oday’s song is the last and final song from a film which no one remembers now. The film is Daraar-1972.

The film had a poor story, without a specific end- neither a Tragedy nor a happy ending-. It was directed by a person who had no earlier experience of direction. The cast was inexperienced and weak in acting. The music was outdated, lustreless and ordinary. Such a film could not, naturally, be a memorable film. The hero was ordinary, the heroine was ” one film wonder” and the supporting cast was not worthwhile.

Out of all that the film had, one good thing was its music Director- Sudhir Phadke. Unfortunately this was his last Hindi film, that too after a long gap and he was no more fit for the times prevailing.

First take a look at the film’s story, which had a background of the Indo-Pak war of 1971….

In a village close to the Pakistani border, Baldev Khosa and Rohini fall in love. After a brief courtship, their love blossoms into a marriage. They happily live their married life. Rohini gets pregnant and a mood of celebrations starts in the family. When Rohini is in the advanced stage of her pregnancy, the Indo-Pak border skirmishes start which turns into a full-fledged war. The villagers can hear the sound of mortar firing, some of which lands in the village. There is an exodus of the villagers to move away to far off places from the border as they hear the sound of tanks coming from the Pakistani side.

Rohini starts getting labour pain. Due to exodus, Baldev Khosa is not able to get a Dai to attend to the delivery of Rohini. She cannot withstand her increasing labour pain as the cross-border firings increase. Baldev Khosa is caught between saving his life and Rohini’s life. He tells Rohini that he would leave the village carrying her on his back. But she is in so much pain that she decides to stay in the house and leave her fate to the Almighty. She tells her husband to leave her alone and save his life by leaving the village. But he is still in two minds – to leave Rohini alone in such a situation or not.

The increased mortar shelling and the sound of tanks coming from the Pakistani side forces Baldev Khosa to leave the house and run away along with other villagers to a safer place leaving Rohini alone. After a few days, when the shelling stops, Baldev Khosa walks back to his village and hears infant’s crying inside his house. Baldev goes inside the house to find Rohini in good shape with the infant. He comes to know that the Indian Army had pushed back the intruding Pakistani army. But the situation at the border is still tense. Baldev Khosa and his wife with the infant, leave the village. But their married life is not as it was before. The film ends with a narrator telling that there is a ‘daraar’ (crack) in their relationship. (Thanks to Sadanand Kamath ji).

This coloured film had the cast of Balraj Khosa, Rohini, Birbal, Radha Rani and a very long list of unknown and new artistes. The film was directed by Ved Rahi and the music Director was Sudhir Phadke- with an excellent history and a good name.

The Music Director Sudhir Phadke may not have been a notable composer in Hindi films, but he was a big gun in Marathi cinema. Sudhir Phadke ( July 25, 1919 – July 29, 2002) was an accomplished Marathi singer-composer. He was regarded as an icon of the Marathi film industry and Marathi Sugam Sangeet i.e. Bhavgeet (light music) for five decades. Apart from Marathi, Phadke sang and composed songs in several Hindi films as well. Phadke was affectionately known as Babuji (an honorary title given to respected gentlemen in India).

Sudhir Phadke was born in Kolhapur on July 25, 1919. His birth name was Ram Phadke, but he later changed his name to ‘Sudhir’ when he composed a song for HMV because he thought ‘Sudhir Phadke’ sounded more ‘weighty’. Phadke acquired his primary tutelage in vocal classical music from the late Vamanrao Padhye in Kolhapur. After beginning his career with HMV in 1941, he joined the Prabhat Film Company as music director in 1946. During his long career, he composed for many Marathi and Hindi films. He was also an immaculate playback singer. Phadke married his fellow singer Lalita Deulkar. Their son Shridhar Phadke (born 1951) is also a composer and singer.

Geet Ramayana, based on poet G D Madgulkar’s verses, is one of Phadke’s most popular works. The programme ran on All India Radio for a year, 1954-55. Stage performances of the program continue to draw huge crowds even today. Phadke set to music all 56 songs, and they were sung by different singers for radio (Manik Verma, Lata Mangeshkar, Phadke himself, Vasantrao Deshpande etc). All 56 songs were also recorded in Phadke’s own voice.
In the last days of his life, Phadke was involved in producing a Hindi film on the life of the Indian freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The movie Veer Savarkar was funded by public donations. Sudhir Phadke last sang and composed music for this movie.

Phadke was connected with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for over 60 years. He was the main inspiration and founder member of India Heritage Foundation in the United States.

Sudhir Phadke gave music to 19 Hindi films from 1946 (Rukmini Swayamvar) to 1972 (Daraar). His famous film is Pehli Tarikh -54, in which he had composed the famous Kishore Kumar song- Din hai suhana aaj pehli tarikh hai. He also sang 14 songs in 9 Hindi films. A noteworthy fact about Sudhir Phadke is that during his peak period in Marathi films, he created a World Record. He teamed up with writer/poet G.D.Madgulkar (गदिमा , as he was known fondly in Maharashtra) and director Raja Paranjape. Together, as a team, they gave a total of 11 Hit films,in a row in 18 years- from 1948 to 1966 … a record for a Team. (Ack: Thanks to sudhirphadke.com, wiki and my notes)
Today’s song has 2 singers. one of them was Krishna Kalle. Krishna Kalle is well known for her playback songs in Hindi and Marathi movies, bhajans, ghazals and light songs on AIR and concerts. She has also sung lyrics in Gujarati, Punjabi, Bhojpuri and Sanskrit. Moreover, she has also given classical concerts. Vasudha Kulkarni has written a short biography of Krishna in Marathi and this article is based on the same.

Krishna was born to Sharada and Vasant Kalle on December 18, 1940 in Mumbai. She has two younger brothers Ajit and Ashok.Krishna grew up in Kanpur. She excelled in school with two double promotions as also in college. She was trained in classical music beginning with dhrupad-dhamar and lighter forms like thumri, ghazal, chaiti, kajari etc. by Pandit Rama sevak Tiwari and his brother Siyaram. She then received training in Rampur gharana from UstadAfzal Hussain Nizami. Along with her parents, who were interested in classical music, Krishna attended many music concerts. Top musicians such as Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Shanta Prasad,Vidushi Girija Devi performed in their home. She won prizes in school and college contests and was graded as a top artist in AIR.Her brothers are also well versed in music. Her aunt, Sharada’s sister Tara Kalle studied from the Khalifa of Agra Gharana, Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan and performed on AIR. Her cousin Usha Balasavar (daughter of Sharada’s sister Shashikala) is also a well known singer.

In 1959 Krishna graduated with honours. She married Marutirao Idgunji, a family friend and a lover of music. The couple lived next to Krishna’s parents and Krishna continued her studies and performed light music concerts. In 1965 they moved to Mumbai and Krishna entered into the main stream of light music. Her playback singing in Hindi films began in 1965 in “Danaveer Karna”. The book (by Vasudha Kulkarni) gives a complete list of her 203 songs with composers of lyrics and music, from 130 films.

Among the duets she sang are those with Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh,Hemanth Kumar, Mahendra Kapur, Vani Jairam, Suman Kalyanpur,Lakshmi Shankar and Usha Balsavar. She worked with music composers such as Datta Davjekar, O. P. Nayyar, Salil Choudhari,Shankar Jaikishan, Sudhir Phadke, C. Ramachandra and Ram Kadam.

Growing up in Kanpur, Krishna was fluent in Hindi and Urdu. In Mumbai, Ram Kadam, who was normally a music director for Marathi movies, had an assignment for a Hindi movie. Under duress, he chose Krishna and was so impressed that he chose her for his other assignments as well. Krishna mastered Marathi pronunciations on the job so well that she got many assignments in Marathi movies, bhavageet etc. under famous music directors such as Shrinivas Khale, Yashavant Dev and others who have given glowing testimonials in the book mentioned above. There is a list of 109 songs in Marathi in films and as bhavageets. Krishna’s Gujarathi songs also became hits.

As Krishna became well known as a playback singer, problems began. Other leading playback singers succeeded in depriving Krishna from rising further. In addition to this Krishna had to face a tragedy. Marutirao suddenly passed away in 1979. When playback singing dried up, Krishna restarted what she was doing in Kanpur, namely sing on AIR where she had a top grade and in private concerts.

In 1973 Krishna met Manohar Rai, an accomplished musician in Dhrupad-Dhamar as well as a music composer-cum director in a recording studio. Krishna and Manohar both composed lyrics and music and gave over a thousand concerts in both light and classical music. In 1985 the two got married. They continued their concerts until they had to stop due to health reasons. Even now music continues in their home.

Krishna Kalle died on 15-3-2015.( Thanks to the book “गायिका कृष्णा कल्ले, एक कृतार्थ गानप्रवास” – वसुधा कुलकर्णी.)

Here is the film’s last and final song, sung by Krishna Kalle and Hemlata with chorus. With this song, the film is YIPPEED.

Song- Goree kar le aaj singaar (Daraar)(1972) Singers-Krishna Kalle,Hemlata, Lyricist- Mahendra Dehalvi, MD- Sudhir Phadke

Lyrics:

goree kar le aaj singaar
saja le sapnon ka sansaar
hoke dolee pe sawaar
piya ke des jaana ho o
piya ke des jaana ho
piya ke des jaana ho
goree kar le aaj singaar
saja le sapnon ka sansaar
hoke dolee pe sawaar
piya ke des jaana ho o
piya ke des jaana ho
piya ke des jaana ho

chidiya hain ham chhoden babula ka des re
ud ke hai jaana ik din pardes re
ho lagtee hai sabko ye meethee meethee tees re
aate hee jawaanee aaye piya ka sandes ree
ho
ho kitnee hain ham sab laachaar
hoye dolee le ke chaar kahaar
khade ho jab baabul ke dwaar
chale na koi bahaana ho o
piya ke des jaana ho
piya ke des jaana ho

aansuon se dhoye kyun khushee kee tasweer ko
chaar chaand laage aaj teree taqdeer ko
koi tujhe devta manaaye koi peer ko
milta hai raaja(?) ko naseebon waalee heer ko
hoy
karte hain hum to sarkaar
hamen bhee ?? ka deedaar
ho maahee(??) kee nainyya ho paar
miley hum ko thhikaana ho o
piya ke des jaana ho
piya ke des jaana ho
goree kar le aaj singaar
saja le sapnon ka sansaar
