‘Ankur’ (1974), the first Hindi feature film made by Shyam Benegal gave push to the movement of new wave films (also called as the parallel cinema) in Hindi film industry. Perhaps, it was the first Hindi parallel film, that too in a rural setting, which became a commercial success. His next two films, ‘Nishant’ (1975) and ‘Manthan’ (1976) was also based in rural setting, and they were also commercially successful. Shyam Bengal had made some more such films like ‘Kondura; (1980), ‘Aarohan’ (1982), ‘Susman’ (1987) etc which were critically acclaimed. But these latter films did not receive the same reception from the film audience as his first three films.

The song being presented in this post is from the movie ‘Bambai Ki Billi-1960’.
Music for this movie was composed by Khayyam. As per the filmography of music director Khayyam Saab this was his thirteenth film as a music composer. He had already composed music for twelve movies. These included some of the well-known films like ‘Foothpath-1953’, ‘Dhobi Doctor-1954’, ‘Tatar Ka Chor-1955’, ‘Lala Rukh-1958’ and ‘Phir Subah Hogi-1958’.

(A tribute to Composer Khayyam Saab on his birth anniversary)

Today 18th February 2023 is the Ninety-sixth birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab. Had he been alive, he would have turned ninety-six years old today.
He was born on 18.02.1927 and he passed away on 19.08.2019.
As a tribute to him today I am presenting his song composition from the movie “Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995”.
