“Naukar” (1979) was produced by Ismail Memon & Govind Ahuja, directed by Ismail Memon, music was composed by R D Burman and the songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar were the playback singers used for the five songs, three of which are on the blog.
Ankhiyon mein chhote chhote sapne sajaay ke was a song which came twice in the movie- once when Sanjeeev Kumar is singing to put his daughter to sleep and once when Jaya Bhaduri sings; i.e. there is a Lata Mangeshkar version and a Kishore Kumar version.
Pallo latke re mhaaro pallo latke is the other song.
On a recent trip to Rajasthan I heard this later song being sung by the local folk singers and R D Burman may have been inspired by them is the thought I had.
This was a long-in-the-making movie as Jaya Bhaduri had retired from acting post marriage and kids. Also the makers were said to have run into financial trouble. It was in the making since 1973 and that was the initial cause of the delay. It was finally completed five years later and turned out to be a hit and also earned Jaya Bhaduri a best actress award – must have made those distributors who thought that she was a cold proposition eat their words.Emoji
The movie was the story of a wealthy widower Amar (Sanjeev Kumar) who swaps his identity with his servant Dayal (Mehmood) when he sets out to look for a bride who will be a good mother to his daughter too. He lands up in the house of Shanti Swarup (Manmohan Krishna) and Durga Devi (Lalita Pawar) who have daughters of marriageable age -Madhu Malini and Meena T.
But the girls have other plans- one falls in love with Dayal and the other is in love with Vijay (Shailendra Singh) who happens to be Dayal’s brother.
There is one more entity in the Shanti Swarup household- Geeta (Jaya Bhaduri) who happens to be Durga Devi’s friend’s daughter who is treated as a non-entity by Durga Devi and her daughters.
Amar -‘the Naukar’ and his daughter take a liking to Geeta who also has a soft-corner for the motherless child.
So that then is the synopsis of this movie which we are revisiting today after 9 years (last post for this movie was on 04-04-2013) on the occasion of the 74th birthday of Jaya Bhaduri who married Amitabh Bachchan to become Jaya Bachchan, mother of Abhishek & Shweta Bachchan, mother-in-law to Aishwarya Rai & Nikhil Nanda and grand mother of Navya Naveli, Agastya & Aradhya.
She was born in Jabalpur to Tarun Kumar & Indira Bhaduri and made her acting debut in a Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray “Mahanagar” (1963) at the age of 15. Her Hindi film debut came in 1971 “Guddi” (this is known worldwide).
Let us wish this highly talented actress, who acted in just 32 films upto 1975 – Sholay, Mili and Chupke Chupke were her 1975 releases. She returned to films with ‘Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Ma’ in 1998. Of course, she lent her voice to the characters played by Tina Munim and Poonam Dhillon in “Yeh Vaada Raha” and played a small role in Mehmood’s “Ek Baap Aur Chhe Bete”. She came out of retirement for ‘Silsila’ in 1981.
Wishing Jaya Bhaduri health happiness and joy on her birthday.

Song-Aaya na karo gudiya mere paas (Naukar)(1979) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
dukh mera sun ke tum ho jaaogi udaas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
dukh mera sun ke tum ho jaaogi udaas
main toh woh hoon
ke duniya mein aaye hain jo
aansoon peene ke liye
mera jeena kya jeena
ke jeeti hoon main
yoonhi jeene ke liye
sapna koi na koi aas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
dukh mera sun ke tum ho jaaogi udaas
mujhko mamta ki pyaasi tumhaari nazar
kar deti hai bekaraar
maa ke aanchal ka saaya main de na sakoon
kitna chaahoon baar baar
kuchh bhi nahin hai mere paas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
aaya na karo
gudiya mere paas
dukh mera sun ke tum ho jaaogi udaas
hmm hmmm hmmm hmm hmm
hmmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm
hmmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
