‘Pyaar Deewaana’ (1972) was produced and directed by Samar Chatterjee who also wrote and acted in the film. The cast included Kishore Kumar, Mumtaz, Padma Khanna, Iftekhar, S Banerjee, Shefali, Samson, Moni Chatterjee, S K Sham, Rajnibala, Satish Arora, Sunder etc. The film is a light hearted family drama.
The film was in the making for a long time and the songs were recorded sometime in mid-1960s. The shooting of the film started with the title, ‘Mr Buddhu’ which was subsequently changed to ‘Zindagee Phir Muskaayee’. It was only at the time of the release, the title was changed to ‘Pyaar Deewaana.(Source: ’Kishore Kumar-The Ultimate Biography’ by Anirudh Bhattacharjee and Parthiv Dhar, 2022).
Incidentally, films like ‘Akalmand’ (1966), ‘Ladka Ladki’ (1966), ‘Albela Mastaana’ (1967) and Shrimanjee’ (1968) in which Kishore Kumar was in the lead roles did not fare well on the box office. It is said that Kishore Kumar had lost interest in his acting career and was evaluating himself to concentrate more on playback singing career. Furthermore, during the making of this film, he was also affected by the health issue of Madhubala.
This was the only film Samar Chatterjee produced and his second and the last film as a director. Samar Chatterjee (24/09/1942 – 07/10/1997) joined as child actor in Bombay Talkies ‘Mashaal’ (1950). He mainly worked in the films made by Bimal Roy like ‘Maa’ (1952), ‘Parineeta’ (1953), ‘Do Beegha Zameen’ (1953), ‘Naukari’ (1954), ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961), ‘Bandini’ (1963) and in some films of other Bengali directors like Gyan Mukherjee, Subodh Mukherjee, Nitin Bose, Satyen Bose, Shakti Samanta, Basu Bhattacharya, Arabind Sen and Basu Chatterjee. His directorial debut was ‘Ram Bhakta Vibhishan’ (1958). After producing and directing the film under discussion, Samar Chatterjee seems to have shifted to work in Bengali films with ‘Ashlilatar Daye’ (1983) being his last film as a supporting actor.
The story of the film is as under:
Sunil (Kishore Kumar) has been brought up by his wealthy uncle, Rai Bahadur (S Bannerjee) after the death of his father. In the college, he does everything except studying. He plays prank and flirts with girls. The college administration and the affected girls’ parents have lodged complaints with Sunil’s uncle who is shocked. He consults his friends as to how to bring Sunil to the right track who is the only heir to his business and wealth. One of his friends, Shekhar (Iftekhar) suggests to Rai Bahadur to get Sunil married so that his wife will keep him in control. After some initial hesitation, Rai Bahadur agrees with the suggestion. But the problem is how to make Sunil agree to get married to a girl selected by his uncle?
Rai Bahadur has left for Palampur for some business from where he sends a telegram of his illness. Sunil rushes to Palampur to see his uncle where he finds in the company of his friends. He reveals to Sunil his marriage plan for him. Sunil outrightly rejects the marriage and wants to go back. However, with the help of his friends, Sunil is forcibly married to a girl in a veil as recommended by Shekhar. On the wedding night, Sunil escapes from his room. Rai Bahadur puts onus on Shekhar to find a solution because he is the person who had suggested for Sunil’s marriage.
Sunil returns to his home in the city. In the college, he starts flirting with a new college student, Mamta (Mumtaz). Initially, she gets annoyed with Sunil for his pranks and she even slaps him. As it often happens in many ‘B’ grade Hindi films, one day Sunil fights alone with half-a-dozen goons to save Mamta from them. Now, Mamta’s anger turns into an admiration for Sunil. Both falls in love with each other with a couple of songs picturised on them. Mamta shares her new-found love with her roommate, Rekha (Padma Khanna) who is doing her internship under Mamta’s doctor-brother.
Sunil and Mamta want to get married and Mamta’s doctor-brother has already given his approval. But Sunil is bit hesitant as he not sure as to how his uncle will react to his proposed marriage with Mamta. In any case, Sunil has invited Mamta to visit his house so that he can discussed their marriage with his uncle. There is a surprise waiting for Sunil in his home when he finds the girl in veil he had got married with earlier and her father have been waiting for him. While the father has left after leaving his daughter, Sunil is worried that he would be exposed when Mamta visits his house. So, he locks up the girl in veil in another room thus avoids being exposed for the time being.
Some misunderstanding develops between Rekha and Mamta as she finds Sunil and Rekha in an intimate conversations. Mamta confronts Rekha who leaves the house in disgust because there was nothing between Sunil and her. Sunil takes Rekha to his house to cool her down. Mamta overhears the conversations from Shekhar that Sunil was already married, which Sunil always felt as a sham marriage without his consent. On top of it, Rekha has been reported missing. Since Mamta has last seen Rekha with Sunil, a doubt creeps in her mind about the involvement of Sunil in her disappearance. In short, Mamta has completely lost faith in Sunil.
With police after Sunil for the disappearance of Rekha and Mamta refusing to see him, Sunil tries to commit suicide by jumping in the sea. However, he is saved by a fisherman and is brought home. At that time, Shekhar comes with a veiled women whom Sunil had got married in a sham marriage. Rai Bahadur says that Sunil has to accept the girl he has married. But Sunil is forthright that he cannot accept her because he loved only one, and that is Mamta. After hearing this, Rai Bahadur removes the veil from the face and tells Sunil at least to see her face before rejecting her. To the pleasant surprise of Sunil, the veiled girl to whom Sunil married was none other than Mamta. It was the ploy played by Shekhar to bring them together as per his assurance to Rai Sahab when Sunil had escaped on his wedding night. Sunil and Mamta unite and Rai Bahadur is a most happy man.
The film had seven songs (including a double version song) written by Asad Bhopali which were set to music by Lala Sattar. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘ye zindagee bhee kyaa hai’ which is a double solo version song rendered by Asha Bhosle, separately for Padma Khanna and Mumtaz with different antara lyrics.
Rekha (Padma Khanna) and Mamta (Mumtaz) are best friends and they share the room. However, towards the last about 30 minutes, some misunderstanding creep in the mind of Mamta that she has weened away Sunil (Kishore Kumar) from her when Sunil and Mamta were in verge of getting married. Showing her disgust for misunderstanding, Rekha leaves Mamta’s shared room. Feeling sad about the whole situation, Rekha sings the song. After a few scenes, Mamta also sings the same song after she comes to know that Sunil was already married and now he is involved in the disappearance of Rekha for which the police is after him.

1. Picturised on Padma Khanna
