‘Mr. Bechaara’ (1996) was produced by Nandu Tolani and was directed by K Bhagyaraj. The cast included Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Heera Rajgopal, Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, Avtar Gill, Mahavir Shah, Tiku Talsania, Shammi, Damini, Baby Vandana, Master Rakesh Bhanushali, Manmauji, Yasmin etc. Nagarjuna made his special appearance in the film. The film was a remake of Tamil film, ‘Veetla Visheshanga’ (1994) which was also directed by K Bhagyaraj who acted in the film in the lead role.

It is interesting to note that Sridevi has done the role of a girl suffering from amnesia in ‘Sadma’ (1983). When she regains her memories, she forgets her post-accident period. The film ends with heart-breaking situation for her caretaker, Kamal Hasan. In the film under discussion, Sridevi once again does the role of a girl suffering from amnesia due to a fall from the mountain cliff. However, when she sees her beloved with whom she was to get married, she regains memories. But there is no heartbreak for the caretaker who has posed as her husband with a child to facilitate her recovery. In the end, it is the heartbreak for her fiancé, Nagarjuna who has married her in a temple just before the accident.. Having recognised her motherly love for the child of her caregiver, the fiancé sacrifices his love for the betterment of the caregiver and his motherless child.

The story of the film in detail is as under:

Anand Verma (Anil Kapoor), a widower, having his printing business, lives with a child. One day, he finds at the seashore a girl lying unconscious. He admits her to a hospital run by Dr Dayal Anand (Anupam Kher). The girl recovers after few days but is unable to remember anything about her past and her family. Dr. Dayal has now a problem as to how to handle the girl’s case as he has to take care of her. He contacts Anand who has admitted her and convinces him to take her to his house as his wife Asha (Sridevi), the name of his late wife. This will help him to take care of his child. Anand, being a kind-hearted person reluctantly accepts Asha and takes her to his house.

Asha is firm that she does not remember having met Anand and married him. Dr Dayal comes to Anand’s rescue and tells her that she has a birthmark at a place only her husband can know of it. He even makes a photo frame of a photograph of both of them together as husband and wife to convince Asha that she is Anand’s wife and the mother of his child. Natwarlal (Shakti Kapoor) also takes advantage of Asha’s memory loss and pretends to be her father and the father-in-law of Anand. He often visits their place to pick up something or the other from the house.

Anand finds it difficult to pretend to Asha as her husband for long though she has started liking his child and lovingly takes care of him. Also, on her insistence,. Anand takes her on a holiday by selling his gold jewellery. The situation becomes out of control for him when one day Anand, in his sleep, pulls Asha toward him and hugs her thinking her to be his real wife. Before things would go out of control, Anand rushes to Dr. Dayal narrating the incidence and asks him to take back Asha. The whole conversations between Anand and Dr Dayal is heard by Asha. She comes to know that she has lost her memory and that she being the wife of Anand and the mother of his child are false.

A guilty Anand goes to her and reveals that whatever he has done was on the advice of Dr Dayal for her well-being. Now the truth is out, he requests her to pardon him and think of what has happened between them as a dream which is now broken. Asha blames Dr Anand for this situation, which is unbecoming of a doctor. He justifies his action by telling her that he has taken this bizarre decision not as a doctor but as a father of a daughter who has lost her memory and there is no one to take care of her. Under the situation, giving a discharge from the hospital would result in her wandering aimlessly. He suggests Asha to think about the situation calmly because she still does not remember her past. Thereafter she can take a decision whether she wants to continue or to end the relationship with Anand.

Asha returns to Anand’s house and decides that she will continue to live with Anand as she has started liking him and his child. But Anand is not aggregable and drags her to Dr. Dayal’s place and leave her with him. On returning, Anand meets with an accident and is admitted to Dr. Dayal’s hospital. After this incidence, Dr. Dayal convinces Anand to get married to Asha who has taken care of his child during his accident time. Anand agrees to marry Asha.

One day, Asha accidentally comes across Anand’s photograph with his late wife, Asha (Heera Rajgopal). She calls Anand and sees him standing back to her. He reminds of her fiancé Ajay (Nagarjuna) and the memories of her past slowly emerge recalling her time spent with him. Still, her past memories are hazy. In the meanwhile, Dr. Dayal fixes Anand’s marriage ceremony to be held after two days as he has to visit to see a bungalow before he takes decision to buy it.

During his visit to see a bungalow, Dr Dayal meets Ajay who shows his bungalow. In one of he rooms, Dr Dayal sees a photo frame of Ajay with Asha. Ajay tells him that she is Anita, his fiancée, who is missing after she fell from a mountain cliff. Dr. Anand gets a clue but at the same time, he does not want Anand’s marriage with Asha in jeopardy. Ajay gets a suspicion that Dr. Dayal may be having a clue about Anita going by his hesitant response. Ajay follows Dr. Dayal who has left to return to his house. However, Ajay misses Dr. Dayal’s car. On the way, Ajay meets Anand to get the address of Dr Dayal who takes him to his house. But Dr Dayal is away from his house to a temple where he has gone to make a quick marriage arrangements of Anand with Asha before Ajay finds him.

Ajay reveals Anand as to why he wants to meet Dr. Dayal giving the background. He shows Anita’s photo to Anand who gets to know that Ajay is Anita/Asha’s fiancé. He takes him to the temple where Asha and Dr. Dayal are waiting for Anand to reach and complete the marriage formalities. However, seeing Ajay, Dr. Anand hides. Asha and Ajay see each other. But Asha is still hazy about him. Anand sings the song which Ajay and Anita/Asha had rendered together during their courtship. Slowly, Anita/Asha gets her memory back and the scene goes in flashback.

Anita (Sridevi) and Ajay had gone to a temple to get married. On the way, Anita’s brother (Mahavir Shah) with his men assault Ajay as her brother is not in favour of their marriage. In the melee, Ajay gets badly injured. Mahavir and his men are after Anita to take her back. But she runs away from them and at the cliff where she has nowhere to go, she jumps from the cliff and falls down near the seashore. Police arrests the brother and Ajay is admitted in a hospital where he is under treatment for 15 days. After his discharge from the hospital, he has been searching for Anita but in vein.

Anita remembers Ajay but she is in a state of shock. Anand brings Ajay to the marriage venue and gets them ready for the marriage ceremony. When Ajay was to tie the Mangalsutra to Anita/Asha, he find her weeping looking at Anand’s child. Ajay gets up and brings Anand to tie the mangalsutra to Anita/Asha saying that her motherly love is greater than her love for him. Anand and Asha gets married and Dr, Anand is the happiest person at the marriage venue.

One of the highlights of the film is that the emotionally charged family drama is presented in a subtle comedy with the major contributions by Anupam Kher in the role of Dr. Dayal. Shakti Kapoor in the role of Natwarlal who takes advantage of Sridevi’s amnesia to pretend as her father has contributed to the situational comedy in the role of Natwarlal who has a pitiable background having lost his entire family and wealth due to an earthquake. Tiku Talsania in the role of an absent-minded Police Inspector has also contributed to the comical elements in his role.

The film had seven songs including a dual version song written by Sameer (5) and Nawab Arzoo (2) which were set to music by Anand-Milind. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘jaanam meree jaanam’ written by Nawab Arzoo. It is a double version song – a duet rendered by Alka Yagnik and Udit Kumar and the solo rendered by Kumar Sanu. Udit Narayan sings for Nagarjuna while Kumar Sanu sings for Anil Kapoor. Alka Yagnik lip-syncs for Sridevi.

The context of the duet song is that Dr. Dayal (Anupam Kher) has convinced Anand (Anil Kapoor) to get married to Asha (Sridevi) who has lost her past memory and living with Anand, pretending to be her husband with a child. One day, while Anand was standing outside his house with his back to Asha, she recalls her courtship with Ajay (Nagarjun) during which they sing the song together. When Ajay comes to know that Asha (for him Anita) is alive coincidentally through Anand, they both meet but Asha is not able to recognise Ajay. At this time, Anand sings the solo version of the song which makes Asha to recall her past memories including the circumstances leading to her memory loss.
