‘Aar Yaa Paar’ (1997) was produced and directed by Ketan Mehta. The cast included Jackie Shroff, Deepa Sahi, Ritu Shivpuri, Kamal Sidhu, Satish Shah, Harish Patel, Ajit Vachani, Ravi Khanvilkar, Manoj Pahwa. Mamik Singh, Vikas Desai etc.
In an interview on WildFilmsIndia on the eve of the release of the film, Ketan Mehta revealed that this was his fastest film in terms of conceptualization to the start of the shooting within one month. This was his first film in the genre of the psychological crime thriller. The film’s story is about a lazy but ambitious young account executive who is always in debt because of his spendthrift nature and his indulgence in women and wine. During the course of his office work, he handles a wealthy spinster’s financial portfolio. Being ambitious, he is successful in seducing her to marry with an eye on her wealth. He starts to live in a lavish life style. However, soon he develops serious affairs with his wife’s secretary. Driven by the greed of money, both of them decide to attempt a perfect murder of his wife to look like an accident. Soon, he realises that the woman with whom he has affairs is also planning to grab the entire wealth of his murdered wife. By this time, the police is able get evidence linking him to his wife’s death. He is trapped between the police investigation and his manipulative lover which results in tragedy for both.
The film’s story was inspired from the novel, ‘The Sucker Punch’ (1954) written by Raymond Marshall, one of the pen names of James Hadley Chase which itself is another of his pen name. The novel starts with first person narrative indicating as to how the story has ended for the readers. The film also starts in the same way. The film’s story in detail is as under:
The film opens with Shekhar Khosla (Jackie Shroff), sitting in a tent at a river shore recording his confession of the crime he has committed. He says that his youth was not conducive to decide good and bad things when the money became important for him in the midst of his huge debt. With this, the film’s story starts.
Shekhar Khosla works as an account executive in an office where he is friendly with his fellow colleagues. From the conversation with one of his colleagues, it becomes apparent that Shekhar is in large debt because of his spendthrift nature especially on women and wine. His boss, Malhotra (Vikas Desai) calls Shekhar to his cabin and reprimands him for whiling away his time in the office. As a last chance, he gives him an assignment to handle Rs.400 crore wealth management account of Veena (Kamal Sidhu) a spinster whose expectations are difficult to meet. If he fails, his services will be terminated. His colleagues in the office who had handled her account in the past cautions him that she is a difficult client with unpredictable behaviour. But he says that he is an expert in handling women. True to his happy go lucky nature, Shekhar, without worrying about his new assignment, goes to a night club and watches the dance by Julie (Ritu Shivpuri) with whom he develops one more casual affairs.
Next day, Shekhar visits Veena’s palatial house and meets her secretary Anu Chauhan (Deepa Sahi) who asks him to wait as her boss is in very bad mood. Shekhar sends a chit to Veena that he works in the office and his time is precious. Veena calls him immediately and talks to him in a very rude manner. However, without reacting to her behaviour, Shekhar comes to the business matter in which he points out to her that presently she had some tax problems and she has problems with lessees in vacating her big flat. He assures her that he would solve these issues.
Within few days of his taking over Veena’s wealth management, Shekhar successfully solves her outstanding problems. He invest her money in share market which makes her a handsome profits. In all his deals, he gets his cuts from the opposite parties including brokers which he reveals to Veena by saying that she is not losing her money but he takes cut from those who are making profit from her money.
Over a period of time, his charming behaviour and transparent dealings impress Veena. Slowly, their client relationship turns into a friendship. They go for wrestling match and spends time together on the beach. In between, he meets Julie who suggests him that with so much wealth with Veena, he should think of marrying her so that he becomes the equal partner in her wealth. Being ambitious and greedy about money, Shekhar dreams of marrying her to live a lavish life and also an eye over her wealth. Shekhar is successful in seducing Veena who herself proposes the marriage. Within short period, they get married and departs for honeymoon in Italy.
During honeymoon, the differences in their temperament and interest create rift in their relation. Veena’s ‘blow hot and cold’ temperament affects Anu, Veena’s secretary who often becomes a scapegoat for Veena’s anger against Shekhar. Shekhar consoles Anu on each occasion which leads to their becoming closer to each other. Gradually, their relationship turns into an extra-marital relationship as the Shekhar’s post-married life faces temperamental hurdles. After the honeymoon in Italy, Shekhar and Veena with her secretary, Anu return to India.
Veena has gone on a three days trip for some function in her college. Shekhar gets opportunities to spend quality time with Anu without the fear of Veena. During one of their meetings, Anu reveals that Veena has made a Will according to which she gets Rs.50 lakhs and he as her husband would get all other properties including Rs.300 crore. Of course, he will get the money only after her death which is too far away to happen. Shekhar gives a hint to her that she can also die prematurely, say by an accident.
Veena has got suspicion that Shekhar has an affair with a girl but she does not know that the girl in question is her own secretary. In a heat of the moment, she slaps Shekhar for his adultery which he denies by telling her that he has met one of his friends. But Veena’s slap has hastened his plan to get rid of her. He takes Anu into confidence as like him she is also greedy about money. Together they plan a perfect murder of Veena with a car accident but creating all sorts of alibies so that no suspicion is cast on Shekhar.
The murder of Veena is planned on the day when she will be driving her car to attend a night party. The weather is also perfect for a murder as it has been raining heavily. When she is about to take her car, Shekhar hits very hard on her head making her unconscious. He drives the same car with unconscious Veena and put her on the driving seat. He jumps out before the car falls in a deep valley and gets burnt. He quickly returns to his house where his share broker, Jagdish (Satish Shah) has been waiting for him and Anu has told her that Shekhar is busy in his room dictating some letters after which he will meet him. This creates an alibi that Shekhar was in his house when the car accident took place.
After Veena is killed in a ‘car accident’, Shekhar returns home but finds Anu’s changed behaviour who wants to leave the house forever as their affairs will give suspicion to the police the motive for killing Veena. Next day, Police Inspector, Khan (Paresh Rawal) visits Shekhar’s house to get some information about him as well as Veena’s programme on the night of the accident. He says that Veena has herself driven the car to attend the party as he was busy with dictating some urgent letters on his tape recorder. The fact is that he has played his recorded message to wood wink Jagdish who had come to meet him in his house giving him an impression that Shekhar was in his room.
But human mistakes do happen in whatever way even when the killer thinks that a perfect murder is executed. It so happen that Julie had telephoned to Shekhar, which Anu has picked up while the recorded letters was being played in the room. Also, Inspector Khan in the investigation found that the car had traces of sands which means that it was driven on the beach while the accident had taken place on a hill cliff. He also gets the Veena’s Will which gives almost all her wealth to Anu contrary to what was revealed to Shekhar by Anu. It becomes clear to Shekhar that he has become a sucker to Anu’s manipulations leading to the killing of Veena and Anu will inherit all her wealth.
After the visit of Inspector Khan, Shekhar immediately rushes to meet Anu and convinces her that they both have been exposed and they must plan for an escape to some unknown places before they decide their final destination. They reach a river front and stay in a tent where Shekhar kills Anu and decides to get himself killed in the same way and in the same place as he has killed Veena. Before that he records his confessional statement on a tape and leaves it near the dead body of Anu. He drives his car to the cliff but being timid, at the last moment, he jumps out of the car and hold a rock in his hand hanging towards the valley. Inspector Khan, who was following his car, asks him ‘Aar Yaa Paar’ meaning whether he wants to be pulled back to surrender to the police or wants to jump in the valley. Shekhar says ‘Paar’ and loosens his grip on the rock to fall in the valley to ‘join’ his wife.
Even though the story of the film is not original, I like the film for its fast-paced narratives without ‘masala’ elements. There is not a dull moment in the film to fast forward except some of irrelevant songs. Jackie Shroff has given an excellent performance in his anti-hero role of a greedy person who loves wine and women. Deepa Sahi has a challenging role of a secretary whose character starts with a mask of a timid girl which in the course of time develops into a manipulative character. She does well in depicting her dual character creating a good suspense for the viewers. The film did not fare well on the box office. Probably, the fans of Jackie Shroff did not expect him to do anti-hero role. I am sure the current generation of film audience will critically appreciate the film.
The film had eight songs written by Indeewar (3), Maya Govind (3), Rani Malik (1) and Nitin Raikar (1) which were set to music by Viju Shah. The number of songs for a genre of crime thriller is high. I personally regard two songs picturised on Ritu Shivpuri as relevant for the film because her role is of a dancer with whom the character played by Jackie Shroff has an affair.
The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘dil diya pyaar kiya to kya bura kiya’ which is rendered by Asha Bhosle and Sudesh Bhosle for Ritu Shivpuri and Jackie Shroff, respectively.
The context of the song is that after Shekhar (Jackie Shroff) gets the assignment from his office to manage Rs.400 crores of the wealth of a spinster, Veena (Kamal Sidhu), his office colleagues caution him about the unpredictable behaviour of the client. But he says that he is expert in managing women. In the next seen, Shekhar is seen in a night club watching the dance by Julie (Ritu Shivpuri) with whom he develops one of his fresh casual affairs. Ultimately, it is her telephone call to Shekhar which punctures his perfect murder of Veena.
