Hullo Atuldom
Back after a small absence where I terribly missed my favourite addiction- writing for the blog. Various reasons, primary being a minor mishap which has put my right hand in cast, and taken me away from the comfort of my desktop. But here I am, at the first available opportunity, when I got a few minutes with my computer. I have promised myself that I will write a very short post and obey the well-meaning advice of my friends of the blog and outside of the blog.
This post is to remember the female superstar of Indian Film Industry whose anniversary it is on 24th February. The star who was also a National award-winning actress, who had highly emotive eyes, a fabulous hold on comedy and a dancer of a calibre of her own, left us shocked by departing from this mortal world on this date two years ago. She made a beautiful pair with all her co actors be it Jaya Prada, Poonam Dhillon, Smita Patil and other ladies as also Kamalhasan, Rajnikanth, (who were her co-stars in her debut film as an adult)and all the actors of her times in the Indian film industry- name any hero or actor and you can have a movie of hers with him irrespective of the language. We have her in at least one movie with even Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Nasiruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt etc. It is difficult to point out who she paired successfully with or was eye-catching with.
Today’s song featuring this superstar/ actress is from an inane-typical-masala Bollywood dishoom-dishoom film that released in 1990. It was produced by MP Jain and directed by Shibu Mitra. It had a star cast which was led by Sridevi and Dharmendra along with Sonam, Chunky Pandey, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Anupam Kher, AmrishPuri, Dara Singh, Satyen Kappu as the masalas of the movie.
The music director was the flavour of those years -Bappi Lahiri and Anjaan was the lyricist. I haven’t seen “Naakabandi”(1990) and don’t intend to either but I remember two songs from the movie – one by Usha Uthup and another is by Asha Bhonsle.
Today’s song is by Asha Bhonsle. It shows Sridevi’s dancing and emoting expertise. I am sure Saroj Khan would have been the choreographer. The situation of the song seems to be an audition in front of Sadashiv Amrapurkar (hope I am right in recognising) but is a stage song. But definitely Anjaan has given an appropriate description Sridevi through the song – she was “kamaal” in all departments of acting.
As I was seeing the video of the song, I kept feeling “how sweet?” specially at the point where she mouths Gabbar Singh’s dialogues and we have Sambha (Mcmohan) and Kaalia (VijuKhote) reacting. Really pleasing choreography.
Missing you Sridevi

Lyrics
thhaam thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
thhaam thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
Rekha ko dekha tune Hema ko dekha
Nargis ko dekha tune Nutan ko dekha
zara idhar palat kar dekh
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
thhaam thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
Madhubala jaisi beauty hai meri
Asha Parekh jaisi chaal
talent Meena Kumari ka mujh mein
Zeenat ka jalwa jalaal
hai Sadhana ki wo saadgi bhi
Mumtaz waala dhamaal
Mala Waheeda ki sab khoobiyaan hain
Vyjayanthi ke sab kamaal
Rekha ko dekha tune Hema ko dekha
Nargis ko dekha tune Nutan ko dekha
zara idhar palat kar dekh
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
thhaam thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam haay
dance karna jaanoon
romance karna jaanoon
jo chahe mujhse karva lo
hero
heroine
comedian
villain ka dialogue koi bulwa lo
arre o sambha
kitne aadmi thhe
bahut naa-insaafi hai
goli chhe aur aadmi teen
ha ha ha ha ha ha
dhishum dhishum dhishum dhishum
ab tera kyahoga re kaaliya
Rekha ko dekha tune Hema ko dekha
Nargis ko dekha tune Nutan ko dekha
zara idhar palat kar dekh
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
thhaam thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam zara dil ko le thhaam
ho tragedy role ya comedy role
har role mein hoon main fit
jo bhi mujhe role dega film mein
uski film hogi hit
kar doongi ek din
chhutti main sabki
kaayam karoongi misaal
picture mein dega jo chance mujh ko
ho jaayega maalamaal
Rekha ko dekha tune Hema ko dekha
Nargis ko dekha tune Nutan ko dekha
zara idhar palat kar dekh
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
main lagti hoon
sridevi lagti hoon
thhaam thhaam
zara dil ko le thhaam
dil ko le thhaam
zara dil ko le thhaam
thaam thaam
zara dil ko le thaam
dil ko le thhaam
zara dil ko le thhaam
Peevesie’s mom ji,
You are a Brave Girl !
I like this song. It makes me feel I should sometimes listen to newer songs too. Who knows, one may surprise me !

U forget Mithun Chakraborty.
She had a great on screen chemistry with NTR, MGR, edShivaji Ganesan. I ve seen her with Prem Nazir in Malayalam. I know she had a long innings in South so Dr. Raajkumar and other Kannada and Telugu actors whose I names I don’t know- – list will be very long.
But was my excitement justified?
Just saw the song, you are 100% justified in being excited about this one. Tune is from Konkani/goan folk. It was a new song for me.
I dont know about south films, but for hindi films I am remembering more names of Sridev’s heroes, Kunal Goswami & Feroz Khan also.
I was wondering if she paired opposite Dharmendra, but just saw that she is opposite Dhamendra in this movie. So it is a record in itself, having played heroine to both father and son.
‘Chaandni” & “Nagina” being the most popular and hit films, Rishi Kapoor was the best.
It is a wonderfully lively song. Credit goes to Asha Bhonsle too for singing this song. It is a song that one begins to like the very first time one listens to it /watches it.
Our tributes to Sridevi !!!
@Peevesie’s Mom ji , thanks for the post. As discussed in the morning I was well aware of this song, since I had watched this movie during my ‘Kota days’. I like this song very much and the ‘title song’ of this movie. The movie was also a ‘nice entertainer’.
Thanks again for the post.
I was sure that this was your post when I saw the song title in the mail notification today morning 🙂
