT. This shows how obscure the film has become over a period of time. Fortunately, more information about the film is now available online including the review, pictures of a few scenes and also mp3 clip of one more song from the film which I got only a few days back.

CHAAND CHAKORI (1945) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and was directed by Kidar Sharma. The star cast included Surendra, Mumtaz Shanti, Shanta Kumari, Ashraf Khan, Kesri, Sheikh, Jugal Kishore, Marutirao Pehlwan etc. According to the box office report, the film was 6th highest grossing film among the films released in 1945.

The story of the film culled out from the review published in March 1946 issue of ‘Filmindia’ is as under:

Chakori (Mumtaz Shanti) is a beggar girl who meets Birju (Surendra), a flute seller. They fall in love. They start singing together on the street. Chakori is the ward of a Madaari (Kesari) who loves her and wants to keep her with himself. Apart from singing together, Chakori helps Birju in selling his flutes to the prospective customers with the help of Bhagwan (Ashraf Khan), an eccentric philosopher. Madaari becomes jealous of Birju and finds an opportunity to send him to jail for 3 months.

After his release from the jail, Birju misses Chakori and he starts misunderstanding that she may not be interested in him. Days passed and Chakori has now graduated from the street singer to a well-known stage dancer under an assumed name Neelam. As it usually happens in the Hindi film story, some coincidence brings them together. They meet now with a different financial status. Chakori is now rich with the fame she acquired as a stage dancer while Birju is still a poor man selling flutes. The usual misunderstanding between them arises. But at the end, everything gets sorted out and they are united.

From the story of the film, I am surprised how this film became the 6th highest grosser in 1945. I remember to have read sometime back that Mumtaz Shanti was known to be a good dancer and those days film audience used to watch her films in the theatres mainly for her dances. The twist in the story – from a street singing girl to a stage dancer may have been probably done from the box office consideration.

The film had 13 songs written by Wali Sahab (6), Pandit Indra (6) and Kidar Sharma (1) which were set to music by Bulo C Rani. As many as 7 songs were sung by Ameerbai Karnataki.

Here is the second song from the film ‘man mein basaa le piyaa ko’ sung by Ameerbai Karnataki. The song was written by Wali Sahab.
