Blog Day :

6184 Post No. : 19100

Regulars of the blog must have noticed unusually high number of posts appearing in the blog off late. It appears as if the blog had arrived at the 19000 post mark just a few days ago. It turns out that we have left that milestone behind and we are onto the next century milestone now, viz song post number 19100 !

Blog post number 19000 was posted on 21 May 2025. Today is 23 June 2025 and we are onto blog post number 19100. This century has taken us 33 days. It is the fastest century in the blog in the last two years. During 2023, we had achieved centuries in 28 days, 31 days and 32 days. Prior to that we were taking 60 plus and 70 plus days for a century.

In the heydays of the blog that was during 2011 to 2013, such centuries were considered slow. During those days century of the blog typically took 16 days. Fastest century in the blog was achieved in 11 days when 46th century was achieved from 30 august 2011 to 9 september 2011. During this century, 12 songs were posted in one day twice ! Those were the days. 🙂

Let us came back to the present. The song post number 19100 that I have picked is from an obscure movie called “Dilli Darbaar”(1956). “Dilli Darbaar”(1956) was directed by Chandrakant for Gandhi and Choksi, Bombay. The movie had Sumitra Devi, Rehana, Veena, Prem adeeb, Sapru, S N Tripathi, babu Raje, Uma Devi, Radha Rani, Minu, Helen, kammo, R s Dubey, Radheshyam, Rajesh Sharma, Raj Sood, Raj Kaushal, Arjun singh, Neerja, Noorjahan, Sarla Kapoor, Kanta, Ulhas etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. two songs from the movie has been covered in the past.

This third from “Dilli Darbaar”(1956) is sung by Shamshad Begam. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

Only the audio of this song is available. The song is a sales pitch song.

Normally one does not associate Shailendra with sales pitch songs, but here he has come up with an intersting song. We have had sales pich songs about products such as foodstuff (peanuts, rewadi, ) women’s makeup materials (flowers, jewellery, choodee) cutlery, personal hygiene materials (daatun, manjan), idols, toys, medicines, coconut water, sweets, etc. The blog has 101 sales pitch songs so far which shows that it is quite a popular subject of songs in Hindi movies.

The sales pitch song under discussion is about itr (perfume). It could be perhaps the only song where this stuff is being peddled in a Hindi movie song.

In these sales pitch song, the sales person often announces the place he came from. Like these would be a maalaniya from Bikaner or Singapur, Banjaran from Jaipur, paan seller from Poona etc. The itr seller in this song is from Lucknow. She is making tall claims about the effect that her product has over those who use it. 🙂 There is one male voice too (uncredited) who seems to be influenced by all this sales pitch. 🙂 He too supports the salesperson’s tall claims by agreeing to the claims about the claimed qualities of itr. 🙂

The song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Lyrics are by Shailendra. S N Tripathi is the lyricist. From the lyrics, it appears that the song is picturised on a young kid or a female disguised as a male. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song. The song sounds great fun just by its audio. Watching the video of this songs could have been good fun. But sadly, the prints of this obscure movie seem to have been lost.

At least the audio of the song is available, and we are able to dig up such gems and savour them even after decades. This song is 69 years old ! It still sounds as fresh as it must have been when it started playing on radios and loud speakers during its first release in 1956.

With this song, we reach blog post number 19100. Tomorrow we will leave this milestone behind in our pursuit of future milestones.

This song, which is song post number 19100 also happens to be 400th solo song of Shamshad Begam in the blog.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all who have continued to support this musical bandwagon in one way or the other. Let us hope that this musical bandwagon keeps on moving and keeps arriving at newer destinations every day and keeps on passing milestones on a regular basis.

Song-Dekho Lucknow se baanka aaya re (Dilli Darbaar)(1956) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

Dekho lucknow se baanka aaya re
dekho lucknow se baanka aaya re

peechhe phire wo maara maara
jise lagaao wo hi tumhaara
peechhe phire wo maara maara
leke gaya thha manjnu chhela

agar kunwaara ise lagaaye

phauran hee shaadi ho jaaye
agar kunwaara ise lagaaye
phauran hee shaadi ho jaaye

apne man kee aasha paaye
apne man kee aasha paaye
jo bhee le le wo kismat waala re
jo bhee le le wo kismat waala re
ae jee le lo itar
haan le lo itar

aa jee dekho dekho dekho dekho dekho
mohabbat ke khareedar
prem ke khilaadee yaar
dekho dekho
dekh ke joohee nargis heena
dekh ke joohee nargis heena
maine sabke dil ko chheena
dekh ke joohee nargis heena
maine sabke dil ko chheena
phoolon ke rangeen paseena
le le to lut jaaye haseena
haan
haan jee le le to lut jaaye haseena
hoon musaafir nazaaqat waala re
hoon musafir nazaaqat waala re
ae jee le lo itar

dekho lucknow se
dekho lucknow se baanka aaya re
ae jee le lo itar
haan le lo itar
