“Bada Kabootar”(1973) was produced and directed by Deven Verma for Navratna Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Ashok Kumar, Rehana Sultan, Nikhilesh, Deven Verma, Keshto Mukherji, Subroto, Ashoo, Pinchoo Kapoor, Leela Mishra, Paul Sharma, Jal Parvez, Helen etc in it. The movie also had lots of “new discoveries” viz Saajan, Kailash Sharma, Sameena, Master Ashwin and Master Ramesh in it.

Story of this movie, as narrated in wikipedia, goes like this:-

Mama Rampuri (Ashok Kumar) comes from a long line of criminals and is contemplating his latest scheme. He plans to enlist the services of his nephew Bhola (Deven Verma). Bhola however has had quite a few bad experiences with Mama and has been in and out of prison seven times trying to carry out Mama’s mostly disastrous robbery plans.

However, his mother (Leela Mishra), does not listen to his pleas of wanting to live an honest life selling bananas or banyans and tries to inspire him by narrating the glorious deeds of his late father (her husband) who went to the prison no less than seventeen times and yet never complained. She pretends to have a heart disease and gets herself admitted in a hospital. Poor Bhola is wrongly convinced that a large amount of money is needed for her treatment.

Bhola reluctantly joins hands with Mama who recruits club dancer Rita alongside his trustworthy gang members Abdul and others to plan the heist of kidnapping the only son of millionaire businessman cum antisocial smuggler Seth Dharamdas. There is also Mama’s old nemesis Ghaffoor who tries to thwart his plans and harm him at all stages.

The synopsis in IMDB and youtube(One of them has faitfully copied the content of other) is:-

In order to extract a huge sum of money from underworld don, Dharamdas, Mama Rampuri and his nephew, Bhola and others kidnap Dharamdas’ child, not knowing that Dharamdas’ love for money is far greater than his love for his child, and that Dharamdas himself is quite capable of kidnappings and murder himself.

From the above story, it is clear that calling this movie a “social” movie is incorrect. It is a crime movie.

“Bada Kabootar”(1973) had five songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the blog.

Here are the details of the four songs that have been covered so far:-

Blog post No Song Date of post Singer(s) Lyricist Remarks
14308 Bada kabootar ud jaayegaa 28 April 2018 Bhupinder Singh Majrooh Sultanpuri
17521 Ye dil mera haaye re haaye re 5 March 2023 Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle Yogesh Picturised on Nikhilesh and Rehana Sultan
19049 Mubaarak ho ye raat jawaan 10 June 2025 Asha Bhonsle Yogesh Picturised on Helen
19757 Raaz kee ik baat hai 26 December 2025 Asha Bhonsle Yogesh Picturised on Rehana Sultana

Here is the fifth and final song from “Bada Kabootar”(1973) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Yogesh is the lyricist and music is composed by R D Burman.

The song is picturised on Rehana Sultana and Nikhilesh who are seen trying to pacify a baby and put him to sleep, but showing great impatience with the baby, unlike most lullaby songs in Hindi movies. That is because they are not the parents of the baby rather they have kidnapped the baby who is the son of Seth Dharamdas (Pinchoo Kapoor). By the way, the above wikipedia and IMDB/Youtube story of the movie is silent about the hero Nikhilesh. IMDB just tells us that he plays Navin.

Video of the movie is avilable on youtube but I do not have the time or patience to watch the movie. I am mainly interested in its songs and how they are picturised. I already have those details with me without needing to watch the movie.

Here is this fifth and final song from “Bada Kabootar”(1973) to appear in the blog. Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

With this song, all the five songs of “Bada Kabootar”(1973) have been covered in the blog. This movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
