‘Trimurti’ (1974) was produced and directed by Rajendra Bhatia. The cast included Sanjay Khan, Parveen Babi, Rakesh Roshan, Asrani, A K Hangal, I S Johar, Bipin Gupta, Keshto Mukherjee, Praveen Paul, Sarita Joshi, Arpana Chaudhary, Kanchan Matoo, Bhanumati, Arvind Trivedi etc, with special appearances by Indrani Mukherjee, Vinod Sharma, Gulshan Bawra, Krishnakant and Upendra Trivedi.

The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with a repentance by a mill owner, Jagannath (A K Hangal) for abandoning his pregnant wife Laxmi (Indrani Mukherjee) after falling for a courtesan. He has adopted Sunila (Parveen Babi) after the death of her mother when her father has become a hermit (Bipin Gupta) in Haridwar. Jagannath has put his younger brother, Balram (Arvind Trivedi) to search for the son born to Laxmi as he is keen to make him the beneficiary of all his wealth.

The family of Kalyani (Achala Sachdev) lives in a poverty in a hutment with her three sons – Vijay (Sanjay Khan), Nandu (Rakesh Roshan) and Bhola (Asrani). They all are uneducated and unemployed. Their only earning is through cheating, sometime by camouflaging different characters like policeman and the prince. They are also local troublemakers who are called Trimurti.

Shadilal Mirchandani (I S Johar), a businessman lives with his two wives, Maya (Praveen Paul) and Shanti (Sarita Joshi) and two daughters, Meena (Kanchan Mattoo) and Manju (Arpana Chaudhary). He is money minded as he always talk about how to make more money. His daughters are friendly with Sunila who had gone on a picnic. However, on the way, some ruffians create nuisance for them when three brothers save them from molestation. So, it is the first stage of the affinity between Vijay and Sunila, Nandu and Manju and Bhola and Meena which later turns into their love affairs. All three brothers go to Shadilal’s house with royal outfits hired from a dress supplier (Krishnakant) as prince to impress upon Shadilal so that he agrees for the marriage of his two daughters and later become the beneficiaries of his wealth.

One day, Nandu is caught in a shuffle in Shadilal’s house. Police arrest him and put him in a lock-up. Kalyani tries hard to get him release from the police but fails. Finally, she lands in Jagannath’s house and reveals that Nandu is none other than his son born to Laxmi who had handed over to her son before her death. She gives him the proof of her lockets. Jagannath is very happy. He gets Nandu released from the police custody by requesting Shadilal to withdraw his FIR against him. Jagannath brings Nandu to stay in a palatial bungalow in a life of luxuries.

After some time, the newly found luxurious life makes Nandu stubborn with everyone including his brothers. The main point of conflict specially with his elder brother, Vijay, is that Jagannath has already committed that he would get married Sunila to his friend’s son while Vijay has challenged Nandu that he would definitely get married to Sunila. Nandu is instigated by Balram that Vijay is insisting on marrying Sunila so that he gets a share of Jagannath’s wealth.

The story takes a new twist. Kalyani is shocked by the treatment Nandu has given her while on a visit to his bungalow. With this shock, she is met with a car accident. She is hospitalised during which time, she spills the beans. She tells Vijay that Nandu is not the son of Jagannath. She had lied only to get Nandu released from the police custody. The real son of Laxmi and Jagannath is Vijay. Jagannath who was on a visit to the hospital to see Kalyani hears this conversations. The situation turns against Nandu who is not prepared to accept the new developments. He challenges Jagannath that if required, he would eliminate whoever comes in his way including him in altering his new found status.

The story now turns into a suspense. Jagannath is found killed by a gun shot. He falls into the sea and goes missing. Apparently, the prime suspect is Nandu who had threatened everyone including Jagannath to eliminate them if he is deprived of his new found status. The second suspect is Balram, Jagannath’s younger brother who in the event of the death of Jagannath would have become the successor to his wealth if his lost son was not found.

At the end, it turns out that the gun shot fired by someone was other than the prime suspects, that is, Shadilal who fired the gun at Jagannath to scare him away when he was expecting the contraband of smuggled goods. His shot missed Jagannath who jumped into sea to save himself. He turns up with the police team at a time when Balram is forcing Kalyani to sign on a paper that all three sons are her own so that he becomes the sole beneficiary of his elder brother, Jagannath’s wealth. Shadilal and Balram are arrested on charge of smuggling of precious stones.

The film ends with Vijay, Nandu and Bhola with their mother shifting to Jagannath’s palatial bungalow. All the three brothers take a stand that they do not need wealth of Jagannath. On the contrary, they all will work in Jagannath’s mill as workers and earn the salary.

The film had five songs written by Gulshan Bawra which were set to music by R D Burman. On the occasion of the 87th birth anniverssary of Rahul Dev Burman today, June 27, 2026, I present the 3rd song, which is an unusual song from the stable of magical Pancham. It is a comical song composed in qawwali style. The song is ‘daulat ke rang hazaar hain’ which is rendered by Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Pankaj Mitra and Bhushan. Manna Dey sings for I S Johar and for Sanjay Khan while Asha Bhosle sings for Kanchan Matoo, Arpana Chaudhary and Parveen Babi in that order. Pankaj Mitra and Bhushan have sung for Asrani and Rakesh Roshan respectively and also for Sanjay Khan at second instance. The lyrics have two Sindhi words – ‘Vadee’ and ‘Saain’.

The context of the song is a party hosted by a wealthy businessman (A K Hangal) in celebration of his lost and now found son, Nandu (Rakesh Roshan). During the party, a musical game is played in which when the moving spotlight stops on any guest, he has to sing spontaneously. Hence the lyrics are free flowing without much connection to the situation. The first spotlight falls on I S Johar who is confused as to what to sing. At that time, A K Hangal gives him a hint to sing on ‘daulat’ because he is money minded. Thereafter, the spotlight falls on Kanchan Matoo, Asrani, Rakesh Roshan, Arpana Chaudhary, Sanjay Khan and lastly on Parveen Babi who moves away from the commical elements to give a philosophical finale.

usko phir koi gham naheen hotaa
pyaar hee sabse badee daulat hai
pyaar badhtaa hai kam naheen hotaa
pyaar badhtaa hai kam naheen hotaa

ye raaz hamen maaloom na thhaa

ye raaz hamen maaloom na thhaa
daulat ke rang hazaar hain
