It is an interesting exercise to find out what well known HFM personalities did on their debut.

Based on their achievements, one may well think that people started succeeding right from the beginning of their careers. In most cases, that is hardly the case, though.

When we consider music directors, then Shankar Jaikishan are the most famous example of music directors who made a smashing debut as music directors on their debut. That was with “Barsaat” in 1949 and they did not have to look back since. But that was not the case for most other music directors.

Take the example of Roshan, for instance. He tried very hard to get a grand opening, but his debut movie “Neki Aur Badi” (1949) alongwith its musiic failed to do well. Unlike many who just moved on from their opening failures, Roshan took this failure badly. He in fact contemplated suicide.

Fortunately, better sense prevailed. Kidar Sharma, who had signed him up in “Neki Aur Badi” (1949) signed him up again in “Baawre nain”(1950). Roshan had learned from his experiences for the first movie and he did a better job in “Baawre Nain” (1950). The movie as well as its music did well and this enabled Roshan to get a foothold in HFM. With time, he would establish himself and would produce some memorable songs for the next 17 years till his untimely demise in 1967.

Today (14 july 2017) is the 100th birth anniversary of Roshanlal Nagrath (14 july 1917-16 november 1967), known just as Roshan. So today is the birth of Roshan !

In his 17 years long career as a music director, Roshan composed music in 56 released movie (plus one unreleased movie). He composed 424 songs in all in Hindi movies. This blog has 321 of his songs. Thirty of his movies are already YIPPEED in the blog. So we now have songs from just 26 (plus one) movies to cover in the blog.

His debut movie “Neki Aur Badi”(1949) had ten songs in it. Six of these songs have been covered in the blog. Today is the fit day to discuss a few as yet un-discussed Roshan songs.

Here is the secventh song from “Neki Aur Badi”(1949) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rajkumari. Kidar Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan, of course.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

I have been able to locate one more song from this movie sung by Amirbai Karnataki and others (hamen na roko).

That leaves two more songs from the movie that do not seem to be available. These songs are-“Ae ree jaa le aa more kaant ka sandeswa “and ” man mein prem ki jyoti jale”. Even the details of singers of these songs are missing in HFGK. So unless these two songs get located, this movie will remain unYIPPEED in the blog. I request our knowledgeable readers to keep a watch for these as yet unavailable songs and sound us out as and when these songs become available.

Song-Dil waalon o dil waalon (Neki Aur Badi)(1949) Singer-Rajkumari, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil ki baaton mein aana na aa
bhoole se aankh ladaana na
khud mit kar phir pachhtaana na
na na na
dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil waalo
o dil waalo

baanki tirchhi chitwan waale
baanki tirchhi chitwan waale
ye dikhte hain..aen bhole bhaale
ye dikhte hain..aen bhole bhaale
kahin pad kar tum in ke paale
jeewan ko rog lagaana na
na na na
dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil waalo
o dil waalo

pehle to mann bharmaate hain
pehle to mann bharmaate hain
phir pakde haath na aate hain
phir pakde haath na aate hain
tum rowo ye muskaate hain
yoon apni hansi rulaana na
na na na
dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil waalo
o dil waalo

pehle si nibhaane ki reet kahaan
pehle si nibhaane ki reet kahaan
lav karne lagey, ab preet kahaan
lav karne lagey, ab preet kahaan
ye miss miss kare hain, meet kahaan
pal chhinn ka dhokha khaana na
na na na
dil waalo
o dil waalo
dil waalo
o dil waalo

These lines could be like this :

baaki ?? le. – Banki tirchi se to manwa le

yoon apni hansi bhulaana na. – moon apni Hansi udaana na

lab karne lage ab preet kahaan. – love karen lage ab reet nahaan
ye mit mit kar hai meet nahaan. – ye Miss Miss Kar hai Meet kahaan
?? ka dhokha khaana na. – Palchhin(?) ka dhokha khaana na
