Hullo Atuldom
“Maha Chor” (release date 1st January 1976) is an action comedy film produced & directed by Narendra Bedi, starring Rajesh Khanna in the lead role, paired opposite Neetu Singh (for the very first time.) The film had music by R.D. Burman (with Basu-Manohari-Maruti Rao as assistants) and the lyricist (whom Rajesh Khanna preferred for his films) Anand Bakshi. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar & Anand Bakshi (himself) were the playback singers of the six songs in the film.
The film’s cast (as per the titles) is Rajesh Khanna (in a double role), Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra & Aruna Irani with Kamini Kaushal, Manorama, Anwar Hussain, Krishan Dhawan, Rajan Haksar, Man Mohan, Master Lollypop, Viju Khote, Birbal, Narbada Shankar, Jagdish Raj, Protima Devi, Pinchoo Kapoor, Satyen Kappu (credited as Satyendra) and a special appearance by Sonia Sahni. Kadar Khan was credited as the dialogue writer & Narinder Bedi & Dev Kishan for the story. The choreographer for the film was Suresh Bhatt.
A few words about Dev Kishan (whom I have mentioned in the previous paragraph). He is one of the nameless character actors, who is seen in many films, playing the trusted-help of the family as in ‘Seeta aur Geeta’, ‘Chupke Chupke’ (he offers tea to Om Prakash in Asrani’s house), ‘Anand’ (the man-friday in Babu Moshai’s house) etc. etc. and in numerous other films, donning varied characters beginning with ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (1950) {as per what I discovered on the internet}. Additionally, he was a story & dialogue writer for a few films like ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962) and a lyricist in one or two films. He is someone about whom very little information is available; I think the stalwarts, among the followers of this blog will be able to enlighten us.
Coming back to “Maha Chor”.
It is the story of an orphaned (at a young age), Rajkumari Neetu Singh (the character is also called Neetu Singh, very imaginative), who lives a wealthy lifestyle in Raigadh, in a palace which is presided over by her aunt, Rani Maa (Kamini Kaushal), and Neetu’s paternal uncle, Rajan Singh (Rajan Haksar). She travels and lives for a few years in Switzerland, then returns back to Bombay, India, and has a run-in with some slum-dwellers near Juhu. A few days later she is abducted by two men, who had initially claimed to be her palace guards, and is rescued by a male named Raju Khan (Rajesh Khanna), a car thief and con-man, who was one of the slum dwellers in Juhu. She reaches Raigadh and shortly thereafter is shocked to find out that Raju is claiming to be the long-lost son of Rani Maa and her betrothed. Her disbelief turns to love when the Court Astrologer confirms that Raju indeed is the sole heir to Raigadh, and both of them fall in love with each other much to the displeasure of Prem Singh (Prem Chopra), the illegitimate son of Dilip Singh (Anwar Hussain)) who wants Neetu and Raigadh for himself. What Neetu does not know is that Prem has hired Raju to impersonate Rani Maa’s son. Inspite of Rajesh Khanna being in a double role, there is no confusion of the look-alikes changing places etc. The double role is meant as a tool for the conspirators (Prem Chopra, Anwar Hussain, Manorama) to con Rani Maa into believing the car-thief is the heir to the throne. The film goes through to its (il)logical typical masala film end.
That, is the synopsis of the film.
The following five songs of the film are present on the blog:
| Song | Date of post | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Main tumse pyaar kartee hoon | 29 December 2011 | (Atulji pouring his heart about the superstar on the actor’s birthday) (4th song of the film) |
| Meethhee meethhee ankhiyon se man bhar de | 18 Juny 2016 | (Atulji pouring his heart about the superstar on the actor’s death anniversary) (5th song of the film) |
| Hindu hoon main na Musalmaan hoon main | 30 March 2021 | (Avinash Scarpwala) (2nd song of the film) |
| Sun Banto baat meree | 19 July 2022 | (Peevesie’s Mom) (3rd song of the film) |
| Mera naam yaaron Mahachor hai | 30 March 2023 | (Peevesie’s Mom) (1st song in the film) |
With today’s post ‘Maha Chor’ attains YYIIPPEEEEhood. This song has Aruna Irani (character is called Rani) lip syncing to the vocals of Lata Mangeshkar in the climax of the film. The song is almost like ‘maar diya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye’ situation.
Today we are celebrating the birth anniversary of the PANCHAMDA who was born to legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman & his wife Meera. He was called Rahul & Pancham was a pet name. Panchamda is said to have been called so, since as a baby he would cry in five different notes. Another story says that veteran actor Ashok Kumar saw the new born Rahul uttering the syllable PA repeatedly, and nicknamed him Pancham.
RDB was trained by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan & Samta Prasad. He considered Salil Chowdhury as his guru & was an assistant to his father and often played the harmonica in his orchestra in films of the 1950s/60s prominently in ‘hai apna dil to aawara’. His debut would have been through ‘Raaz’ made by Guru Dutt’s assistant, but that never got made & ‘Chhote Nawab’, produced by Mehmood became his debut film. With ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966) he made a place for himself in the lives of followers of Hindi film music. Other than Hindi & Bengali, RDB has given music to films in Tamil & Telugu.
Thinking of this amazing music director today on what would have been his 87th birthday.
