Here is the sixth and final song from “Bandhe Haath”(1973) to appear in the blog. The song is a stage dance performance song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Picturisation shos that it is a “tribal” dance song. A “tribal” dance song in Hindi consists of skimpily dressed dancers, wearing strange outfits / masks etc that are vaguely of African or Red Indian origin.

The main female dancer is a skimpily clad Mumtaz who makes sure that the movie makers save money hiring a Helen or Padma Khanna for this dance sequence. She alongwith other similarly dressed females perform this dance in the presence of a housefull auditorium.

Whenever such performances take place in a Hindi movie, one can be rest assured that baddies would be swarming the place. This song is no exception. We find a galaxy of baddies, led by Ajit, Madan Puri etc marking their attendance. They are looking for Amitabh Bachchan, who like the baddies would invariably find himself in the vicinity of such a dance performance.

SAmitab Bachchan may be hiding in the outfit of a Sheikh, but he cannot escape from Ajit’s eagle eyes, who then passes on the intelligence to his minions as well as a policeman (Ram Mohan ?). What is the standard way in which our Hindi movie heroes try to hide from the baddies ? The join the dance performance. How an uninvited dancer can join in the performance and how the back stage organisers allow this to happen is something that we will never know. And how the hero is aware of the lyrics as well as the corrrect dance steps for the dance is also something that is a mystery to all. This supposedly disguised hero then lip syncs and dances loudly and quite prominently which is their standard attempt to hide from the baddies. :).

That is not all, we find another disguised dancer (O P Ralhan ?) joining in, no doubt easily dodging the back stage managers to the performance, and he too starts to sing and dance loudly. In his part of the song and dance, he “discreetly” passes on the information that baddies are in hot pursuit of him.

It all sounds quite silly really, but we are so used to such dance performances that we do not bat out eyelids. 🙂

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the people who are visible in the picturisation of this song.

With this song, “Bandhe Haath”(1973) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

good quality but shorter video link

audio

another female prominent dancer with blue shaded outfit is ANJANA (now she became ANJANA MUMTAZ)
AND
another male dancer is BULBUL(the blackie junior dancer)
AND
police inspector is RAM MOHAN

we can always find such lavishly picturised dance sequences in O.P.Ralhan Productions like
Phool Aur Patthar,Talash,Pyaas,Paapi,Hulchul,Bandhe Haath

another clear longer video

I think RDB himself has also sung a portion here, the first male voice going on the extra.

I was sure that this song has Pancham Da’s voice but could not find it in the longer audio version that I listened to.
However, HFGK Vol V mentions the name of R.D.Burman in the list of singers of this song. 🙂

First of all thanks for this post and song Atul ji. Many Congratulations on ‘Bandhe Haath-1973’ covering its all songs on the blog and joining to the ”list of movies – all songs covered”
When I saw the notification mail I immediately remember this song. Listening to it today after a long long time.
Thanks,
Police Inspector is Ram Mohan, sorry, but I could not noticed Madan Puri in this song.
