#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # Dhan Daulat-1980#

This by now forgotten song is from ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’. This ‘social’ movie was produced by Vinod Shah and directed by Harish Shah for Shilpkar, Bombay.

The cast of this movie has Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, Premnath, Pran, Sujit Kumar, Madan Puri, Agha, Sajjan, Kirti Kumar, Azad, Ranveer Raj, Shyam, Amal Sen, Amarnath Mukherjee, Birbal, Yusuf Khan, Master Sandeep and others. Kader Khan, Daljeet Kaur, Preeti Ganguly, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, and Master Raju had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.01.1980. Story of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick and its dialogues were written by Sagar Sarhadi.

I did not watch this movie during is first release (during my adolesecent years). Even in later years I did not get to watch this movie. However I was familiar with the most popular song from this movie i.e. the song ‘jeenaa kyaa ajee pyaar binaa’. As the movie was not a successful movie of its time, the movie and its’ songs were forgotten by time. No song from this movie ‘Dhan Daulat’ featured in the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of that year 1980.

As per IMDB this movie ranked at number fifty-seven among the top grossers and successful movies of the year 1980. The movies up to the rank of forty-five are considered at successful movies there. The story of this movie ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ offers nothing new and it is a familiar story that we have watched in many Hindi movies. In my previous post with a song from this movie I had given the story of this movie. Today again I am giving a summary of that story here:-

Raj Saxena (Rajendra Kumar) and Vasudha (Mala Sinha) love each other and want to marry. But Raj’s parents oppose to it and Raj is forced to abandon Vasudha, but he is not aware that she is pregnant. Vasudha gives birth to a male child and leaves him in a truck as she gets down to bring milk for him, but before she can return the truck drivers start the truck and Vasudha is left behind (so this child grows as ‘truck ka phool and not ‘dhool ka phool’:) ). The truck driver duo Mangat (Premnath) and Bajirao (Pran) bring this child to their home and look after him dreaming of growing up him to a good person. They give him a name ‘Lucky’. Mangat is a ‘Punjabi’ and Bajirao is ‘Marathi’, so lucky grows up calling both in their languages and speaking either a Punjabi-Marathi or Marathi-Punjabi combination and this continues till the movie ends. Well, Lucky grows up as a street-boy and do all mischievous things, be it his studies or in general in and around home (as is typical for a ‘Bombay-street-boy’ Hindi film hero then).

One day Shanti (Neetu Singh) is passing through Lucky’s house where he is locked by his father duo, but Shanti didn’t help him out. Now Lucky is after Shanti and soon develops a liking for her. Meanwhile Lucky comes to know that he was adopted by Mangat and Bajirao and they are not his parents. Vasudha also hears their conversation but could not come into open and telling Lucky that she is his mother. Lucky understands that he needs to earn money ‘by any way’ to be a successful person and to marry Shanti and took the revenge of his insult by Shanti’s father. He had once stolen the horse of Sujit Chopra (Prem Chopra) to impress Shanti. After knowing this Sujit got interested in Lucky. Lucky joins hands with Sujit Chopra who is in the business of ‘illegal businesses’ to amass wealth. Sujit Chopra and Raj Saxena are business rivals. So, as it happens the circumstances in this movie make the son pitted against his father till finally the truth is dawned upon him and everything gets well in the end and the family reunites with Lucky getting ‘four fathers’ including the father-in-law(Madan Puri) who happily gave his daughter’s hand in the hands of Lucky.

As mentioned above ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ has five songs, which were all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Rahul Dev Burman. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Master Raju had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier. When the first song from this movie was posted Atul jee has mentioned the following about Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s movies and their songs:-

“Just like we these days lament the deterioration in the quality of Bollywood music, people used to lament about such deterioration even in the past. I personally thought that many of the songs of 1970s were pedestrial and chaalu songs. But now with the passage of time, when I came across far worse songs, then I realised that the so called poor songs of 1970s were gems in comparison.

I always thought that the music of Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh movies was of chaalu kind with no soul, vis a vis songs from other movies of the same period. But most listeners lapped them up nevertheless. And interestingly enough, music in these Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh movies was given by R D Burman, my favourite music director, who was capable of creating far greater music than the stuff he got to create in these movies.

Here is a song from “Dhan Daulat” (1980) which at that time I regarded as a chaalu song. with the benefit of hindsight, I realise that songs like this are vastly superior to the stuff that we were subjected to in the subsequent years. This song may be chaalu in nature, but it is written with imagination and considerable care.”

Atul jee mentioned the above while presenting this song ‘jeenaa kyaa ajee pyaar binaa’ on the blog on 11.06.2010. The second song from this movie was posted on 11.06.2020 and this song was ‘shikwaa na koi tumse naa tumpe hai koi zor’ and the third song to be posted from this movie was ‘wo jinkee nayee hai duniyaa’ posted on 12.04.2025. In the movie these three songs appear at number 3, 5 and 4 respectively or in the later part of the movie. And these three songs by that standard are nice, meaningful and one of them is even to the standard of a ‘gem of songs’. And one can also notice the words in the lyrics as the situation in this movie changes according to the story.

In the song ‘jeenaa kyaa ajee pyaar binaa’ we have verses where ‘Love is above ‘Dhan Daulat’ – i.e. jeenaa kyaa aji pyaar binaa jeewan ke yahi chaar dinaa, dhan-daulat binaa chale magar, zindagi naa chale yaar binaa, mili duniyaa to mazaa hai ki mile dil bhi, bindiyaa bhi khhanke ho baje paayal bhi… And as the hero gets into the world of ‘Wealth’ we have these lines in the fourth song ‘imaan dharam ki yaaron, baatein hain tamaam, har naam se oonchaa hai jee, dhan daulat kaa naam, sun ae mere dil ab teree duniyaa hai yahee ee’ … ‘hamko to miley har dil mein, oonche hee mahal, paise ki khanak se khilte dekhein hain kamal, ek ham kyaa hain isee dhun ke deewaane sabhee, peechchhe nahin dekhaa karte, mud mud ke kabhee ee ….So, here we have ‘Dhan Daulat’ taking precedence over ‘love’.

The remaining two songs from this movie are definitely the type of ‘chaalu songs’ that are typical for these types of movies. The song under discussion is the first song of the movie where the typical ‘nok-jhonk’ takes place between the two and love is yet to blossom. That blossing of love would happen after the another ‘chaalu song’is lip synced by the duo. 🙂

In the picturisation we see Rishi Kapoor chasing Neetu Singh throughout Bombay using various means of transport. The girl finally takes refuge in a drum and that drum, with her in it is lifted by a crane as the song ends.

Let us now enjoy this nice song from the time when Pancham was at the peak of his prowess.
