Hullo Atuldom
Last year, in July, I discovered that “Ghar Ka Chiraag” as a title has been used twice in Bollywood. I have written briefly about this in this post. Then I went on to speak about the “Ghar Ka Chiraag” of the ’80s.
Today we are revisiting “Ghar Ka Chiraag” of the ’60s. Four of its songs are present on the blog.
Song | Date of post | Reamrks |
---|---|---|
Aao tumhen bataaoon ke maa kya hai | 17 september 2012 | (debut on the blog) |
Aaj rota hai kyun | 17 September 2012 | (rare song as it is filmed on Dev Kumar who normally played a baddie.) |
Ik paise ka sawaal hai mere daata | 14 September 2016 | (there is a comment to this post saying that all the big names in the cast had miniscule screen-time) |
Jaane kaise chori chori balmaa ne dekha | 22 June 2017 |
The last post from this movie was nearly five years back. The movie had six songs in all, let us take it a step closer to yyiippeeeehood. The songs of the movie were written by Kaifi Azmi and tuned by Madan Mohan. Only three singers were used:- Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi. Jagdev Bhambri was the producer- director and Hrishikesh Mukherjee was the editor. As per the comments posted (to an earlier post) Dev Kumar and Indrani Mukherjee were the lead with Dharmendra and Biswajeet making special appearances. I would like some reader who has more information about the film to enlighten us as to Waheeda Rehman, Balraj Sahni, Chand Usmani and Abhi Bhattacharya’s roles in the film.
The song from this movie, that Atulji posted, in July 2012, was a rare song as it was filmed on Dev Kumar. Dev Kumar was born Chaman Lal Kohli in 1930 who was a fan of Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand. Hope that explains why he called himself ‘Dev Kumar’ in films. (More on Dev Kumar can be found in this video of Tabassum Talkies)
Today’s song is in memory of Madan Mohan the creator of such wonders as “Dil dhoondhta phir wahi”, “koi patthar se na maare”, “meri yaad mein tum na aansoo bahana”, “tumse bichhad ke chain kahan hum payenge”, “agar mujhse mohabbat hain”, “aap ki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kaabil” and 624 other songs in 93 movies (as per the stats tab of our blog). The blog already has 560 of Madan Mohan’s compositions. Additionally. the stats tab says that three songs written by him and six sung by him are on the blog.
There are stalwarts among the blog’s followers who will tell us that Madanji’s father – Rai Bahadur Chunilal Kohli – desperately tried to keep him away from the film industry. He was schooled in Lahore, Mumbai and Dehradun. His journey in the entertainment world began with All India Radio, where he was a program assistant first at Lucknow then Delhi. He loved singing and 1947/48 saw him record a ghazal or two. He also recorded duets, with Lata Mangeshkar (who considered him to be her brother) under Ghulam Haider for the 1948 released “Shaheed”; but the songs were not used in the movie. Initially he was assistant to composers Shyam Sunder, SD Burman etc. (need confirmation on all of these from the stalwarts among the blog’s followers) He passed away on 14th July 1975 when he was only 51.
I know of at least two movies of the new millennium that paid homage to this maestro who was fond of ghazals in their own small style
(1) the Amitabh Bachchan- Akshay Kumar- Bobby Deol starrer “Ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyo” used the cross-line of one of Madanji’s popular songs from ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964)
(2) Yash Chopra’s “Veer Zaara” was a more fitting tribute to the composer (my opinion) where we can enjoy Madanji’s, hitherto, unused tunes.
I have read somewhere that he amassed an amazing record of compositions, the majority of which were either unutilized for lack of appropriate films or alternate tunes for his albums.
Our Rajaji has poured his thoughts on Madan Mohanji into this post.
Song-Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon (Ghar Ka Chiraag)(1967) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Kaifi azmi, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics (Provided by Prakashchandra)
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
mehlon se kabhi to nikalte ho
dekhe hain kabhi unke aansoo
thhukra ke jinhen tum chalte ho
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
kam se kam insaan samjho
in kismat ke maaron ko
aahen chhalni kar denge
sone ki deewaaron ko
patthar dil bhi badal daalo
kapde jaise badalte ho
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
nirdhan kaise jeete hain
ye tum kaise jaanoge
apna dil jab tootegaa
sab ka gham (?) pehchaanoge
kaanton par bhi chalo ik din
phoolon per to macahlte ho
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
jiske sapne chheene hain
usko meethhe sapne do
jiske armaan loote hain
usko armaan apne do
kuchh to karke dikhaao tum
baithhe ho aankhen malte ho
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
mehlon se kabhi to nikalte ho
dekhe hain kabhi unke aansoo
thhukra ke jinhen tum chalte ho
Ae mehlon mein rahne waalon
