‘Meree Adaalat’ (1984) was produced by U S N Babu and K C N Chandrasekhar under the banner of Krishna Arts and was directed by A T Raghu. The cast included Rajnikanth, Zeenat Aman, Kader Khan, Sonia Sahni, Mohnish Bahl, Komal Mahauvakar, Rajendranath, Shreeram Lagoo, Manjula, Monty, Birbal, Dev Kumar, Raj Kishore etc. The film was a remake of Kannada film, ‘Aasha’ (1983).

This is one more film with the story of a law enforcer who becomes vigilante after he does not get the justice from the judicial system and the law enforcing agencies for murder of his own family member. If I remember, there were few films like ‘Shahenshah’ (1988), ‘Indrajit’ (1991). in which Amitabh Bachchan’s role had turned vigilante

The story of the film is as under:

Inspector Ashok (Rajnikanth) is a tough police officer who stays with his sister, Asha (Komal Mahuvakar). People in the city call him ‘Rowdy Inspector’. Journalist Pramila (Zeenat Aman) is in love with Inspector Ashok who reciprocates her love. Mohan Raj (Kadar Khan) is a wealthy person who stays in the same city with his wife (Sonia Sahni) and their only son, Shrikant (Monty). Judge (Shreeram Lagoo) is Mohan Raj’s brother-in-law, their wives being real sisters. Arjun (Mohnish Bahl) is Judge’s son.

Asha, Shrikant and Arjun study in the same college. Arjun performs well in college sports competitions against his own cousin, Shrikant, which creates jealousy in the mind of Shrikant against Arjun. Also, Shrikant is notorious in the college in creating nuisance for the girls, while Shrikant is docile in nature and reprimands Shrikant and his friends for troubling college girls. So, Shrikant covertly dislikes Arjun. Arjun has a soft corner for Asha who does not show the same feelings for him assuming that he is also one like his cousin, Shrikant.

During a college picnic at a waterfall, Arjun saves Asha from molestation by a local ruffian and also from drowning. Asha and Arjun fall in love with each other and after a couple of meetings, they decide to get married with the approval of their parents. The marriage is solmanised.

On the day when Asha and Arjun have proceeded on the honeymoon, Asha plays a prank on her brother, Inspector Ashok which makes him and Pramila to visit the designated place to get them free from the kidnappers. Asha has already known that her brother and Pramila like each other. This prank is only to pave the way to convert their liking into a marital bond.

During the honeymoon, Asha is found murdered and Arjun is hospitalised with serious injuries. The postmortem report of Asha indicates that she was raped before being killed. The further evidences points to a killer of 20-22 years of age. After hearing the sad news, Pramila visits Inspector Ashok in his house and recalls one incidence in the college of an altercation between Asha and Shrikant during which Asha was threatened by Shrikant that for the insult she showered on him in the presence of his friends, one day he would take revenge.

With his intense investigation and forensic evidences, Inspector Ashok takes Shrikant and his three accomplished into police custody. One of the accomplishes belches out that it was Shrikant who has raped and killed Asha. Mohan Raj, Shrikant’s father tries to give him a big bribe to withdraw the charges of murder on Shrikant but of no avail. Finally, Mohan Raj threatens him that with his influences and money power, he would see that he loses his job.

One day, one of the accomplishes of Shrikant who has agreed to be witness is found dead. Actually, he was strangulated by Shrikant in the jail to prevent him from becoming a witness to the murder. Soon, Inspector Ashok is suspended from the police services for his ‘brutal’ interrogation resulting the death. Now, the only witness to the murder of Asha is her husband Arjun who also happens to be nephew of Mohan Raj’s wife. Mohan Raj emotionally convinces his wife that to save Shrikant and himself, she will have to kill Shrikant. She visits the hospital and removes the oxygen tube resulting in Arjun’s death.

In the court, in the absence of two key witnesses and other witnesses turning hostile, the judge acquits Shrikant and his accomplished from murder. Ashok takes a vow that the court which pronounced them not guilty, his own court will give them capital punishment. Pramila tries to prevent him from taking law into his own hand but he walks away by saying that his love for her will not stop him from giving them the capital punishment. Pramila gets the police informed about the intention of Ashok.

In the meanwhile, Ashok visits a restaurant where Shrikant and his friends are celebrating their releases from the court. Ashok fights with them killing Shrikant and forcing his friends to dig the grave to put the dead body of Shrikant in it. He then telephones to Mrs. Mohan Raj that his son has met with a car accidents outside a cemetery. Mohan Raj and his wife rush to the spot and Ashok shows them his grave which is yet to be covered. He reminds Mohan Raj that he has always boasted about his moneys power and high connection which will save his son from the murder charges. Can he do that now to regain his son with that power? Both Mohan Raj and his wife die of shock. The film ends with Ashok surrendering to the police team which reach at the spot along with Pramila.

The film had five songs written by Indeevar which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘raajaa jee bolo jee’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Shabbir Kumar and Asha Bhosle singing for Mohnish Bahl and Komal Mahuvakar, respectively. Incidentally, Komal Mahuvakar has worked in the many South Indian films with the screen name, Rupini.

The context of the song is that Arjun (Mohnish Bahl) and Asha (Komal Mahuvakar) have joined the college picnic during which Arjun saves Asha from a local ruffian from molestation as also from drowning in a stream. They fall in love with each other. During the campfire in the night, some students are playing musical instruments and dancing. Arjun and Asha exchange glances at each other after which Arjun goes into his wild imagination of he and Asha rushing out from a royal palace and start singing song in a royal buggy.
