Hullo Atuldom

Presenting a song from the May 1980 released “Choron Ki Baraat” which was directed by Harmesh Malhotra and produced by A. K. Nadiadwala and Salim Akhtar (who later produced films like ‘Aapas Ki Baat’, ‘Qayamat’, ‘Balidaan’, ‘Loha’, ‘Batwara’, ‘Doodh Ka Karz’, ‘Izzat’, ‘Police Officer’ etc. Salim Akhtar had introduced Amjad Khan’s son Shahab and Rani Mukherjee in ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat’.)

“Choron Ki Baraat” had Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Danny, Jagdeep, Jeevan, Prema Narayan, Ranjeet, Ajit, Heena Kausar, Ram Mohan, Sudhir, Roopesh Kumar, Dev Kumar, B.M.Vyas, Shobha Khote, Azad, Janki Das, Hercules, Jaswant, Mulchand,etc. in the cast. The films songs were composed by Laxmi – Pyare and written by Anand Bakshi. The songs were in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Jaspal Singh, Anwar and Manna Dey.

One song is there on the blog:

The plot of ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ was loosely based on the 1973 release ‘Gaddaar’ which was also produced & directed by Harmesh Malhotra. That is, in ‘Gaddaar’ it was Ajit whose money is stolen by a gang of thieves; in ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ Ajit is the main thief.

Ajit (Dhanraj) is the father of Neetu Singh (Anju) who lives on an isolated private island. She develops a close relationship with Shatrughan Sinha (Shekhar) after the two meet and fall in love. Hoping to see them married, Dhanraj invites Shekhar to join him on the island and offers Shekhar to work for him. But before that can happen, six men men who had been duped by Dhanraj several years ago, arrive on the island incognito, enlist the assistance of the island’s native people, led by Danny (Heera), who have been oppressed by Dhanraj and Ranjeet (Captain Ashok), to recover their loot and kill Dhanraj and Anju. It is then, Anju finds out that the reason Shekhar accompanied her was not because he loves her, but for quite some other unknown and devious reason.

Today’s song is in the voice of Manna Dey, Anwar & Shailendra Singh.

Manna Dey who was born Prabodh Chandra Dey on 1st May, 1919. He was an Indian playback singer, music director and musician. With a strong foundation in classical music, he is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and celebrated vocalists in the Indian film industry. He is also credited with bringing Indian classical music into mainstream Hindi cinema.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Manna Da recorded about 3,500 songs. While most were in Bengali and Hindi, he also sang in 14 other Indian languages, including Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Chhattisgarhi.

For his contribution to Indian music, Manna Da received numerous honours. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007. He was awarded the best playback singer award in 1972 for the film ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Plus he was recipient of awards by many state governments. 24th October is his death anniversary, he passed away in Bangalore on this date at the age of 94.

The song ‘Gulshan Gulshan Basti Basti’ has Jeevan, Sudhir, Ram Mohan and a fourth actor (whom I am unable to recognize). It will be interesting to note that the three antaras of the song are in the voices of three different singers & all actors lip-sync to the same singer. Roopesh Kumar is also seen in the song, but he doesn’t lip-sync.

With this song we also remember Omkar Nath Dhar who was famous as JEEVAN in films. He was born on 24th October 1915, in Srinagar into an aristocratic Hindu Kashmiri Pandit family. His father, a nobleman, served as the governor of the Gilgit Agency as its Wazir-e-Wazarat (Minister of the Ministers, i.e. Chief Minister) in the princely state of Kashmir. He lost both his parents by the time he was three years old.
Jeevan ran away from home at the age of 18 and came to Bombay with only Rs. 26 in his pocket. After a brief period of struggle, he eventually landed himself a job in the studios of Mohan Sinha (Vidya Sinha’s grandfather). His job was to stick silver paper on the reflectors. It was here while working as a reflector boy that he landed a lead role in the movie ‘Fashionable India’, which was being made by Mohan Sinha.
It is said that Jeevan has played Narad Muni in more than 60 films and theater shows of different languages. His most famous film as Narad Muni was the 1950 hit film ‘Har Har Mahadev’ with Trilok Kapoor and Nirupa Roy. He became notable otherwise for his roles in ‘Romantic India’ in 1935,’ Afsaana’ in 1946 and ‘Station Master’ in 1942. He appeared in several Dev Anand films from 1946 to 1978 and in Manmohan Desai movies such as ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (his character of ROBERT is my first memory of Jeevan) and ‘Dharam Veer’ as villain. He also starred in the Punjabi film ‘Teri Meri Ek Jindri’. His last movie was ‘Insaaf Ki Manzil’, released in 1986, produced by Ram Nandan Prasad and Directed by Braj Bhushan. He died on 10 June 1987 at the age of 71.

{Most of what I have written about the actor has already been mentioned on the blog by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji (our in-house encyclopedia)}
Remembering the singer who sang 1344 songs (as per the STATS tab of our blog) with a song, where we have actors not known to sing songs onscreen (at least I hadn’t seen them sing songs on screen as they were all past their prime when I got to consciously viewing films.)
