‘Insaaniyat’ (1974) was produced by Jagdish Varma-Satpal Varma and was directed by Manmohan Desai-Prayag Raj. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Madhu, Sujit Kumar, Durga Khote, Mubarak, Kamal Kapoor, Krishan Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Jagdish Raj, Kumud Tripathi, Sulochana, Lata Sinha, Viju Khote, Satyarani, Hari Shivdasani, Arati, Mridula Rani, Roopesh Kumar, Jagdeep, Jayant etc. During the midway of the film’s shooting, director, Manmohan Desai left the film due to differences with the producers. Prayag Raj was roped in as the director to complete the film.
Producers Jagdish and Satpal Varma are the sons of producer-director, Bhagwandas Varma who had founded Varma Films in partnership with his five brothers. The banner produced films like ‘Suhaag Raat’ (1948), ‘Patanga’ (1949), ‘Baadal’ (1951), ‘Aurat’ (1953), ‘Pooja’ (1954), Baaghi Sipaahi’ (1958), ‘Main Nashe Main Hoon’ (1959)’ etc.
The name of the actress, Madhu may create the ‘same name confusion’ as there are three actresses with the same name. The senior most Madhu (real name: Mahliqa) was the younger sister of Meena Kumari who had started working as a child artist with the name, Baby Madhuri in ‘Viswaas’ (1943). After some time, she has done the adult roles in many Hindi films under the name, Madhu until 1980. Some of the films she acted as Madhu were ‘Madhu’ (1959), ‘Kinaare Kinaare’ (1963), ‘Hulchul’ (1971), ‘Roti’ (1974), ‘Khan Dost’ (1976) etc. Madhu got married to Mehmood in 1953. Singer-actor, Lucky Ali is their son. After the divorce from Mehmood in 1967, Madhu married Kishore Sharma who was Meena Kumari’s Secretary.
Madhu (Madhu Makkar nee Varma) in the film under discussion is the daughter of Munshiram Varma (brother of producer-director, Bhagwandas Varma) who made her debut in the film under discussion. Probably, this is the only film in which she worked. Later, she got married to Surinder Makkar who had done a role of a circus trapeze artist in ‘Insaaniyat’ (1974).
The third Madhoo (Madhu Malini) is the niece of Hema Malini who acted as a child artist in the film. ‘Sharaafat Chhod Di Maine’ (1976). Her first film as a lead actress was ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ (1991), followed by ‘Roja’ (1992) and many more. Madhoo is still active in the films in supporting roles.
There is one more Madhu but her name is unlikley to create ‘same name confusion’ as she appeared in the films as Madhu Malhotra during 1979-99.
‘Insaaniyat’ (1974) revolves around the protagonist’s endeavour to search for the killer of his entire family to take the revenge. After so much of the efforts put forward by him, the killer is identified but the protagonist is not aware that the killer is the father of his best friend who has so far presumed that his father was killed by the police in an encounter. The friend is under dilemma and the protagonist without knowing his target is his close friend’s father, kills the dreaded criminal. It turns out at the end that the actual killer of the dreaded criminal was someone else.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Dilip (Shashi Kapoor) and Ram (Sujit Kumar) are childhood friends from their school days. As they grow into adulthood, they have become very close friends. Now they stay in different cities but they keep in contact with each other. Ram has got married to Abhilasha (Lata Sinha) and stays with his mother (Durga Khote). Being the son of a wealthy father, Karamchand (Mubarak), Dilip spends most of his time in a carefree manner as he likes.
Karamchand wants Dilip to get married to bring some disciplined life in him. So, he arranges his marriage with Asha (Aarti), the daughter of his friend, Poonamchand (Hari Shivdasani). But Dilip likes Leena (Madhu). So, Dilip runs away to his friend Ram’s house to pursue his interest in Leena. Ram tells him that to woo Leena, he has to have some knowledge about hunting to impress her as she is a hunter. Initially, Leena does not get impressed with his dramatics as a hunter but eventually she falls in love with him.
One day, Dilip receives a telegram that his father has been hospitalised. He rushes to the hospital. Karamchand reveals to him that he is not his son but the son of a judge. With these words, Karamchand passes away. The family retainer, Ramu Kaka (Krishan Dhawan) reveals that his real father was a Judge (Kamal Kapoor) who had pronounced the death sentence to a dreaded criminal, Raghuvir (Jayant). To take the revenge against the judge, Raghuvir had escaped from the jail and killed his parents, sister and brother. The police team arrived and chased Raghuvir who jumped in the river when he was hit by a gunshot by the police. Luckily, 3-year Dilip was saved because he was with Ramu Kaka outside the house. Judge’s friend, Karamchand adopts Dilip and retains Ramu Kaka and takes a promise from him that he would not tell anything to Dilip so that he should not feel that he was brought up as a destitute.
Years have passed. Raghuvir has survived after jumping in the river and has changed himself as Diwan, the owner of a Circus. After hearing the story, Dilip is obsessed with taking revenge by killing Raghuvir. He gives an advertisement in the newspaper declaring a reward of Rs.25000/- to anyone who gives him the whereabout of Raghuvir.
Michael (Surinder Makkar), a trapeze artist in the circus, responds to the advertisement of reward and asks Dilip to meet him after the last show of the circus to share the whereabout of Raghuvir. Dilip watches the circus performance when, to his horror, Michael gets killed while doing his trapeze performance as he falls down straight on the ground without the support of the net. It was the handiwork of Raghuveer’s righthand man, Girdharilal (Roopesh Kumar). But with this act, Dilip suspects that Raghuvir is somewhere in the circus. So, he joins the circus to fill the vacancy of Michael as the trapeze artist.
Somehow, Diwan starts suspecting Dilip and to be on the safer side, he decides to kill him in the same way as he has killed Michael in the guise of the accidental death while performing in the circus. But Dilip already suspecting Girdharilal, his partner in the circus performance, takes enough precaution to safeguard himself.
Meanwhile, Ram visits Mumbai to meet Dilip to personally convey his condolence after the death of his father. When he comes to know the full story from Ramu Kaka, Ram visits the circus and meets the circus owner, Diwan asking the whereabouts of Dilip. He clarifies that Dilip has taken a vow to kill his father Raghuvir who is presumed dead long ago. Hence, he does not want his friend, Dilip to kill a wrong person and get the death sentence. Diwan is momentarily perplexed because his son is in front of him. But he recovers and tells Ram to advise his friend, Dilip not to put his life at risk.
Ram tries to convince Dilip not to pursue his revenge killing because, first Raghuvir is presumed dead and secondly, there is no point in taking ‘revenge for revenge’ as there will be end to humanity (Insaaniyat) if this cycle is followed everywhere. But Dilip is now obsessed with revenge and reveals to him that he has come to knows that Diwan in reality is Raghuvir. Ram is in dilemma whether to reveal Dilip that Raghuvir is his father.
In the night, Dilip sneaks into Diwan’s house and take out the gun to shoot him. Diwan runs outside his house. Dilip follows him and shoots Diwan killing him. He escapes and in the next day, he goes to police station to surrender before the police Inspector (Jagdish Raj) for killing Raghuvir. However, the police inspector tells him that he has already arrested Ram who has confessed for killing Raghuvir. This was an act on the part of Ram in order to save Dilip. The police inspector is confused and to be safe, he also put Dilip in police lock up.
After some exchange of words between Ram and Dilip, Ram reveals that he had followed him on the night and after gunshots, he has seen Girdharilal also near the spot of the crime. Now, Dilip sees a new angle to the crime. Both escape from the police jeep when they were being taken the crime spot and visit circus to pressurise Girdharilal through Leena who has joined the circus as a dancer, to get to know after serving him drinks. Girdharilal in his inebriated state tells Leena that he has killed Diwan because he was constantly under threat from him because he knew that Diwan was Raghuvir. So, he found the opportunity to kill him when he became aware that Dilip was going to kill him. Actually, the bullets from Girdharilal’s gun killed Diwan as Dilip’s gunshot failed to hit him, being not familiar with shooting. Girdharilal is arrested on the basis of his confession. Ram and Dilip are released.
The film has three songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri (2) and Indeewar (1) which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd and the final song, “Baat Bhi Kya Hum Se Karoge Nahin” which is rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Madhu. The song is written by Indeewar.
The context of the song is that after killing Raghuvir (Jayant) in his house as a revenge, Dilip is on his way to return home to surrender before the police. As soon as he stops the car, he sees Leena (Madhu) waiting for him as she has not met him for many days. However, Dilip is not in a mood for a romantic tit-a-tete. Leena tries to make the situation lighter by singing the song, the lyrics of which convey as to what is bothering Dilip which Leena is not aware.
