Rafi Sb.

So much written about him. So much said. The words have ended. But the emotions continue to flow. So much more remains unsaid. So much more still waits. But the articulation struggles to create new epithets, define new qualifiers that may go beyond, and say a little more about this Divine Voice, about this persona so aptly described as God’s Own.

And yet, some more, little more. As it is, there are still many more songs in his voice that have to be brought on board here on our blog. I bring today a short ghazal of three couplets, that is indeed an abbreviated version. The poet who wrote these lines is Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor. As a character in history – the last Emperor of the glorious Mughal dynasty, he appears in some films. One of them is ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954).

There is a scene of the Royal Darbaar – Deewaan e Aam, in which a mushaira is being held. The Emperor himself is presiding. And being an accomplished and an acknowledged poet himself, he is also one of the presenters. Rather he is the premier presenter – his kalaam is read as the first presentation in the mushaira. The actor reading the kalaam is Sadiq. [Author’s Note: This info is provided by Ahsaan Qasim.]

Only three she’ers (couplets) of one of Bahadur Shah Zafar’s original ghazal are presented. And the voice behind this poetry is that of Rafi Sb. The video clip of this mushaira is available on YouTube. I am presenting the extracted audio of the portion that is sung by Rafi Sb. This is a short one and a half minute presentation that is neither listed in Geet Kosh and is not available on any released gramophone records of this film.

In the film ‘Mirza Ghalib’, all the listed songs except one are rendered by Talat Mehmood. The one exception is in the voice of Rafi Sb – the ghazalHai Bas Ke Har Ek Unke Ishaare Mein Nishaan Aur”.  This partial ghazal now adds one more song in this film which is rendered by Rafi Sb.

Today morning, a dear friend Amol Saraf sent me a piece of his own writing that he has written for Rafi Sb. Amol ji is US based, and a lover of Hindi film music. And yes, that is the reason that we have connected, being part of an online group that meets once a week. After we got introduced on this forum, we have had long telephone conversations, about ourselves and our intense interest in Hindi film songs.

With his indulgence, I share this piece here. All the words that he has composed for Rafi Sb, leave almost nothing more to be said at present. A wonderful eulogy that appropriately honors the great soul.

After reading the above lines, nothing more really remains to be said. The accolades continue to echo. The memories endure, the music sustains, the voice – Divine Voice, persists and prevails over all creation.

Mohmmed Rafi Sb – God’s Own.

Ameen

Song – Nahin Ishq Mein Is Ka To Ranj Hamen  (Mirza Ghalib) (1954) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Bahadur Shah Zafar, MD – Ghulam Mohammed

Lyrics

nahin ishq mein is ka to ranj hamen
ke qaraar o shaqeb zara na raha
gham e ishq to apna rafeeq raha

ho wo kaisa hi saahib e fehm o zaqaa
jise aish mein yaad e khuda na rahi
jise taish mein khauf e khuda na raha

Hindi script lyrics (Provided by Sudhir Kapur)
————————————————
