‘Pinjre Ke Panchhi’ (1966) was produced by MC Anantraj and was directed by Salil Chaudhary who also wrote the story and the screenplay besides being the music director for the film. The cast included Balraj Sahni, Meena Kumari, Mehmood, Poonam (Persis Khambata), Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Iftekhar, Padma Devi, Yunus Parvez, Nazir Kashmiri, Abhi Bhattacharya, Shaukat Azmi, Radheshyam etc. This is the only Hindi film, Salil Chaudhary has directed.
On the mahurat day of the film on March 5, 1964, a serious incident happened which changed the course of Meena Kumari’s personal life. When Meena Kumari arrived in the studio and was walking toward her make-up room, the hairdresser informed her that Baqar Ali, Kamal Amrohi’s assistant has instructed her not to allow anyone to enter her make-up room. Meena Kumari was furious. To defy his order, she invited Gulzar, the dialogue writer for the film, to accompany her to the make room. At this point there was heated arguments between her and Baqar Ali during which he has supposed to have told her that he was doing as per the instructions given by Kamal Amrohi. At this stage, Meena Kumari supposedly told Baqar Ali to tell Kamal Sahab that she will not be returning to his house. She kept her words and never returned to Kamal Amrohi’s house. The story of the film is as under:
Two undertrials, Yaseen Khan (Balraj Sahni), a murder convict and Lalu (Mehmood), a thief, escape from the police van when they are being taken to the jail. On the way, they loot a suitcase from a house and continue their escape. They reach at the gate of the bungalow in the vicinity. Being empty, they decide to spend night in the bungalow and to depart the next day. They remove their prison dress and put on new ones they found in the suitcase.
Soon, the owner of the bungalow (Asit Sen) makes a visit to his bungalow to get it cleaned before the new tenant arrives. Assuming Lalu in the bungalow to be his new tenant, Sonu Sharma (Abhi Bhattacharya), Lalu introduces Yaseen Khan as his uncle. The owner leaves by saying that he lives in a nearby room.
Parallelly, somewhere else, Heena (Meena Kumari), a nurse has fallen in love with a businessman, Sonu Sharma (Abhi Bhattacharya) while taking care of him in the hospital. After discharge from the hospital, Sonu Sharma gets married to Heena in a temple. They stay in a hotel for three months. One day, Sonu leaves the hotel with a note to Heena that she should to shift to a bungalow which he has taken on lease in a small town. He will be back with her in the bungalow after completing his work. Heena arrives at the bungalow when she is received by Lalu introducing himself as Sonu’s brother and Yaseen as his uncle.
Assuming that Heena is wealthy, Yaseen decides to kill her and decamp with her valuables. However, on a strong objection from Lalu, Yaseen abandons his plan. They both decides to leave the bungalow next morning before her husband, Sonu Sharma arrives at the bungalow. But due to injuries to his leg while escaping from the police van, Yaseen is not able to walk properly as his injured leg has swollen. Being a nurse, Heena takes care of Yaseen’s injuries. Gradually, she takes care of the kitchen. Heena is now worried as Sonu has not yet arrived as promised by him. Lalu assures her that he will definitely come. In the back of his mind, Lalu thinks that Sonu has deceived a simpleton Heena.
One day, the bungalow owner comes and reveals that he has received a telegram that Sonu Sharma has delayed his arrival by 15 days.. He says that the police are asking the information of all the tenants who have recently shifted to the house. He questions Lalu as to who he is. Before, things could go out of control, Heena joins them and reprimands bungalow owner for unnecessarily troubling him as he is her brother-in-law.
In the meanwhile, Sonu Sharma’s mother (Padma Devi) observes her son to be distressed. On enquiring, Sonu only tells her to wait for a couple of days after which he will let her know the reason. It turns out that Sonu was worried about his medical reports suspecting him to be potential cancer patient. Hence, he has also kept away from Heena until he gets the report of his final diagnosis.
Yaseen is bent upon leaving the bungalow and Lalu is reluctant to leave as he has developed affinity towards Heena. But he has no alternative but to accompany Yaseen for fear of getting exposed without him. Both of them leave the bungalow and reach a railway station. They wait for the train in the waiting room. To their bad luck, they get recognised as thieves by a person on the basis of the dresses they have put on from the suitcase which they had stolen after escaping from the police van. They run away back to the bungalow as a safe heaven.
Upon return to the bungalow, Yaseen and Lalu find Heena is being attended to by a doctor because she had fainted in the morning and the bungalow owner has called the doctor. The doctor informs them that Heena is pregnant and she requires complete bed rest for few days. They tend Heena to their best ability but she needs hospitalisation for better care. Yaseen suggests a way out by pointing out that the police have declared a reward for providing information about Yaseen. He would request his friend Keshto to provide the whereabouts of him so that with the reward money, Heena can be admitted to hospital for recuperation.
In the meanwhile, Heena gets her hand on a letter written by Sonu that he has been suffering from some disease which the doctor has not so far diagnosed and he is afraid, he is living on a borrowed time. He is worried as to who will look after her as he has no father and brother. He suggests her to remarry. The letter gives a shock wave to Heena. Lalu has to reveal the truth that both are criminals escaped from the police van. She tells him to leave the house at once.
On the other hand, Yaseen is forced to return to the bungalow to be away from the police search as Keshto mishandles the operations to collect the reward as he picked up a wrong person. On his return, Yaseen finds Heena missing from the bungalow. After a search, he finds her walking on a railway trek with the intention of committing suicide. He saves Heena from the incoming train and brings her back to the bungalow. He also gets to know about the letter as well as their true identity which has forced Heena to take the extreme step. He leaves Heena in the care of Lalu and decides to search for Sonu on the basis of the address on the letter.
Meanwhile, Sonu gets a favourable medical report which rules out cancer. A happy Sonu starts from his house to join Heena to convey her the good news. On the way, Sonu is kidnapped by Yaseen to bring him to Heena not aware that Sonu himself was traveling in his car to join Heena. Sonu finds Heena unconscious and he assumes that it is the handiwork of Yaseen and Lalu. He at once goes to the police station to inform them about the criminals.
When Sonu is out of the bungalow, Yaseen and Lalu arrive at the bungalow to take unconscious Heena to the hospital by carrying her on Yaseen’s back. On the way, a police team along with Sonu trace the whereabout of Yaseen who has taken a break to rest. A police shoots at him resulting in a serious injuries to him. Heena who has come out of her unconsciousness tells police that she does not know who they are but definitely they are the one who had taken care of her during the absence of her husband. She further reveals that Yaseen, in fact, decided to surrender to the police so that the informer will get reward money which will help them to admit Heena to the hospital.
A seriously injured Yaseen unites Heena with Sonu before he dies. Lalu is arrested and is taken to the police station during which he recalls Yaseen’s advice to give up pickpocketing. He will have to undergo his short stint in the jail after which he will get an opportunity to spend rest of his life as a honest, clean and a good human being which he is.
In the film, Mehmood had a subdued role of a kind person and had an equal footage with Balraj Sahni and Meena Kumari. The film has a good story plot which the director failed to present in a fast-paced narrative. The film’s momentum faced the ‘speed breaks’ from unnecessary comedy sub-plot of Keshto Mukherjee. Also, the role of Harindranath Chattopadhyay and Persis Khambata as father and daughter, respectively owning a hotel was superfluous which appears to have been created to add an item number dance song.
The film had five songs written by Shailendra (4) and Gulzar (1) which were set to music by Salil Chaudhary. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, “Jhoom Le Ae Matwaale Dil” rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Poonam (Persis Khambata). One can also sees the glimpses of Edwina dancing with a male companion.
The context of the song is that the police is after Lalu (Mehmood) who has escaped along with Yaseen (Balraj Sahni) from the police van and had taken shelter in a bungalow posing as the brother and uncle of Sonu (Abhi Bhattacharya), Heena’s (Meena Kumari’s) husband. Now the police has identified them as the escapees on the run. On the way, Lalu enters a hotel where the dance number is in progress and he becomes one of dancers. Amy (Persis Khambata) has no problem with Lalu as they had earlier met at a railway waiting room when she had invited Lalu to visit their hotel.
This song is akin to an item number in which the performance of Persis Khambata as a singer-dancer appears unimpressive to me. However, song turns out to be peppy.
