‘Daaman Aur Aag’ (1973) was produced by J R Gupta-Rajhans and was directed by Vinod Kumar. The cast included Saira Bano, Sanjay Khan, Balraj Sahni, Rajendra Nath, Madan Puri, K N Singh, Anwar Hussain, Mukri, Sundar, Sanjana, Zeb Rahman, Chand Usmani, Lolita Chatterjee, Praveen Paul, Sadhana Khote, Shetty, Bhushan Tiwari etc.
In this film, Sanjana performed the role of Saira Banu’s friend. Both are dancers in the film as a front but they are involved in smugglings for Madan Puri. Sanjana (real name: Rehana Khan) debuted in Hindi films in ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1969) in a leading role with Dara Singh. She has been paired with Dara Singh also in ‘Beqasoor’ (1969), ‘Apna Khoon Apna Dushman’ (1969), ‘Gunaahon Ke Raaste’ (1970) and ‘Ilzaam’ (1970). Thereafter, she was mostly seen in supporting roles. She has worked in about 60 films during 1969 to 1983.
The life story of Sanjana is very pathetic. She got married at an early age with a son and daughter. However, her husband deserted her and his whereabouts was not known. Her son was born spastic for which she required money. So, she started her career in Hindi films. Her active filmy career enabled her to buy her own flat and a car. She got her daughter married. Unfortunately, her son-in-law developed kidney complications for which she had to take care of him and the daughter. Her financial conditions became precarious due to constant medical expenses. Added to her problem was that she herself was diagnosed with liver cancer. She had to sell her flat and car to raise finance for the medical treatments. Sometime in 2012, she made an appeal on TV for the financial help for treating her liver cancer. Thereafter, there is no news about her. [ Based on TV programme, ‘Tabassum Talkies’].
‘Daaman Aur Aag’ (1973) is a family drama which revolves around a honest man who loses his wife upon the birth of his son. He wants to bring up his son with a good life. However, his poor financial condition does not afford him to do so. The financial pressure forces him to join an illicit business through which he earns enough money to send his son abroad for higher education. After completion of his education, the son returns to India and joins the police. His son falls in love with a girl who is associated with illicit business which he is not aware. Soon he comes to know that his father with two associates are carrying the illicit liquor business. Now, the son is torn between his duty as a law enforcer and his father to whom he has a high regards. The story in some details is given below:
Shankar (Balraj Sahni), a honest man lives with his wife (Chand Usmani). He runs a small hotel owned by Surajmal (Madan Puri) for a living. After many years, his wife is pregnant for the first time. However, she dies after delivering a baby boy. He takes care of his son as a single father which affects his hotel business. Surajmal, the owner of the hotel is not happy with declining business of the hotel, He suggests him to serve liquor in his hotel so that more customers will come to the hotel. In a fits of rage, Shankar gives up running the hotel.
Shankar has admitted his son in a good school and his expenses have gone up. His son has been removed from the school for not paying the fees. There is not much in the house to even feed his son. These circumstances force Shankar to deviate from his honest path for the sake of his son to whom he wants to give a better quality life. After a lot of inner conflicts, Shankar decides to sell his honest life for money and he joins Surajmal’s illicit liquor business with Pinto (Anwar Hussain) and Abdul (Mukri) assisting him. Soon, he has enough money to send Raja abroad for higher education while shifting his home to a palatial bungalow.
The film’s story takes 10 years’ leap forward. Raja (Sanjay Khan) is in a flight to return to India after completing his higher education. In the flight, he accidentally meets Reeta (Saira Banu) with a bandaged leg. He helps her in the flight which impresses Reeta. Raja is not aware of Reeta’s antecedents who is actually smuggling diamonds in the guise of her bandaged leg and is working for Surajmal. With the news of the arrival of Raja, Shankar is happy as well as worried because what will be Raja’s reaction when he comes to know of his father’s illicit business.
Raja and Reeta regularly meets and over a period of time, both fall in love with each other. But Reeta is worried about her antecedents. In the meanwhile, on the advice of Singh (K N Singh) who is a police commissioner, Raja joins the police forces as Police Inspector. His reason for joining the police is that he has been reading in the newspapers few deaths because of drinking illicit liquor and he is bent upon smashing the business of illicit liquor. However, his joining the police force is not liked by his father Shankar as well as his fiancée, Reeta, for obvious reasons but outwardly, both give him their good wishes.
Shankar tells Surajmal that his son Raja has joined the police force. So, from now onwards he would not be associated with his illicit liquor business. Surajmal warns him that he should pressurise Raja to leave the police inspector’s job. Otherwise, Raja would be killed. Raja on the other hand, acting on a tip off, has gone incognito to Surajmal’s liquor den and finds that it is a big camouflaged set-up.
One day Raja takes Reeta to his house to introduce her to his father as his fiancée to whom he proposes to marry. Both Shankar and Reeta are shocked to see each other. Reeta and Shankar had seen each other as associate of Surajmal. Shankar meet Reeta privately and tells her that he will not allow Raja to marry her. She also tells Shankar that Raja has always treated him like a God and he does not know that his father is also a part of the illicit liquor business. Reeta decides to move away from Raja who is not aware of her whereabouts.
On a tip off, Raja with the police forces raids a liquor making den and is shocked to see his father there. Raja is torn between his duties as police inspector and his father to whom till now regarded him as next to God. He resigns from police and as a punishment to his father, he starts drinking illicit liquor. Shankar presumes that Raja is drinking because he has rejected his marriage with Reeta. He searches for Reeta and meets her to convince Raja to stop drinking as he has no objection to his marrying her. Reeta meets Raja and comes to know that Raja has been drinking after knowing that his faher is associated with the illicit liquor business.
To stop Raja from drinking, Shankar surrenders to the police upon which he is arrested. After knowing the background, police commissioner, Singh suggests Reeta to turn approver so that Surajmal and his associates are punished she gets a reprieve. He also rejects the resignation of Raja as police inspector. The films ends with Raja and Reeta meeting Shankar in prison who gives his blessing to both of them.
The film had five songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘thhirka badan to geeton ke dhaare machal pade’ which is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle who sing for Saira Banu and Sanjana, respectively. It is a semi-classical dance song.
The context of the song is that Surajmal (Madan Puri) tells Bhushan Tiwari that from now onwards, Reeta ( Saira Banu) will be performing her dance everyday on the stage below which his den will manufacture illicit liquor. Police will not have any doubt. This followed by dance performance by Reeta and Meena (Sanjana) and watched by Raja (Sanjay Khan) among others.
The record version of the song does not have the last stanza of the video clip but instead it has a different stanza which is not there in video clip.
