My Tribute To The Legendary Playback Singer -Suman Kalyanpur
One of the last living legends, Smt. Suman Kalyanpur is no more. I will write a few words and then post this song as a tribute to the legend.
In the golden era of Hindi film music, there were voices that entertained, voices that captivated, and voices that touched the soul. Among the most exquisite of these was the voice of Suman Kalyanpur— a singer whose artistry, grace, and humility earned her a special place in the hearts of music lovers.
Blessed with a voice of remarkable sweetness and purity, Suman Kalyanpur brought elegance to every song she sang. Her singing was marked by flawless diction, impeccable sur and an emotional restraint that allowed the melody and lyrics to shine. Whether rendering a romantic duet, a devotional bhajan, a lullaby, or a poignant melody of longing, she infused each composition with sincerity and refinement.
During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, she worked with many of the finest composers and lyricists of Indian cinema. Her duets with Mohd. Rafi Saab remain among the treasures of Hindi film music. Songs such as “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche,” “Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe,” and countless others continue to enchant listeners decades after their creation.
What made Suman Kalyanpur unique was her ability to convey deep emotion without theatricality. There was a natural gentleness in her voice that gave her songs an enduring freshness. Even when singing complex compositions, she maintained an effortless simplicity that drew listeners into the world of the song.
Despite her immense talent and popularity, she remained known for her modesty and quiet dignity. She never sought the limelight, allowing her work to speak for itself. As a result, her legacy rests not on publicity or spectacle, but on the timeless beauty of her music.
For countless admirers, listening to Suman Kalyanpur is like revisiting an era when melody reigned supreme and songs were crafted with extraordinary care. Her voice continues to evoke memories, stir emotions, and remind us of the rich heritage of Indian film music.
Today, we salute Suman Kalyanpur – not only as a gifted singer, but as a custodian of musical elegance. Her songs remain woven into the cultural fabric of India, and her voice continues to resonate across generations.
Thank you, Sumanji, for the melodies, the memories, and the magic. Your voice remains eternal, a gentle stream of music flowing through the hearts of listeners everywhere.
As a humble tribute I am presenting a song sung by her.
“Maine Tere Liye Teri Zid Ke Liye” a superb song from the 1972 flick “Munimji”. The song was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Usha Khanna.
The song is lip synced and performed by Yogita Bali with Anil Dhawan also present in the picturisation.
