Mukesh and his Actors – 07
As we draw towards the last few HF songs of Mukesh, it is becoming increasingly difficult to trace his unposted songs on the blog.
Of late, I pick up an artist (actor, co-singer, composer) and start the rigorous search on the blog to see if all the respective songs are covered. In this exercise, I am also realizing that I have myself covered the artist in one of my series in the past. 😊
Of course, I am yet to cover Raj Kapoor, Lata, Asha, and three duo-composers for whom Mukesh sang songs aplenty. The issue with such artists is that I must spend considerable time preparing the lengthy tables. However, they are quite important, and I will try to take up these marathon posts shortly. I am even contemplating breaking the songs decade-wise so that it is easy for me to cover them. Let me see what best can be done.
For today’s post, I was able to zero in on an important and prominent actor. Mukesh has given playback for only a few songs for the actor, but seeing the stature of this actor, it is significant to know the details of the collaboration. In fact, I do not have to write anything on the well-known actor as his very name and a detailed wiki page provide all the details.
The actor is none other than Vinod Khanna.
Here is his wiki page with a much-detailed description of his life, awards, work, his stint with spirituality etc.
With nothing much to add from my side, let us directly deal with his collaboration with Mukesh and here is the table with the details.
| MUKESH’s playback for VINOD KHANNA | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S. No | Name of the song | Movie (Year of release) | Co-singer (if any) | Composer | Lyricist |
| 1 | Nandlaala holi khele | Mastaana (1970) | Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Chorus | Laxmikant Pyarelal | Anand Bakshi |
| 2 | Sooraj se jo kiran ka naata | Hangaama (1971) | Lata Mangeshkar | R D Burman | Anjaan |
| 3 | Haal chaal thheek thhaak hai | Mere Apne (1971) | Kishore Kumar | Salil Chaudhary | Gulzar |
| 4 | Duniya Bhookhi Paise Ki | Sauda (1974) | Asha Bhosle | Laxmikant Pyarelal | Inderjeet Singh Tulsi |
| 5 | Haath Mein Haath Lo | Sauda (1974) | Laxmikant Pyarelal | Inderjeet Singh Tulsi | |
| 6 | Hum Ko Tumse Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar kya karen | Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) | Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Md. Rafi | Laxmikant Pyarelal | Anand Bakshi |
| 7 | Aaye re khushee ke din aaye re | Daaku Aur Jawaan (1978) | Md. Rafi, Anuradha Paudwal | Laxmikant Pyarelal | Anand Bakshi |
So, seven songs altogether and all but one are duets, triads etc. along with chorus.
1 is a Holi song involving Md. Rafi and Asha Bhosle.
2 is a duet with Lata Mangeshkar.
3 is a duet with Kishore Kumar. In this song two lead singers have given voices to 6 actors on the screen. Mukesh does sing for Vinod Khanna and hence the song qualifies to be in the list above.
4 and 5 are from Sauda (1974), which surprisingly has only one song covered on the blog so far. It’s a Lata Mangeshkar solo and can be found here.
Out of the two Mukesh songs in the film, I intend to pick up the solo as the one with Asha can be covered in my other series on co-singers.
I have written about 6 multiple times. The only song featuring 4 great singers with Lata singing for all the 3 heroines. In this song Mukesh sings for Vinod Khanna. Newcomers to the blog are requested to click on the link above to know more how, why and when this song was introduced on the blog. 😊
7 was covered by self in Nov’24. In fact, as I was going through this song a while ago, I faintly remembered watching it earlier but could not connect the context. Thereafter when Reena Roy is shown on the swing, I suddenly remembered giving a push to the swing. 😊
Now, to write on the collaboration, I can stick my neck out and say that the combo has no decisive song to be remembered or is exceptionally well-known except for 6 which also has three other great singers in it. But that is all we have of Mukesh singing for Vinod Khanna.
As is known to the blog readers, I am a very poor storyteller and hence will avoid writing on the plot of the movie. But going through the song it’s quite intriguing that Yogita Bali has this enigmatic gaze at her partner and trying to run away all the time. By the time the song ends, “haath mein haath” is sort of replaced with “hoonth mein hoonth” as they are seen sipping tea from the same part of a cup. 😊
At the fag end they settle on a boat and are seen on a jheel.
Madan Puri is having a watchful eye on the couple from “jheel ke uss paar”.
To give credit to the lyricist, the song does end with the picturization of Haath Mein Haath.

Lyrics
hmmmm
haath mein haath lo
gair ko saath lo
haath mein haath lo
gair ko saath lo
haath mein haath lo
gair ko saath lo
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye
ae mere humnavaa dard mein muskura
ae mere humnavaa dard mein muskura
dard bhee hai nasha zindagi ke liye
thhode aansoo bhee muskaan mein ghol le
gham zaroori hai dil kee khushee ke liye
gham zaroori hai dil kee khushee ke liye
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye
chalte rehna hai
rukna theherna naheen
chalte rehna hai
rukna theherna naheen
pyar karna hai duniya ko darna naheen
nain milte rahen hosh hilte(?) rahen
husn paida kare aashiqui ke liye
husn paida kare aashiqui ke liye
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye
chaand sooraj na hon
gar sitaare na hon
chaand sooraj na hon
gar sitaare na hon
phir bhee raushan zamaane ko karte chalo
leke niklo andheron mein bhee taajiya
deep jalaao sada raushnee ke liye
deep jalaao sada raushnee ke liye
haath mein haath lo
gair ko saath lo
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye
dushmanee bhee karo dostee ke liye

Mahesh ji,
Getting naughty on a rainy evening? Ho(o)nt hont mein ( normally ‘pe’ )… But, you probably misheard the hont ( hosh × ) hilte rahe in the song.
