‘Khoon Ka Badla Khoon’ (1978) was produced by Ratan Mohan and was directed by Kalpataru (K Parvez). The cast included Vinod Khanna, Mahendra Sandhu, Asha Sachdev, Ajit, Sudhir, Bindu, Iftekhar, P Jairaj, Jayshri T, Padma Khanna, Purnima, Imtiaz Khan, Viju Khote, Rajan Haksar, Mohan Choti, Shetty etc. The film was started in 1974 under the title, ‘Saboot’. The story of the film was in line with most of the films of the 1970s under action genre. The theme of such films was to emphasis on the law enforcement agencies against the organised crimes of the underworld in which personal revenge was also a key factor against the organised crime.

Unfortunately, the VCDs of the film available on video sharing platforms are patchy with the duration of less than two hours. All the eight songs in the film have been excluded in the VCDs. What has remained in the VCD is predominance of action scenes. I have attempted to collate the story of the film based on the available scenes which is as under:

Amar (Vinod Khanna) and Ajay (Mahendra Sandhu) are the sons of Mr. Kotwal (Iftekhar) and Mrs. Kotwal (Purnima). During their childhood, Ajay gets separated from the family, probably abducted by a criminal gang. Mr. Kotwal is presently the Police Commissioner and Amar, a CBI police officer.

There is an organised crime syndicate run by Al Fanzo (Ajit) with his No.1 (Sudhir) as his main operator. The crime syndicate is known as ‘Trishul Gang’. Al Fanzo disguises himself as Dulhe Nawab and is friendly with Police Commissioner, Kotwal who is not aware of his real identity. Under Al Fanzo, a subsidiary crime syndicate is operated by Ranjit (Imtiaz Khan). Bindu (Bindu) and Julie (Padma Khanna) are associates of the criminal gangs while Jayshree T (Munnibai) as a courtesan act as a conduit for gang leaders.

Police Commissioner and his son, Amar, have been pursuing the criminals to get hold of Al Fanzo but they have not been successful. It is at this juncture Police Commissioner directs Amar to join the criminal syndicate of Al Fanzo as a mole. To join the criminal syndicate, Amar deliberately foils the attempt of the police raid on criminals because of which police arrests him for delinquency of his duty but earns the confidence of Al Fanzo. So, he wants Amar to join his crime syndicate. One day, when Amar is being shifted to the prison, Al Fanzo’s gang abducts Amar and take him to Al Fanzo who becomes one of his associates, called ‘No.2’.

Police Commissioner’s other son, Ajay, after he got separated from the family, has started his own small gang whose main aim is to siphoned off the looted money of Al Fanzo gang and donates that money for the betterment of his village. In a way, both Amar and Ajay have been pursuing Al Fanzo gang independently for different reasons. In their pursuits, one more person, Asha (Asha Sachdev) is also after the criminal gang independently who works as an undercover for another agency. In short, Amar, Ajay and Asha have the common pursuit to dismantle the criminal syndicate run by Al Fanzo but without being aware of each other’s activities.

In the meanwhile, Al Fanzo is after a micro-film which contains the secret information on a scientific discovery by which any solid things gets instantly converted into liquid. For Al Fanzo, it is a great discovery for bank robbery and for looting any type of valuable kept in safes and lockers. This information is also known to the police as well as to Ajay. So, the men from Al Fanzo, Bindu, Ajay and Police commissioner are waiting at the airport to arrest the career of the micro-film. As soon as he arrives at the airport, police arrests him. Before that he has swallowed the capsule of the micro film. While he is being taken at the police station, Al Fanzo’s men kills him. He dead body is kept in the morgue. During the post mortem, the swallowed micro film is recovered but Bindu gets hold of it and is on her way to give it to Dulhe Nawab. Before that Ajay confronts her. Seeing the danger, Al Fanzo/Dulhe Nawab kills Bindu. At the time of the inquest of Bindu, the police commissioner takes charge of the micro-film.

Al Fanzo has now reason to believe that after the death of Bindu, his disguise of Dulhe Nawab has now been exposed to the Police Commissioner. He orders Amar to assassinate the Police Commissioner. Ajay and Asha are independently at the same place when they become aware of the plot to kill the police commissioner. Amar being the mole in Al Fanzo’s criminal syndicate stages a fake encounter of the Police Commissioner. But very next day, Police Commissioner visits Dulhe Nawab’s house who is shocked to see him alive. He calls No.1 to eliminate Amar for his treachery.

At the end, Al Fanzo has kept Police Commissioner under house arrest when he visits Dulhe Nawab’s bungalow for tacitly taking his finger print. A chance meeting of Ajay with Police commissioner’s wife becomes a revelation to him that he is her son and Amar is his elder brother. A phone call from Dulhe Nawab requesting her to visit his bungalow where her husband is already present for a get-together sends an alarm bell to Ajay. He reveals her that Dulhe Nawab is none other than Al Fanzo the leader of the Trishul gang.

Asha, who is now known to Ajay as an undercover agent of an investigative agency, joins with Ajay who also now knows that he is the second son of the Police commissioner. Both Ajay and Asha join the get-together arrange by Dulhe Nawab in the guise of the dancers. After their dance performances, their real identity get revealed by No.1. Both are also put along with the police commissioner and his wife under chains. After getting the micro-film from the pocket of the police commissioner, Al Fanzo orders No,1 to shoot all the fours from his revolver. At that time, No.1 reveals himself as undercover CBI Officer who has joined his gang as a mole after putting a plastic mask and being given the name ‘No.1’. By that time, Amar with the police forces surround Al Fanzo’s bungalow. A fight ensues between Amar, Ajay and Asha on the one hand against Al Fanzo’s gang in which Al Fanzo gets arrested by police. The Police Commissioner and his family get united.

In this film, Ajit, in a villain’s role of Al Fanzo has a major presence followed by Vinod Khanna as Amar and Mahendra Sandhu as Ajay. The lead actress, Asha Sachdev’s scenes with Ajay and Amar is only towards the end of the of the film. In other time, she has scenes with a few supporting actors

The film had eight songs written by S H Bihari (7) and Ram Bhardwaj (1) which were set to music by O P Nayyar. All eight songs feature Vani Jayraman as playback singer with four of her being solo songs. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the third song, ‘ae jee hogaa kyaa aage janaab dekhnaa’, a duet rendered by Vani Jairam and Mohammed Rafi who sings for Asha Sachdev and Mahendra Sandhu respectively.

This was O P Nayyar’s first film released after ‘Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye’ (1973) which was Asha Bhosle’s last association with the music director. In this film, Vani Jairam has rendered (or perhaps told to render) the songs to sound like close to Asha Bhosle style. This song under discussion is no exception.

In the absence of all the songs in the VCD of the film, it is not possible to give the exact context of the song under discussion. But from the dance costumes of Asha Sachdev and Mahindra Sandhu, I get an indication that after the end of the song, No.1 (Sudhir) of Al Fanzo gang had planned to mix poison in the drinks to be served to Al Fanzo during a dance programme in his bungalow so that after his death, he will become the chief of the Criminal Syndicate. At the same venue, Ajay and Asha have come, disguised as dancers, to trap Al Fanzo who has kidnapped Police Commissioner (Iftikhar) and his wife (Purnima) for getting the micro-film containing a secret formula.
