“Shrimaanji”(1968) was produced and directed by Ram Dayal for Mukul Enterprises, Bombay. The movie had Kishore Kumar, I S Johar, Jeevan, Asha Nadkarni, Meena Rai, Shahida, Asit Sen, Wasti, Murad, Ram Kamlani, Hiralal, Neelam, W M Khan, Veena, Madhumati, Sharifa etc in it.

The movie was a comedy movie for bulk of its run time, but in the initial reels the movie was a meldrama, whereas the last few reels were murder cum courtroom drama.

Mr Sadanand Kamath, who covered the previous song of this movie in the blog, gave a very detailed story of the movie in that writeup. Here is that story again:-

The story start in the year is 1942. Advocate M.L. Gupta (Wasti) lives with his wife Maya (Veena) in a palatial house in South Bombay (Mumbai). One day, Gupta travels to Calcutta (Kolkata) to represent one of his clients in the court. However, during an air raid by Japanese aircrafts, Gupta runs to take shelter when he finds himself in the house of a prostitute, Panna (Asha Nadkarni) who seduces him, forcing him to spend the night in her house.

After finishing his work in Kolkata, Gupta returns home and forgets about his one-night stand in Kolkata. After few months, Maya gives birth to a male child, Johar. Four years have passed after the birth of Johar. In the meanwhile, Panna has come to Mumbai with her male child, Kishore born to her with Gupta and she has taken a shelter in Jeevanlal’s (Jeevan) house who is a blackmailer. Fearing the child will be spoiled in the company of Jeevanlal, Panna sends the child with a letter in Gupta’s house. The letter is read by Maya which reveals that Kishore is the child of Gupta. In order to keep this development secret so that her husband’s reputation is not at stake, Maya tells her husband that she has adopted her sister’s son, Kishore because her husband has deserted her sister. Soon the secret is out when Jeevanlal visits Maya and blackmails her. Gupta hears all their conversations and suspecting that his wife has an affair, he expels her from the house. Johar enquires his father as to the whereabouts his mother. Fed-up with the constant pestering from Johar, Gupta sends him to the USA for his schooling where he continues his higher studies to become a lawyer against his wish.

The story takes a time jump of 20 year. Johar is returning from the USA after completing his studies. Gupta is shocked to see Johar who has become a sadhu. He speaks in pure Hindi with his father and does not like him to use words from any other languages. (Reminds me of Dharmendra disguised as driver who speaks in pure Hindi which Om Prakash is unable to decipher in ‘Chupke Chupke, 1975). Gupta decides to hire a fashion consultant from Poona (Pune) to make over Johar to a normal looking modern man. The fashion consultant happens to be Kishore to whom Veena had taken with him when she was expelled from Gupta’s house. Kishore stays with Gupta in Mumbai and soon finds that Johar has deliberately disguised as Sadhu to teach his father a lesson for depriving him of his mother’s love during his childhood. Both become friends. Simultaneously, Johar has been following with a private agent to locate his mother, Maya.

During the course of their disguised avatars, Kishore and Johar have been wooing Asha (Shahida), daughter of Champaklal (Asit Sen) and Lata (Meena Rai), the daughter of Jeevanlal, respectively. Lata falls in love with Johar and wants to marry him. But before that she wants to take the blessings from Sadhu Shrimaanji who is in reality is Johar. Somehow, Kishore manages to save Johar from his duplicity. However, Jeevanlal is against his daughter Lata marrying Johar. So, both Johar and Lata elope to Pune and get married.

During this period, Johar visits Kishore’s house in Pune with Lata and gets introduced to Maya as Kishore’s mother and he introduces Lata as his wife. While Maya recognises Johar as his son but is afraid to reveal so because of Kishore. In the meanwhile, in a restaurant, Jeevanlal sees Lata with Johar who tells him that he has just married Lata. A furious Jeevanlal forcibly takes Lata to his house and locks her in the room. Maya visits Jeevanlal’s house and plead for releasing Lata to join her husband, Johar but in vein. In frustration, Maya takes the gun lying on the table and fires on Jeevanlal who falls down. Maya is arrested for killing Jeevanlal.

In the court, Johar represents Maya though she has already admitted killing Jeevanlal in the court. In spite of Johar pleading with Maya to give him the background as to how she knew Jeevanlal. But she declines to reveal anything on this matter. While the case is now heavily loaded against Maya as even Lata, as a witness. has said that she has seen Maya firing from the gun at her father. However, browsing through a series of photographs taken by the police while making an inquest, Johar gets an impression of some mishandling of the dead body giving suspicion as to whether Jeevanlal has really died of bullets.

Johar and Kishore visits Morgue to check the dead body and finds Jeevanlal body but in hale and hearty condition. So, his killing was staged. But how to get him in the court to present as a proof of he being alive is a problem lest he will escape. Panna, the courtesan has a strategy as she knows that he is fond of attending courtesan’s dance. After he dance, Panna meets a drunk Jeevanlal who spills the beans during their conversations. Police arrest Jeevanlal and present him in the court at the next hearing of Maya’s case. The judge (Murad) acquits Maya and sends Jeevanlal in police custody.

During the court hearing, Gupta comes to know that Kishore is his son from Panna. His wife, Maya projected Kishore as her adopted son to protect him from slander, Gupta family unites.

Here is the sixth and final song of the movie. This song is picturised in a morgue where Kishore Kumar and I S Johar play dead bodies. Jeevan, who stage managed his “death” is present in the morgue in a hale and healthy situation. Just as he explains to the morgue guard (his accomplice) how he pretended to be dead fooling Maya devi, the two “dead” bodies of Kishore Kumar and I S Johar spring up into action and start singing this song in the voices of Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor respectively.

Aziz Kashmiri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

With this song, all the six songs of the movie are covered in the blog. This movie “Shrimaanji”(1968) thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Lyrics: (Based on video link)

naheen kuchh khata kisee kee
ye naseeb mein likhha thha
kate umr hotelon mein
maren haspataal aa kar

kafan mein ye mohabbat ke pujaaree dekhte jaao
zamaane ne jo kee haalat hamaaree dekhte jaao
kafan mein ye mohabbat ke pujaaree dekhte jaao
zamaane ne jo kee haalat hamaaree dekhte jaao
kafan mein sone waalon se na poochho
zindagee kya hai
na marte to bata dete jahaan ko
aashiqui kya hai

mujhe chaahat ne maara hai
ise kismat ne maara hai
magar is apne bhai ko
buree neeyat ne maara hai

lute hain kis tarah dil ke vyapaaree
dekhte jaao
zamaane ne jo kee haalat hamaaree dekhte jaao
ye soorat dekhne mein haay kitnee bholee bhaalee hai
kise maaloom hai isne kahaan keechad uchhaalee hai
kisee ke pyaar mein isne khadee deewaar kee hogee
yaqeenan do dilon kee bad dua bhee isne lee hogee
huye hain aaj khud ghaayal shikaaree dekhte jaao
zamaane ne jo kee haalat hamaaree dekhte jaao
jo ladte thhe jahaan mein ban ke hindu sikh isaai
wo is manzil pe aa kar ban gaye aapas mein hain bhai
bata de koi har soorat kafan mein kyun lapetee hai
ye jeewan hai
ye pinto hai
ye banta singh sethi hai

pade hain chain se kya kya khilaadee
dekhte jao
kafan mein ye mohabbat ke pujaaree dekhte jaao
zamaane ne jo kee haalat hamaaree dekhte jaao
