Today’s drunkard song is from the movie ‘Mawaali-1983’.
‘Mawaali-1983’ was directed by K. Bapaiyya for ‘Padmalaya Studios, Madras’. G. Hanumantha Rao was the producer of this ‘social’ movie passed by Censor Board on 28.10.1983.
By this time in 1983 I was studying in Std-XI with ‘PCM+ Vocational Subjects’. But, I was more interested in cricket and Rajesh Khanna movies than in my studies. But even then I had not watched this movie ‘Mawaali-1983’. I was averse to these Jeetendra movies coming from South directors except ‘Himmatwaalaa’ (since it was a first of its kind and discussed a lot then), ‘Tohfaa’ and ‘Maqsad’. ‘Tohfaa’ had some good songs and I watched it with many interested family members who had assigned me the task of booking the tickets for this movie.
For that matter I had never listened to the songs coming from Jeetendra-south movies and composed by Bappi Lahiri especially. Readers following the music of such movies then are well aware of the quality of songs and music these movies were bringing with them. But, the from such movies were played all over and people loved (excluding me) them to listen to, e.g. songs like ‘jhopdee mein chaarpaayee’, ‘uee ammaa uee amaa’ from this same movie and songs from movies like ‘Justice Chaudhary-1983’ etc.
But I never liked these songs and hence I never paid attention to them. I consider few songs of ‘Himmatwaalaa-1983’ as good songs and since I watched this movie I liked them too.
I would not watch Jeetendra movies coming from South Indian production houses. Despite that I watched ‘Maqsad’. The reason was that Rajesh Khanna too figured in this movie.
When I checked for the preparation of this post I noted that the song ‘jhopdee mein chaarpaayee’ from this movie ‘Mawaali’ ranked at number 9 in the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of 1984. As fr as the song under discussion s concerned, I was only aware of its mukhdaa till a few days back.I listened to this song attentively only when I had to note down its lyrics. Now Irealise that it is a wonderful creation of Bappi Lahiri.
“Mawaali-1983” had Jeetendra, Jayaprada, Shreedevi, Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Aruna Irani, Prem Chopra and others. This movie also had friendly appearances of Asrani, Nutan Prasad and Urmila Bhatt. Lyricist Indeevar wrote the lyrics for all the five songs this movie has. Music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Playback singers for this movie are Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle only.
Situation of the song is that the hero of the movie Jeetendra has to do inauguration of a country liquor shop. As is usual he is asked to taste the liquor. Initially he refuses, hoping that the organisers will keep insisting, but when the organisers are on the vberge of taking back the offer, he immediately accepts the offer. That is when this song takes place as part of the celebration of opening of the liquor shop (hope I am right).
Jeetendra is seen lip syncing in the voice of Kishore Kumar. Asrani Shreedevi and many others also join him in dancing with gusto. I could not identify the girl who dances in the starts of the song. Subsequently her place is taken by Shreedevi (as imagined by Jeetendra).
I hope readers will enjoy this song as much as I did. The audio link has the full ‘mukhdaa’ repeating after every stanza while the video is shorter in length.
