Mukesh and His Composers – 33

Singer and composer Narayan Dutt is a victim of same-name confusion where he is always mistaken for the more famous N Datta. The confusion further escalates with Datt, Dutta etc. being used for both composers. The career of Narayan Dutt has already been written by our Arunkumar ji in his posts for the songs “Dagmag Dagmag Doley Naiya” (film ‘Jogan’, 1950) and “Gupchup Un Sang Ho Gayin Akhiyaan Chaar Re” (film ‘Mordhwaj’, 1952)

Continuing with this series, I present today Mukesh collaboration with Narayan Dutt. There are only two songs sung by Mukesh for the composer and both in the film ‘Pujaarin’ (1969).

One popular song for which the composer is remembered even today is already covered on the blog – Mukesh’s seamless rendition and the flow of music in the song is soothing to the ears. Mera Prem Himalay Se Oonchaa is the song we are talking about. In spite of his own singing and the other films that he scored music for (11 Hindi and 3 Rajasthani) , it is this particular song for which the composer continues to be remembered. Such was the effect of the class of Mukesh’s voice.

For this post, I bring to the fore, the other solo, a sad song. Probably, the popularity of the aforesaid song is the reason why today’s song is not well known even though Mukesh has sung it with the same gusto and his usual pathos.

The song is written by Madan has been picturized on Vijay Dutt with glimpses of Rehana Sultana also on the screen.

Yet another gem in the voice of Mukesh, a song that is better heard than seen.

Song – Kaise Jeeyen Re Saathi  (Pujaarin)  (1969) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Madan, MD – Narayan Dutt

Lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)

kaise jiyen re ae ae
saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re
teri yaad tera gham
aur tere sapne
kab tak phiren liye hiye re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re

do naina tere neel kamal se
ab tak sapnon mein aayen
do naina tere neel kamal se
ab tak sapnon mein aayen
beete dinon ki yaad dila kar
aur mujhe wo tadpaayen
tu hi bata is toote huye dil ko
yaadon se kaise see’en re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re
teri yaad tera gham
aur tere sapne
kab tak phiren liye hiye re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re

socha tha aanchal ki chaanv mein
hans ke umar beet jaayegi
socha tha aanchal ki chaanv mein
hans ke umar beet jaayegi
tere mere pyaar ki mehakti phulwari mein
birha ki aandhi nahin aayegi
reh gayi kaanton mein ulajh ke zindagi
kab tak zehar ab pee’en re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re
teri yaad tera gham
aur tere sapne
kab tak phiren liye hiye re
kaise jiyen re saathi
tere bina kaise jiyen re

Mahesh ji

This is such a wonderful and poignant melody, heard after a very long time.
Mukesh ji’s rendition is so soulful.

Thanks for bringing attention to this song.

Sudhir ji,

Thanks for your comment.

Strangely for this film like “Saraswatichandra (1968) and quite a few others, the “happy” song is rather more remembered.

Also, what you have written in the post of the other song from the same film is quite true. It is difficult to put aside any song of Mukesh under “not so good category”.
