Hullo Atuldom

Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj (7 January 1953 – 27 June 2026) was an Indian filmmaker, actor, musician. He worked predominantly in Tamil cinema, while also directing and acting in films in other Indian languages. He wrote and directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 films, and was regarded as one of the most influential writer-directors in Tamil cinema during the 1980s. He edited the Tamil weekly magazine “Bhagya” and authored several novels.

Bhagyaraj began working in the Tamil film industry in the mid-1970s as an assistant director under Bharathiraja (who also passed away earlier this month) in films like ’16 Vayathinile’ (1977) , ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ (1978); which were remade in Hindi as ‘Solva Sawan’ (1979) & ‘Red Rose’ (1980); and a few more. He began writing scripts and dialogues for films, while also appearing in smaller acting roles.

Beginning in the early 1980s, Bhagyaraj started directing films and often appeared in the lead role in the films he scripted and directed, effectively carving out a niche for himself in the actor-auteur vein. His style of filmmaking is notable for its relatively elaborate, witty, and double entendre-laced script and socially-themed framework. His on-screen personae are typically characterised by their ironic sense of humour and intelligent bravado.

Bhagyaraj became nationally famous when he wrote the script for “Masterji” (1985) with Rajesh Khanna in the lead role, which was huge success at the box office. This was a remake of the 1983 romantic comedy ‘Mundhanai Mudichu’ (meaning the knot in the pallu of a saree). When Bhagyaraj decided to direct the Hindi remake of Bharatiraja’s 1984 directorial venture ‘Oru Kaidhiyin Diary’ (A prisoner’s Dairy) he is said to have approached Rajesh Khanna, but due to date issues of Kaka, Bhagyaraj is said to have cast Amitabh Bachchan in the Hindi remake ‘Aakhree Raasta’ (1986) with the backing of Jaya Bhadhuri (as per what I have read at various places on the net & the magazines of those times).

In the 1990s, many Tamil movies that were made by Bhagyaraj were remade in Hindi by David Dhawan, Mukesh Duggal etc.; ‘Raja Babu’ (1994), ‘Andaz’ (1994), ‘Gopi Kishan’ (1994), ‘Gharwali Baharwali’ (1998) to name a few.
In his personal life, Bhagyaraj was initially married to Praveena who died of jaundice in 1983. Then he married Poornima Jayaram who is remembered for her roles in the Hindi films ‘Paheli’ (1977), ‘Dillagi’ (1978), ‘Ratnadeep’ (1979) & ‘Dard’ (1981). Poornima & Bhagyaraj were co-actors in a few south Indian movies before they settled for wedded life. The couple have produced successful films in the 43 years that they were together. The couple have two children – both of whom are actors and filmmakers.

K. Bhagyaraj passed away this morning due to a cardiac arrest as per the news that broke around afternoon today. Om Shanthi!🙏

Since I spoke of “Aakhree Raasta” let us have a song from the film to enjoy the director’s vision where a successful south Indian film was made in a manner that the Hindi film audiences also devoured it.
“Aakhree Raasta” had Jaya Prada & Sridevi as the female lead, with Anupam Kher, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Om Shivpuri, Bharat Kapoor, Viju Khote, etc. in the supporting cast. Amitabh Bachchan played father and son (a double role). Rekha had dubbed for Sridevi. Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors of songs written by Anand Bakshi. S. Janaki, Mohd. Aziz, Anuradha Paudwal were the playback singers used. The film was produced by A. Purnachandra Rao & presented by T. Rama Rao under the banner Lakshmi Productions (Madras) Pvt. Ltd.

The film was the story of David (father Amitabh Bachchan), an ex-convict, who is bent on revenge, against the people responsible for his wrongful imprisonment but is pit against his estranged son (Vijay) who is now a police officer.

Here is the song which is picturised in Ooty, on the shores of the lake which was a permanent fixture in many films of those times.
