Today’s song is the last and final song from a lesser known social film ‘Ek Shola’ (1958).
This film title contains the starting word ‘Ek’, one of the most favorite words of the filmmakers. This word ‘Ek’ is used in 206 film titles, from 1931 to 2012. The film was the first film produced by Deep Khosla and Pradeep Kumar, for their own banner Deep and Pradeep productions, Bombay. It was a joint venture of Deep Khosla and Pradeep Kumar. Deep Khosla, writer-actor became a partner in Pradeep Kumar’s film production company and produced its first film, ‘Ek Shola’ (1958) which went to the production sometime in 1956. Thereafter, the banner produced ‘Ek Jhalak’ (1957), ‘Police’ (1958) and ‘Do Dilon Ki Daastaan’ (1966). In between, their partnership ran into some problems because of trust deficits between Deep Khosla and Pradeep Kumar. It is stated that as a part of the settlement between the two partners, Pradeep Kumar acted free in ‘Batwaara’ (1961) which was produced under the banner of Deep and Sandeep Productions. Sandeep was the son of Kalidas, the brother of Pradeep Kumar. ‘Do Dilon Ki Daastaan’ (1966) was the last released film under the banner, Deep and Pradeep Productions.
The film was directed by Chander Sehgal. Not much is known about Chander Sehgal, except that he directed only 2 films – ‘Ek Shola’ and ‘Mitti Mein Sona’ (1960). He died on 29-5-1960. The cast of the film is Pradeep Kumar, Mala Sinha, Jawahar Kaul, Leela Mishra, Nazir Hussain, Shubha Khote, Tun Tun, Dhumal, Deep khosla, Kathana, Ranjana Shukla etc etc.
In Hindi films, there have been three actors who were very handsome and very lucky but zero in acting – Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar and Bharat Bhushan. They all appeared in leading roles opposite all leading actresses of their times. They had the best films, best songs and best roles. Karan Dewan had about 25 Silver Jubilees to his credit and was considered a lucky star. Bharat Bhushan had the most musical films to his credit like ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), ‘Shabaab’ (1954) and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) etc. Pradeep Kumar had ‘Anarkali’ (1953) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963).
All three had their brothers producing films for them. Gemini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan, R. Chandra made films for Bharat Bhushan and Kalidas for Pradeep Kumar. Unfortunately, in later years, all three lost everything and died in poverty and neglectful anonymity. Karan Dewan was a manager with BR Chopra’s production company. When he died no one came for his funeral except for Chandrashekhar and Manmohan Krishan from the Cine Artists Association. Bharat Bhushan even worked as a watchman in a film studio, in his last days. He too died unsung and only the men from the Association were present at the cremation.
Pradeep Kumar’s case is the saddest. He lay seriously ill in the ICU of a Calcutta nursing home, abandoned by his relatives. The hospital was not discharging him, unless the bills were paid. Luckily one Mr. Pradeep Kondaliya, an estate agent, recognised him, despite his grown beard. He paid the huge outstanding bill of the hospital and took Pradeep Kumar to his home, where he passed away after a few days. He was cremated by his fan. Such is the film industry – cruel and ruthless, where the recognition lasts only till one is successful, and even close relatives desert you in bad times.
The lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri and music was by Madan Mohan. Surprisingly, there was not a single song by Lata in this film of Madan Mohan. There were 8 songs in the film and Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhosle were the female singers, with Mohd. Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor as the male singers.
The story of the film was….
Nirmal Kumar (Pradeep Kumar) who is doing his final year of Engineering in a college in Mumbai, stays in a building as a tenant with his male servant Pedro (Dhumal). In the same building another tenant, Mala (Mala Sinha), a stage actress and dancer, has taken a flat opposite Nirmal Kumar’s flat and stays with her maid servant, Mary (Tuntun). Both of them often meet, mostly under hostile situations. Apparently, both Pedro and Mary also meet in similar situations.
One night, Mala has a stage dance show in which Nirmal goes to watch it on a complimentary ticket. During the stage show, the fire engulfs the stage in which Mala is caught. While the audience hurriedly leaves the show, Nirmal runs through the fire and saves Mala. But he himself gets injured due to artificial pillars of the stage falling on him. He is hospitalised with fractured bones. Mala takes care of him during his hospitalisation. They fall in love with each other and get married in a temple. After the marriage, Nirmal and Mala stay in his house with Pedro and Mary. Mala has some apprehension as to how Nirmal’s parents will react to their sudden marriage. Nirmal assures her that his family members – father, Ishwardas (Nazir Hussain) , his mother (Leela Mishra), his younger brother, Anil (Jawahar Kaul) and younger sister, Usha (Baby Naaz) will welcome her with open arms.
In his native place, Nirmal’s father, Ishwardas has fixed his marriage with Shobha (Shubha Khote), the daughter of the wealthy Diwan Chamanlal (Narbada Shankar) and has sent a telegram to him to come home urgently without mentioning his marriage. Nirmal is happy that he gets an opportunity to take Mala with him and to formally introduce her to his family. Both of them travel to their native place. Contrary to his expectation, Ishwardas is enraged by Nirmal’s marriage with Mala without his approval. He humiliates Mala being a low dancing girl. Nirmal defends her which further infuriates Ishwardas. He orders him to get out of the house forthwith. Nirmal’s mother tries to defend the son and in her attempt to stop him from leaving the house, she falls down and dies. Even during this moment, Ishwardas blames Mala who has brought ill-omen to the family. After some time, Ishwardas gets his younger son, Anil married to Shobha to keep his promise to Diwan Chamanlal albeit partially.
Nirmal and Mala return to Mumbai when they find their respective maid, Pedro and Mary have already got married. After his engineering graduation, Nirmal gets a job. Mala is blessed with a baby boy. Life goes on smoothly for Mala and Nirmal. But for Ishwardas, life is not the same after the death of his wife. With the arrival of Shobha as his daughter-in-law in his house, life has become more troublesome. Shobha is a short-tempered woman and is a spendthrift. She is not interested in having children.
Years pass on with no communication between Nirmal and his father Ishwardas. Nirmal has got promotion in his job while his younger brother Anil, becomes jobless when their Mill goes into liquidation. Debtors line up in front of Ishwardas’s residence, while his daughter-in-law, Shobha continues with her reckless spending. Even the house in which they are staying is being auctioned to meet debt obligations. Anil comes to Mumbai with Shobha in search of a job while Ishwardas and his younger daughter, Usha roam on the street. One day, while traveling in the car, Mala notices an old man lying on the road almost unconscious and a small girl is sitting beside him. She takes him to her outhouse to tend him. The old man is Ishwardas, and the girl is Usha. Neither of them has recognised each other as after marriage when Mala had visited, she was in pardah.
Meanwhile, Shobha goes to a jewelry shop and sells her mangalsutra to raise money. In the same shop, Mala meets her classmate in college. She invites Shobha with her husband for dinner in her house. Again, both are not able to relate to each other as there was a complete disconnect with the family for years and Nirmal was out of Mumbai for office work. Since it was late at night, Mala advises Shobha and her husband to stay for the night in her house.
In the night, Shobha steals some jewelry and valuable items from the cupboard. Her husband, Anil sees and pleads with her not to do such a thing. She ignores him and runs towards the exit when the dog starts barking, Anil snatches the bag with stolen items and runs towards the road when the dog is chasing him. The shouts of the thief resound in the house. Ishwardas runs from the outhouse and catches Anil. Seeing him, Ishwardas snatches the jewelry bag from Anil’s hand so that Anil is not caught and the blame for theft falls on him. At that moment, Nirmal returns from his tour and gets feedback from Mala about the old man. Nirmal orders Pedro to handover the old man to the police. Shobha, out of guilt, reveals that she had done the theft, and her father-in-law is innocent. At that time, Nirmal recognises his father, Anil and Usha. They unite, forgetting what has happened in the past.

You will see the name Ranjana Shukla in the cast. Now, hardly anyone knows about this actress who had worked as a heroine with Dilip Kumar also in his early career. One can not get any information about her in any book or on the internet. Here is some information about her, for our readers.
Ranjana’s real name was Ratan Shantaram Deshpande. She was born in Nagpur on 20-10-1927. While studying in St. Ursula High School, she learnt dancing and music from well known ustads. After passing her 6th standard examination, she came to Bombay to her elder sister, Kusum Deshpande, who was already working as an actress with Minerva Movietone films. Kusum married Vasant Thengadi, a handsome actor in Hindi films of those times.
Kusum arranged for specialised dancing for Ratan in the holidays. Later Ratan was taken to Vijay Bhatt of Prakash pictures for an interview. She was immediately selected and got a role in the famous film Ram Rajya (1943). In this film she was Chitralekha, Sita’s sakhi. Vijay Bhatt also changed her name to Ranjana. She was in the payroll of Prakash for Rs. 2000 pm. She acted in films like ‘Police’ (1944), ‘Vikramaditya’ (1945), ‘Hamara Sansar’ (1945), ‘Nai Maa’ (`1946), ‘Zameen Asmaan’ (1946), ‘Mahasati Vrinda Tulsi’ (1947) etc.
Ranjana was invited by Bombay Talkies to do the heroine’s role opposite Dilip Kumar in the film ‘Milan’ (1946). This film was based on Bangla novel ‘Nauka Doobi’ written by Rabindranath Tagore. She played the role of Hem Nalini in this film’s Hindi version. The same role was done by Meera Sircar in the Bangla film ‘Nauka Doobi’.
After this film, Ranjana was in great demand, but she wanted to quit films and get married to live a simple life. She married a young and handsome writer, Arvind Shukla. But after a few months he fell sick and there was no income. After the death of her first husband, Ranjana, it seems, married one Patwardhan in 1954.
She continued working in films till 1975. She also worked in many Marathi films. In all, she worked in about 35 Hindi films or so. Ranjana worked with many big stars of her times like, Prem Adeeb, Prithviraj Kapoor, Jairaj, Dilip Kumar, Jeevan, Umakant etc.
It is interesting to note that her sister and her brother in law acted with her in a few films. Some such films were ‘Zameen Asmaan’ (1946), and ‘Shaadi Se Pehle’ (1947). In the film ‘Saajan Ka Ghar’ (1948) all three had worked together.
We have many families like this in Hindi films. I remember Zubeida and her mother and sisters, Sitara Devi and her 2 sisters, Nargis, her mother and brothers, Kapoor family, Dilip Kumar, his brother and sister in law, and many other film couples and families of several film people. Ranjana was perhaps one early example.
After her return to films, Ranjana started using her name as Ranjana Shukla, because now there was another Ranjana named actress in Hindi films at the same time. This other Ranjana (Deshmukh), though worked in only 6 Hindi films, it was enough to cause a “Same Name Confusion” and a mix up of filmography.
Today’s song is the last and final song from this film to feature here. There were 8 songs in the films including a two-part song (no. 1 and 2 in HFGK). This 2-part song was covered in the Blog on 19-5-2020 (by Avinash ji). However, it was not counted in the count of covered songs, in the Blog’s list of Moviewise Songs, by oversight which showed only 6/8, while in reality it was 7/8. I realized it when I checked all the songs (as per my regular practice) before selecting today’s song.
So, with today’s song, all songs of this film are covered and the film gets YIPPEED !
The song is sung by Asha Bhosle and chorus. Enjoy….

ओ ओ ओ
