This was the last post in the series.
Every day I find myself humming one song or the other of ARR’s compositions. It is only in the last decade or so ARR has started to compose songs for films made in Hindi only. For more than two decades, the maestro was focused more on Tamil/telegu and some time Malayalam film industry and composing music for them. Some of these movies were made in hindi also simultaneously. But most were made in Tamil/Telegu and dubbed for the hindi version.
Despite this fact, the impact of ARR brand is evident all around.
Recently I head this song “Jaise tu hai paas mere, tere paas main” by Deepali Sahay, in her interview on youtube. It came to light that it is composed by ARR for the movie “Main waapas aaunga”. This is a new movie directed by Imtiaz Ali. I have heard of him, not seen many movies by him. I can recall “Jab we met”, ‘Rockstar” and maybe parts of ‘Udta Punjab” which I have seen. Yeah these were diverse topics and stories.
I had heard of “Main Waapas aaunga”, from my sister, who commented that maybe we should see this movie. This was her attempt to try to distract me from some issues. I said “you are talking about Imtiaz Ali’s film?”, I also tried to distract her from this intense story (My guess) by saying “We should all watch Dil Chahta Hai on Sunday”.
Neither watching happened. I still want to see “Dil Chahta hai” on a Sunday soon. Or I will fall back on the binge watching I used to do during the pandemic of Turkish tele series Ertugurul Ghazi, and its sequel which I have not seen. They were with English subtitles, were engaging to the mind. Here is the Title musicfor a sample 😊.
Coming back to “main Waapas aaunga” and the song “Tere paas main”, I found the full song audio /video and gave it my full attention. Sounded familiar, as if it is a well known and well heard and loved song. Maybe it has a rendering quality, which is reaches the bottom of the heart. I thought it sounded similar to Agar tum saathh ho. Then saw part of a show where audience are asking the same question to Imtiaz Ali, whether this was earlier composed for “Tamasha” and replaced with ‘Agar tum saathh ho”. He denied the story and said this was written and composed for “Main Waapas Aungaa”.
Familiar or not, this melodious song by ARR and especially the rendition by the newcomer Deepali Sahay is in a class of those slow /emotional songs category. And it holds its own in the face of all that has gone by in 35 years of ARR’s music.
This will hold for decades to come, and this is what we as Indians have to offer to the world, our cultural wealth, in the watery canvas of such tunes, words and voices and the subtle tones of music.
We have seen only this weekend, how a tune on the piano, reminds a South Asian Head of State, of a ‘bhooli bisri yaad” for those songs are not his language. He went from “wo mere dost tum hi the, tumhi to the” of “Sangam” to effortlessly grab the rhythm of ‘Khwaab ho tum ya koyi haqueeqat” from “Teen deviyan”. This was at the state dinner in Delhi for the ‘Heads of State” participating in BRICS Summit.
The video clip of Anwar Ibrahim singing and enjoying the songs with other officials, standing next to the piano went viral within minutes, and song was trending on our blog too. The world is this small and this simple. We humans have made it so complicated, so harsh, so dramatic and so much stressful.
Geo-politics is a big game of chess, despite the bull (in a china shop). So let the players play it, check and mate. Our region has seen much of the dividing lines and the drawing on the maps, by people who hadn’t ever set foot here.
The story of the movie “Main Waapas aaunga”(2026) is also of such a dividing line, dividing lives and emotions.
Main Vaapas Aaunga (meaning “I will return”) is a 2026 Hindi romantic drama film directed by Imtiaz Ali that explores an unfinished love story and generational trauma stemming from the 1947 Partition of India.
I don’t think, I want to watch this movie, talking of the guilt of a 95 year old man, on his death bed. I could even judge him for conveniently forgetting the matter and only his sub-conscious self seeks repentance.

This ‘Nazm’ is written by Irshad Kaamil. There are 2 version in the soundtrack, female version is rendered by Deepali Sahay, and male version is by Vipin Aneja, both are making their debut in the blog. The female version is also from the male perspective, as the poet refers to himself.
