Today’s song is the last and final song of the social film Sitara-1955.
In India, from the time, when the first Cinema making started,especially after the Talkie films started, there was a new destination for the ambitious boys and girls to join it and become big stars. In those years any child of 10 to 20 years of age that ran away from the home, was sure to reach Bombay to try his/her luck. There are many such cases Most of such adventures failed and there are extremely few cases where the “Run-Aways’ made it to success. I know such cases, from Music Director Jaidev running away to Bombay in 1933 to actor Chandrashekhar-a Barber’s son from Hyderabad. Jaidev finally made it and he was the only Musician to win 3 National Music Awards for his films and actor Chandrashekhar became a well known hero and in later years president of Actors’ Association for many years.
It is not only the ‘Runaways’, who aspired to become big, but many singers in the chorus and small time actors in the mob scenes of films too had such desires. Today’s film is based on such a story where an ordinary girl in films-working as an extra- aspired to become a big star. (after Bhagwan Dada’s hit film Albela-1951, such films came in hordes !) Such stories are good to watch on screen with their happy endings, but real life is not so kind to all !
Today’s film was made by All India Pictures, Bombay, owned by Producer P.N.Arora ( he is the same who supported Helen and later robbed her in her senior age). The film was directed by S.K.Oza. This name is not very well known.
Shubh Karan Oza, who was born on 16-10-1921, at Hathras-U.P. He was educated in Kanpur. He joined films in 1939 as an assistant to Kidar Sharma,in Film Corporation of India Ltd. Same year he acted in the film Dil hi to hai-1939, for which Kidar Sharma was the director. Oza got his first film as director with the film Doli-1947. Next came Nai Raat-48, Aadhi Raat-50, Hulchal-51 and Sitara-55. He started his own production company and made Naaz-54. He was the first director to go to Ceylon to direct a Simhalese film “Divya Yoga”in 1958. He wrote stories of films like Mastana -54 and Upasana-71. He was the Executive production manager for the film Agni Rekha-73. In his career, Oza had the opportunity to work with Big stars like Dilip Kumar, Nargis,Ashok Kumar etc. He directed only 6 Hindi films and wrote stories of 3 films. Sitara-1955 was the last Hindi film he directed. Shubh Karan oza died in Bombay on 4-10-1980. (Thanks to Late Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji for this information.)
The Music Director was Ghulam Mohammed and the 8 songs were written by Shakeel Badayuni. The cast of the film included big names like Vyjayantimala, Pradeep Kumar, Om Prakash, Shashikala, Jayant, Begum Para, Gope, Ram Avatar, Shyam Kumar, Amar, Badri Prashad, Helen, Pratima devi and others.
The decade of 1950 was full of musical films and many songs became evergreen, remembered even today. The stories were selectively good due to competition and films were handled by expert directors. In such a situation, films like Sitara-1955 could neither shine nor compete with other films.
The year 1955 gave us some really meaningful and entertaining films. Raj Kapoor’s ‘Shri 420’ tried to bring in limelight, as usual, the hypocrisy of elite society. It was a great film with a message, good direction and everlasting music by Shankar-Jaikishan, the three specialities of an RK film. From this film onwards, “Raju” became the favourite name of Raj Kapoor’s Heroes.( Like ‘Shanker’ was Shammi Kapoor’s lucky name in early films. Similarly ‘Vijay’ was the favourite film name of Amitabh Bachhan in 20 films, of Jeetendra in 18 films and of Mithun Chakravarti in 16 films.).
Guru Dutt’s film Mr.and Mrs.55 was perhaps his last light comedy movie, which has peppy music by O P Nayyar. Later he made serious films like Pyaasa-57, Kagaz ke phool-59 and Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam-62, for which he will be known forever. Sunil Dutt made his Debut with Railway Platform. V.Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje was an example of how an art film devoted to Dance can also become a commercial success. The film being in color also helped. Seema and Devdas were serious films. Pather Panchali hit the Indian screens. Azaad, Insaniyat, Munimji, Udan Khatola and Baradari were entertainers with very good music.
Children’s film society was established in 1955. Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali got married. New Theatres of Calcutta made its last film Bakul and downed its shutters forever.
The story of the film Sitara-1955 was …..
Sitara is a 1955 Hindi-language emotional-romantic musical thriller family drama directed by S.K. Ojha.
The story follows Kamla, a sweet and simple girl working as a background extra in the film industry. She harbors deep dreams of becoming a superstar, but her harsh, impoverished living conditions continuously hold her back. A hardworking man named Makkhan falls deeply in love with Kamla and genuinely wants to support her journey toward achieving her stardom.
The narrative takes a sharp turn when cruel landlords evict Kamla for non-payment of rent, rendering her homeless. To make matters worse, a predatory neighbour named Shambhu targets her vulnerability and pursues her through lonely dark streets. In a desperate bid to escape him and save her honor, Kamla runs into the path of an oncoming limousine. She pretends to be hurt by the car to secure refuge from her pursuer.
This incident completely changes her fortune. The limousine belongs to Rai Bahadur Seth Kalidas, an incredibly wealthy but hard-of-hearing gentleman. By a stroke of luck and coincidence, Kamla gets the opportunity to pose as Ragini, the wealthy man’s long-lost daughter. Leaving her life as a poor extra behind, she seamlessly adopts this new persona and begins leading a lavish, upper-class lifestyle.
However, as Kamla climbs the social ladder and gets closer to her dreams of stardom, she ends up forgetting Makkhan, the man who loved her—a choice that eventually triggers severe consequences for her. The plot thickens further when Kundan, Ragini’s actual childhood playmate, arrives on the scene. Kamla continues to play her deceptive role until she realizes that Kundan is truly the man of her dreams, setting up the film’s emotional climax.
One of the cast members was Om Prakash. Omprakash was mainly a comedian, but he had been a hero,a villain and a character artiste too. Of course the major part of his career is as a Comedian. He was one of the most respected artistes of his generation, in the industry. For some time he floated a Film production company in collaboration with his close friend C. Ramchandra. When their films flopped, he simply dissolved the company and later produced films on his own and he directed them too. When his film Jahan Ara-64 flopped miserably, giving him a heavy monetary loss, he stopped producing films.
Omprakash was a lover of life, joy, jokes, playing cards and he was the happiest, when among his friends. Not many people know that the famous producer Pachhi ( Around the world etc) was his younger brother. Omprakash’s first film was ‘Guru Ghantal’-37 where he worked uncredited. He next did a small role in Bombay Talkies film ‘Anjaan’-41, but his career started when Pancholi got him a role in film ‘Daasi’-44. He earned Rs 80 for this film.
Omprakash worked in 293 films and directed 4 films namely, Duniya Gol hai-55, Gateway of India-57, Kanhaiya-59 and Chacha Zindabad-59, all produced by him alone. There were some films like Annadata-72, buddha mil gaya-71, Charandas-77 etc made keeping him as a central character. He sang 6 songs in 5 films- Meena Bazar-50, Ladki-53, Bindiya-60,Vardaan-74, and Ghar ki Izzat-94. HFGK mentions his name as a Lyricist for a song in film Dost-54.
OMPRAKASH BAKSHI was born on 19-12-1919 at Lahore. At the age of 12 ,he started learning classical music. In 1937,he joined A.I. Radio on a salary of Rs.25 pm.
He took the pen name of ‘FATEH DIN’. He presented entertaining programmes. He was very popular in Punjab and Lahore, during that period. In private parties he was a centre of attraction. In one such Party, where he was regaling his audience, he was noticed by Dalsukh Pancholi and he offered Omprakash a role in DAASI-1944.Then came Dhamki-45 and Aayee Bahaar-46. In Shehar se door-46, he was a co Hero with Al Nasir and later in Ghungroo-52 he was the Hero opposite Sumitra Devi.
Just when he was settling in films, partition took place and he landed in Bombay. His first film in Bombay was Lakhpati-48 and then there was no looking back. He acted as Villain in Naach, Nirdosh, Baghi Sipahi etc. He was a good actor and played a variety of roles. In many films he was shown as a Pehelwan. In Pehli Jhalak, his bout with Dara Singh became the film’s attraction. Even in Chameli ki Shaadi, he was a pehelwan.
There were many films made with him as a central character like, Annadaata, Dus lakh, Sadhu aur shaitan. Dil Duniya Daulat -72 was a remake of Pugree-48 in which he did the role which was done by comedian Ghori in Pugree.
C.Ramchandra was his best friend. They together produced Duniya gol hai, Jhanjhar and Lakeeren. The trailer of Duniya Gol hai was more interesting than the film. In this trailer, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Ashok kumar come on the screen one after another and say-I have directed this film, so you must see it. Lastly Omprakash comes on screen and says,” Ye sab pagal hai. Picture to maine direct kee hai”. Anyway all the 3 films flopped despite good music. Later Omprakash alone produced films like Gateway of India, Chacha Zindabad, Sanjog and Jahan Ara. After Jahan Ara’s colossal losses he stopped producing films and converted his office into a Card Game centre for friends.
He lived in Union Park, Chembur, a suburb of Mumbai. He died at age 78 in Mumbai, India of a heart attack. The actor who was always so full of life was still full of life till just two days before his death. He knew he was not well. He knew he was suffering from various complications but he never gave up his zest for life till his heart betrayed him. He kept calling friends to play a game of Rummy or just chat. He had an office at the Roop Tara Studios which was only used for “Rummy sessions” and “chat sessions”. Then, some years ago, he shifted his office to the suburbs to make it more convenient for his friends. He attended this office regularly till his health started failing him. He was confined to his bungalow (next to Ashok Kumar’s bungalow). He suffered his first heart attack in his own bedroom. He was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital where he suffered a second heart attack and went into a coma from which he never came out. He was declared dead at 1.30 pm on February 21, 1998. The news spread fast and the industry was shocked and stunned because he was the kind of man who could not be easily associated with something so sombre and solemn like death.
Film Duniya Gol Hai-55 had a star cast of Karan Dewan, Anita Guha, Kuldeep Kaur, Sunder, Omprakash etc. Since this was his First film as a Director, as many as 13 actors worked in the film as “Guest Artistes” ! He was so popular that he had to say No to some more actors ready and eager to work as Guest Artistes in this film. Till this film, it was a sort of record.
