Today’s song is the last and final song from the ‘Criminal’ type of film – Hathkadi-1958.
The film was produced by D.S.Shah for his own banner D.S.Films, Bombay. It was directed by Sudarshan Bhatia and the music was by Naashaad.
The cast included Shakeela, Jabeen, Motilal, Sajjan, Amarnath, Leela Mishra, Narbada Shankar and many others. Guest artists were Murad, Bhudo Advani, Cuckoo and Sheila Vaz. Lyricists were Anjaan Kapoor, Indivar and Prem Dhavan. Film’s 6 songs were sung by 7 singers like, Lata, Usha, Asha,Sudha, Shamshad, Rafi and Khan Mastana.
Although the decade of the 1950’s was called “Golden Era”, not all films had memorable songs, though more than half films had them. Film Hathkadi was one of those remaining films which did not have any memorable songs and could not compete with any other music dominated film of this year. As such, Naashaad was not known to create songs which were remembered for long.
Let us take a look at the Musical scene of the year 1958….
The year 1958 was one year when we saw very good coordination among the lyricists, MDs and the singers. Perhaps, 1958 would rank among the first 3 years when maximum popular songs were created. The reason was superb coordination.
a few new entrants started their music career this year. Among them was Kalyan ji (of the K-A team) who gave his first independent film Samrat Chandragupta, in which Nirupa Roy had written her only film song ” Mujhe dekh chaand sharmaye.” Iqbal Qureshi made his first film ‘Panchayat’ as MD. He also wrote a popular song ‘Ta thaiyya karte aana’. Anand Bakshi’s Debut was with master Bhagwan’s film Bhola Aadmi. He continued for next 45 years and became the Lyricist with the highest number of songs to his credit. Mahendra Kapoor got recognition for his first Hit song ‘ Chand chhupa aur tare doobe’ from the film Sohni mahiwal.
These were the films which provided multiple hit songs – yahudi, Shararat, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Kala Pani, Solva Saal, Amardeep, Madhumati, Parvarish, phagun, Howrah Bridge, Dilli ka Thug and Adaalat. Madhumati was the best career film for Salil Chaudhari. O.P.Nayyar’s typical songs in Phagun, Howrah Bridge and Ragini were hits, but his music in Sone ki Chidiya was different. Dattaram had his second film Parvarish. Madan Mohan got excellent gazals written by Rajendra krishna in Adalat. This pair gave good songs in Jailor too.
Sahir excelled in Phir subah hogi and Sadhana. Mukesh gave playback to Dilip Kumar in Yahudi and Madhumati.
Kishore Kumar was a good and popular singer, but got a playback from Rafi in the film shararat. Kishore had playback for 21 songs in 16 films in his career. Besides routine other singers, he got playback from Asha Bhosle for 2 films and S.D.Batish and Fateh Ali Khan in 1 film each !
In the Film Jungle Princess, Shakila bano Bhopali and Jaani babu sang the first ever Male- female competition qawwali in Hindi films. 2 more qawwalis became famous. ‘ Aaj kyun hum se parda hai’ from Sadhana and ‘ Hamen to loot liya’ from the film Al Hilal.
from this year FilmFare awards started for Lyricists and singers (common for male and female). This year’s awards went to Salil Chaudhari,-MD., Shailendra-Lyricist and Lata Mangeshkar-Singer. Song ‘ Suhana safar ‘ from the film Madhumati was the No. 1 song in Binaca Geetmala ratings for 1958.

The 1958 Hindi film Hathkadi-1958 is a crime-drama thriller directed by Sudarshan Bhatia, starring Motilal, Shakeela, and Jabeen Jalil. The plot follows an innocent man forced into a life of crime by societal tragedy and financial desperation. Madan lives a peaceful, middle-class life in Delhi with his aging mother and younger sister, Lata. Lata is arranged to marry a man named Santosh. However, right before the wedding, Santosh’s greedy father demands an exorbitant dowry. Unable to pay, the wedding is called off, causing a shock that tragically kills Madan’s mother.
Overcome with grief and rage, Madan vows to get his sister married at any cost. Desperate for fast money, he is manipulated by a deceptive friend and trapped by Laxmi Chand, a man who poses as a respectable businessman but secretly runs a nationwide crime syndicate. Laxmi Chand sends Madan to Bombay to assist his henchman, Ramesh, drawing the innocent man deep into the criminal underworld. On the train to Bombay, Madan unknowingly crosses paths with two people: Santosh (Lata’s former fiancé), who is traveling to pursue a career as a detective, and Roopa, a woman who is secretly a C.I.D. agent. None of them know each other’s true identities, setting up a web of deception, investigations, and eventual confrontation.
The plot thickens from there as a game of cat-and-mouse unfolds in Bombay, interweaving Madan’s forced criminal activities, Santosh’s detective ambitions, and law enforcement’s attempts to bring Laxmi Chand’s syndicate down, finally ending with clarifications,Lata and Santosh marriage and a sweet end.
Actor Sajjan was a side hero in this film. He is one of those actors who started as an extra first, then as a Lyricist and then a Hero and finally a non descript ordinary character artist in films. Born on January 15, 1921 in Jaipur, his full name was Sajjan Lal Purohit, a Pushkarna Bramhin. For many generations in his family, no one was interested in music or acting. He was famous with his first name in the movie world. Sajjan did his graduation from Jawahar college, Jodhpur. He had a desire to be a lawyer but not an actor.
In 1941, he arrived in Calcutta and worked as an apprentice in a laboratory of East India Film Company. His initial breakthrough in films was as an extra in films like Masoom (1941), Chowringhee (1942). Sajjan left Calcutta during World War II and reached Bombay. In Bombay he knew Prithwiraj Kapoor from his Calcutta days. He joined the Prithvi Theatre and worked in dramas like, Shakuntala, Pathan, Deewar, Aahuti, Kalakar, Kisan Paisa etc etc. Here he came into contact with Shammi, Raj, Shashi kapoor, Omprakash, Premnath, Zohra Saigal, B M Vyas, Ram Ganguli, Shankar, jaikishen and others. Afterwards, he started doing dramas separately. In ” Dhola Marwan” his heroine was Snehprabha Pradhan. He did many One Man Shows too.
He was a writer of Poetry. He participated in many gatherings of poets. His poetry book ” Jawan” became so popular that even Nehru had bought 100 copies of it. It was reprinted four times.
In Mumbai he worked as an assistant to famous director Kidar Sharma. At that time great showman Raj Kapoor also worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. He also worked as assistant to Gajanan Jagirdar and for the film Vakil Sahib-43 and got Rs. 35 as salary.
A poet by heart, Sajjan showed His talent when he wrote dialogues for Meena -1944 and lyrics for Door Chalen -1946, Jail Yatra-47 and Dhanyavad -1948.
His acting debut film was Mera Suhag-47. After that Bombay Theatre’s Muqaddar was released in 1950. His heroine was Nalini Jayvant. As a Hero, he worked with Geeta Bali,Nutan,Nimmi,Shyama,Shakila, Nalini Jaywant etc etc.
Now Sajjan was well established in the film world. In 1950s- 60s Sajjan acted as hero or side-hero in films like, Sainya, Rail Ka Dibba, Bahana, Sheesha, Malkin, Nirmohi, Kasturi, Mehmaan, Lagan, Girl School, paridhaan, Do Dulhe, Ghar-Ghar Mein Diwali, Haa-Haa-Hee-Hee-Hoo-Hoo, Poonam, Jhanjhar, Halla- Gulla. As a hero his last film was Kabuliwala-61 and as an artist he last appeared in the 1986 release Shatru.
An Artist of more than 150 films, Sajjan also worked in TV serials. In Vikram-Betaal he played Betaal. His other serial was Lena-Dena.
Sajjan acted in more than 150 films. Though he was a reasonably good actor, he felt very awkward while singing a song on screen. His Producers and Directors knew this and they gave him minimum songs. Thus he is on record in his 150+ films to have sung around 20 odd songs only, in spite of being a Hero in some films. After retirement, Sajjan was not in good health, but he wrote a book ‘ Ras-Bhav ‘, discussing all the 9 Rasas as enunciated by Bharat Muni’s Treatise on “Natya Shastra”. He also published a book on the Birth Centenary of Prithviraj Kapoor, whom he revered very much. Sajjan died on 17-5-2000.
