#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————

In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Mazdoor-1983’.

While covering songs from movies released in 1983, I had mentioned that it was
an important year of my life as I had appeared and successfully passed the 10th standard Board exams that year. The other important and unforgettable event of the year was India winning the ‘World Cup of Cricket’ that year.

For Cricket fans like me that summer of 1983 turned out to be the most memorable and unforgettable as Kapil’s Devils clinched the ‘first world cup title’ for India in June’1983. Given my age that time I was more interested in cricket, movies, books, and study to pass the important examination.

If one looks at the important happenings in our country in that year – 1983 – Google has the following results. (that I mentioned in one of my earlier post here two years back).

● Waiting list for telephone connections.
● Silk Smitha.
● Khushwant Singh.
● Kapil Dev brings World Cup to India.
● Nellie Massacre tragedy.
● Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Coming to Hindi movies of that year there were many that I watched and many I didn’t. But most of the movies that year had good music in them too.

In Hindi movies it was the year of Rajesh Khanna. His movies ‘Avtaar’, ‘Souten’ and ‘Agar Tum Naa Hotey’ came in this year and they all were successful movies of this year.

This year was also an important year for Bappi Lahiri as he composed music for as many as nineteen movies (same number as R.D. Burman). There were total 130 movies released during this year. Then there was ‘Himmatwaalaa’ and Jeetendra with other ‘south producers’ movies. There were Sridevi and Jayaprada. Movies like ‘Ardh Satya’, ‘Arpan’, ‘Andhaa Qaanoon’, ‘Betaab’, ‘Hero’ (coming at the year-end), ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’, ‘Hamse Hain Zamaana’, ‘Justice Choudhary’, ‘Kalaakaar’, ‘Mandi’,’Mujhe Insaaf Chaahiye’, ‘Naukar Biwi Kaa’, ‘Painter Babu’, ‘Rang Birangi’, ‘Razia Sultan’ etc were released this year.

There were Amitabh movies like ‘Mahaan’, ‘Coolie’, and ‘Pukaar’ other than ‘Andhaa Qaanoon’. Dharmendra had ‘Qayaamat’ other than ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’. And Rajesh Khanna had ‘Nishaan’ with (Jeetendra) other than his three movies mentioned above. And not to forget the ‘English’ titled movies of Kumar Gaurav ‘Lovers’ and ‘Romance’. With all these mainstream movies (yes, I consider ‘Ardh Satya’ in this) there were movies from ‘parallel cinema’ and /or ‘offbeat movies’. Such movies included ‘Mandi’, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’, ‘Aagaman’, and ‘Kaalkaa’, ‘Kisi Se Naa Kehnaa’, ‘Sadma’, ‘Pasand Apnee Apnee’, ‘Sookhaa’, ‘Trikon Ka Chauthaa Kon’, and ‘Zaraa Si Zindagee’.

Some of the best music for that year came from Laxmikant-Pyarelal, while Bappi Lahiri and R.D. Burman also gave some of their best musical scores in the same year.

The top three songs in that year’s (1983) annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ were from ‘Souten-1983’ (1 song) and ‘Nikaah-1983’(02 songs) that took first, second and third spots in the annual list.

Some of the popular songs of that year have continued to stay with me whereas some popular songs of that year have been relegated to the ranks of forgotten songs.

The song under discussion is one such song that I got to listen to again after many years when I was looking for the remaining songs of this movie.

This song is from the social movie ‘Mazdoor-1983’. It was directed by Ravi Chopra for his home productions ‘B.R. Films, Bombay’. B.R. Chopra was the producer of this movie. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 06.10.1983. The cast of this movie has Dilip Kumar, Nanda, Raj Babbar, Padmini Kolhapure, Rati Agnihotri, Raj Kiran, Suresh Oberoi, Madan Puri, Johny Walker, Yunus Parvez, Iftekhar, Nazeer Hussain, Amar, Jagdish Raj, Sunil Dhawan, R.S. Chopra, Rajesh Puri, Arun Bakshi, Dinesh Anand, Hasan Kamal and others. This movie has seven songs written by Hasan Kamal and one song is jointly credited to Hasan Kamal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. None of the songs from this movie ‘Mazdoor-1983’ make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1983’.Two songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog.

Today I am presenting the third song from this movie which is sung by Salma Agha. This song is picturised on Padmini Kolhapure and Raj Babbar on beautiful outdoor locations. Lyrics are by Hasan Kamaal and music is composed by R.D. Burman.

I have not watched this movie so I am not aware about its story and the context of this song in the movie. However from watching the video we can guess that Rati Agnihotri seems to be the first love or past love of Raj Babbar in the movie and Padmini Kolhapure is who he ends up got married to. 🙂

This song is a nice composition of Pancham Da that grows upon the listeners as one listens to this song a few times.

chhoote chaahe saaree khudaayee
ho o o o o
pehlaa pehlaa pyaar

bhoolen chaahe saaree khudaayee ee
mujhe milaa saath jo teraa aa aa
maine saaree duniyaa bhulaayee

Good Morning,

Good song by Salama.

Strange Salm sang only few songs for Hindi films, though her Nasal voce is good and mellifluous.

Thanks for sharing.

Blessings,

Uma🙏
