Band Kaliyon Ko Gudgudaayegi

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. ‘Shehzaadi’ (1947) is a film about which not much information is available online except that it was produced under the banner of Shalimar Pictures owned by WZ Ahmed and the film belonged to the costume drama genre. I had searched extensively on the internet about the star cast and the director but drew a blank. Earlier, I had even a doubt whether the film was actually released.

There are six songs listed for the film but names of singers and lyricists are not mentioned. Even the six songs are difficult to get on YT. I had already uploaded two rare songs from the film on YT about a year back which have been covered in the blog. With voice matching, I had provisionally identified the singer as Sitarabai Kanpuri. Like-wise, Josh Malihabadi has been accredited as lyricist on the basis that one of the two songs, “Soz-e-Gham De Ke Mujhe Us Ne Ye Irshaad Kiya“, a ghazal, already covered in the blog was published at Rekhta.org under his name.

About two months back, I had uploaded one more rare song, ‘Band Kaliyon Ko Gudgudaayegi’ from the film, on YT, with the intention of writing a short article on the song for the blog. Since I had nothing more to add in the proposed write-up than what I had earlier written on two other songs, I decided to differ the article for a future date.

Recently, I was browsing through the pages of ‘The Motion Picture Magazine’, April 1949 when I came across a short write up on ‘Shama Dulari’, then an upcoming actress, the name I heard for the first time. Like playback singer, Sitara Kanpuri, Shama Dulari had a three year exclusive contract with Shalimar Pictures of WZ Ahmed. She had played supporting roles in Shalimar’s ‘Meera Bai (1947) and ‘Rangeela Rajasthan’ (1949). For ‘Shehzaadi’ (1947), it has been mentioned in the write-up that she had ‘chief feminine role’. I do not know whether this means heroine’s role or a prominent side heroine’s role. At least, now we know that she had a role in ‘Shehzadi’ (1947). What about other actors in the film?

The only other input I got about the star cast was that Neena was in the film (probably in the role of a shehzaadi (princess)). This was as per the expectation from Shalimar Pictures but nowhere it was specifically mentioned in any source available online. Recently, I have bought a book ‘Music & Arts in Hyderabad’ (2017) written by Kamalakar Pasupuleti, a film historian. I purchased the book mainly for historical value as some of the unknown actresses and singers from silent era and also from 1930s and 40s are covered. Most importantly, one gets a historical perspective of Hyderabad as a centre of arts and diverse cultures.

But I had not expected from the book that I would get some vital information about ‘Shehzaadi’ (1947) as this was not the main scope of the book. In the ‘Memoirs’ section of the book. Kamalakar Pasupuleti has mentioned that Neena (real name: Shahida) and her mother had visited Hyderabad in connection with the shooting of ‘Shehzaadi’ (1947) and that she had a role in it which required her to take a pony ride along with a male colleague (probably hero). They had also visited his grandfather’s house.

The other information I got from the book was that Neena told them that Josh Malihabadi wrote the lyrics and probably he also wrote the story and dialogues for the film. According to Kamalakar Pasupuleti, the film remained incomplete as due to communal riots, and WZ Ahmed along with Neena’s family migrated to Pakistan. But I have a faint memory in reading somewhere in a book or magazine that the film was released in Karachi.

Coming to the song, as stated earlier, neither the name of the singer nor the name of the lyricist are known. Armed with the information as discussed in the preceding paragraph, it is now almost certain that Neena was in the film. Sitara Kanpuri always sang for Neena from the day she joined Shalimar Pictures in 1944. Additionally, in my view, the voice in the song under discussion, more or less, matches with her others songs. So, for the time being, let us credit the song to Sitara Kanpuri. Like-wise, Josh Malihabadi may be credited as lyricist for the song for the reason stated in the preceding paragraph. All the songs in the film were composed by SK Pal.

I like the way the metaphors have been used in the song for expressing joie de vivre. Incidentally, I do not remember to have come across any other Hindi film song in which words like ‘gudgudaayegi’, ‘khatkhataayegi’ have been used.
Enjoy this so very khushnuma song.

Sadanand ji,

Thanks for the article.I appreciate your allround tireless efforts to find more information from various sources about your subject. This makes the difference in yours and others’ writings.
Film Shehzadi is mentioned in HFGK as a 1947 film, which means that the film had been censored in India. It might not have been released here, but it is known that W Z Ahmed carried all his films to Pakistan. So it is likely that it was released in Pakistan, as you have also guessed.
Secondly, 6 songs are listed with record numbers and their Mukhadas. another 3 songs spaces are left blank for readers’ imagination.May be HFGK wanted to suggest that there were 3 more songs, but no info available, indicated by 3 dotted lines vertically.
Thirdly, 2 songs are credited to Josh malihabadi. One is today’s song and the other is ” Jab se bulbul toone “.
Information on Shama Dulari is new to me too. Never heard her name. Her name does appear in those two other films in the HFGK. It is mentioned as SHYAMA(शामा). Will check if she was in other films. I do remember , her name appears in some other films too.
Thanks.

Arun ji,

Thanks for some additional information about the songs.
When I was looking for the songs of this film about a year back, six songs with mukhdas were available in mp3 format on Prof. Surjit Singh’s website. As of now, 5 songs are available on YT of which 3 have already been posted in the Blog.

I also felt that there could be a few more songs in the film. After all, the hero of the film must have a couple of songs!

Yes, I have also noticed that Shama Dulari’s name appears as Shyama, for example in ‘Meera Bai’ (1947). It was mentioned that Shama Dulari had worked in ‘Baabul’ (1950). But I do not find her name in the credit titles of the film.
