Hullo to all in Atuldom

26th October is a special day in my life. It is the birthdate of two people who are very important to me personally. One was my first playmate, friend etc… my sister- a person who I cannot live with and without. I cannot live with her as she is in Mumbai but then both my sisters are in Mumbai and both are important for me forever; and it is the birthday of one of them.

The second person whose birthday it is, is a fairly new entrant in my life. He is a fan of Rafi but loves Kishore Kumar just as much. We can find him appreciating “main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya” at the same time as “Koi humdum na raha koi sahara na raha”. Is as much a fan of style icon Dev Anand as much as Rajesh Khanna. And I know for a fact that he loves old classic Indian (Bollywood) movies as much as the typical masala fair that used to be dished out in the 70s and 80s. But because he loves Rajesh Khanna does not mean he dislikes Amitabh Bachchan- he learnt to appreciate Big B towards end 70s. He is a fan of all the legends of HFM like Majrooh, Sahir, Shakeel Badayuni etc, (this is only a sample list, please ask the birthday boy for the complete list ??) and has a soft corner for Urdu poetry in film music. Hope I am not wrong in my analysis.

He is a typical Indian in the sense he loves cricket and HFM in equal measure. These days one finds him inactive or as he has said in one of his recent posts and I quote, “I go through these periods of high-frequency posting to nil-posting every now and then. A cricketing analogy for this behaviour would be the equivalent of hitting 3 sixes and then playing out 3 maiden overs. A coach would frown at this inconsistency.”

He is a spectator as far as group activities on Atuldom’s WhatsApp group is concerned but decently active on twitter. He feels many issues in India needs rectification because AFTER ALL HE IS AN INDIAN even if he spends part of the year overseas- pardes. I am sure he will like this dialogue of Raj Kapoor’s “Hindu ko ram ram, musalmman ko salaam, Christian ko good morning aur sardarji ko Sat Sri Akal! Mera joota hain japaani, yeh patloon englistaani, sarpe laal topi roosi phir bhi DIL HAI HINDUSTANI”. don’t exactly know if this is his attire in pardes but he indeed has a solah anne khara Hindustani dil.

He is one of the many “70s ke bachche” that are regular ASAD followers. I am sure all the regular followers of the blog have understood it is our dearest Rajaji’s birthday today.

Normally I am an on-the-spot writer but this time around I must have mentally written 5-6 posts and discarded a few songs that would accompany this special post. I have not written anything about his comfort level with the various software available that help trim videos etc. But that can come in some other post.

I hope he likes the song that I felt describes him truly or for that matter the majority of Indians. It is written by ex-script writer and a rather modern lyricist- Jaaved Akhtar, music is by Jatin Lalit and sung by Udit Narayan. It is from the 2000 release “Phir Bhi Dil Hindustani” and hope it is one of the songs he has heard. 🙂

So wishing the first farmaisher of the blog, a very happy birthday. May he have all the fun and joy that music has the potential to impart to listeners. Happy Birthday Rajaji.

Song-Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani(Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani)(2000) Singer-Udit Narayan, Lyrics-Jawed Akhtar, MD-Jatin Lalit

hum logon ko samajh sako toh
samjho dilbar jaani
jitna bhi tum samjhoge
utni hogi hairaani
hum logon ko samajh sako toh
samjho dilbar jaani
jitna bhi tum samjhoge
utni hogi hairaani
apni chhatri tumko de den
kabhi jo barse paani
kabhi naye packet mein
bechen tumko cheez puraani
phir bhi dil hai hindustani, (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai hindustani (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai hindustani (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani (ooooooo)

lalala lalalala
lalala lalalala

thhode anaadi hain thhode khilaadi
ruk ruk’ke chalti hai apni gaadi
thhode anaadi hain thode khilaadi
ruk ruk’ke chalti hai apni gaadi
hame pyaar chahiye
aur kuchh paise bhi
hum aise bhi hain
hum hain vaise bhi
hum logon ko samajh sako toh
samjho dilbar jaani
ulti seedhi jaisi bhi hai,
apni yahi kahaani
thhodi hum mein hoshiyaari hai,
thhodi hai nadaani
thhodi hum mein sachchaai hai,
thhodi beimaani
phir bhi dil hai hindustani,
phir bhi dil hai hindustani
phir bhi dil hai hindustani,
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani

aaaaa aaaaaa
aaaaa aaaaaaa

aankhon mein kuch aansoon hai kuch sapne hain
aansoon aur sapne donon hi apne hain
aankhon mein kuch aansoon hai kuch sapne hain
aansoon aur sapne donon hi apne hain
dil dukha hai lekin
toota toh nahin hai
ummeed ka daaman
chhoota toh nahin hai
hum logon ko samajh sako toh
samjho dilbar jaani
thhodi majboori hai
lekin thhodi hai manmaani
thodi tu tu main main hai
aur thhodi kheencha taani
hum mein kaafi baatein hai,
jo lagti hain deewaani
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai hindustani, (ooooooo)
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani (ooooooo)
dil hai hindustani,
phir bhi dil hai Hindustani
phir bhi dil hai hindustani
phir bhi dil hai hindustani

Thank you SO much for this, Peevisie’s Mom. Am really touched to read this. Am really lucky to have friends like you – this blog might have started as a repository for HFM, but over the years, it has spawned close friendships amongst some of us, co-travellers. Of course, music is still the biggest binding factor – and it should be, because it is what has brought all of us together in the first place. 🙂

You are 100% right in your assessment – Wherever I might be on this earth, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani. 🙂 Very nice, fun, song which I HAVE heard before. Heard kya, I’ve even seen the film. 🙂

Thanks once again for this wonderfully thoughtful post.
