Divya Dutta is not only an actress but also a model and an author, who has worked mainly in Hindi and Punjabi films, as well as in television and web series. She was born on 25 September 1977 in Ludhiana, Punjab. She was brought up mainly by her mother, Nalini Dutta, after her father died when Divya was young. Dutta began her career as a model in Punjab before entering the Hindi film industry.
Divya Dutta made her Hindi film debut with Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna (1994). She followed this with films such as Surakshaa (1995), Veergati (1995), Agni Sakshi (1996), Chhote Sarkar (1996), Ram Aur Shyam (1996), Daava (1997) and Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997). During these early years, she worked mainly in supporting and secondary roles.
One of the important early films in her career was the Punjabi film Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh (1999). She played Zainab, a Muslim woman whose life is affected by the Partition of India. The film brought her greater recognition and helped establish her as an actress in Punjabi cinema. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Dutta continued to appear in Hindi films, including Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), Gharwali Baharwali (1998), Iski Topi Uske Sarr (1998), Baadshah (1999), Rajaji (1999), Kasoor (2001), Sur – The Melody of Life (2002), Baghban (2003) and LOC: Kargil (2003). She also worked in films made in other Indian languages.
Divya Dutta gained wider recognition for her role as Shabbo in Yash Chopra’s Veer-Zaara (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji. She played a supporting character and received attention for her performance. She subsequently appeared in films such as Aaja Nachle (2007), Apne (2007), Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008), Delhi-6 (2009) and Stanley Ka Dabba (2011).
Her career continued to develop through a series of supporting and character roles. Some of her notable films from this period include Heroine (2012), Special 26 (2013), Gippi (2013), Lootera (2013), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), Badlapur (2015), Chalk N Duster (2016) and Gour Hari Dastaan – The Freedom File (2015). In Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, she played Ishri Kaur, the elder sister of athlete Milkha Singh. Her performance was well received.
A major achievement came with the Hindi film Irada (2017), in which Dutta played a police officer. For her performance, she received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress at the 65th National Film Awards. This was her first National Film Award.
Dutta has continued to work regularly in films and digital productions. Her later film credits include Manto (2018), Fanney Khan (2018), Blackmail (2018), Gul Makai (2020), Dhaakad (2022), Nazar Andaaz (2022), Aankh Micholi (2023), Sharmajee Ki Beti (2024), Sikandar Ka Muqaddar (2024) and Chhaava (2025). Her filmography also includes work in Punjabi and other Indian-language productions.
Alongside films, Dutta has worked in television and web series. She has taken on a variety of roles rather than being limited to one particular type of character. Her work in digital entertainment has included Special OPS and other streaming productions.
Dutta is also an author. In 2017, she published Me and Ma, a book about her relationship with her mother and the important role her mother played in her life. She has also written about her experiences in the Indian film industry.
Divya Dutta’s career has therefore developed over more than three decades, from modelling and early Hindi films to Punjabi cinema, television and digital productions. She has become particularly known for supporting and character roles, with performances in films such as Veer-Zaara (2004), Delhi-6 (2009), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), Badlapur (2015) and Irada (2017) being among the better-known parts of her career. Her National Film Award for Irada remains one of her most significant professional achievements.
Inth Ka Jawab Patthar (2002) is an action drama directed by Mithu Singh and produced by Devendra Singh. The main cast included Puru Rajkumar, Divya Dutta, Sudesh Berry, Tej Sapru, Pramod Moutho, Biswajeet Chatterjee, and Deepak Shirke.
The story is centred on Devendra (Puru Rajkumar), whose life is shaped by a terrible incident from his childhood. When Devendra is a young boy, he witnesses the murder of his parents. The killer is a dangerous gangster named Bhujang Keshav (Pramod Moutho), better known as BK. Devendra manages to escape and comes across a kind-hearted man (Biswajeet). The man takes Devendra into his home and brings him up as his own son. He lives with his daughter Pinky (Mohini Manik), and he also runs a construction business. Devendra grows up under his care and eventually becomes responsible for the family business after his foster parents die.
As an adult, Devendra is a successful and responsible young man. He decides to use some of his property for a good purpose. He plans to develop the land and build a school there. However, the property becomes the centre of a conflict because a powerful gangster wants control of the same area.
The gangster sends his men to kill Devendra. Devendra does not initially realise that the man behind the attack is BK, the same criminal who murdered his parents many years earlier. Thus, Devendra unknowingly finds himself in danger from the very man who destroyed his family when he was a child.
The police also become involved in the case. Inspector Vijay Saxena (Sudesh Berry) and Inspector Pratap (Tej Sapru) are among the officers connected with the investigation. Devendra gradually comes closer to discovering the truth about the criminal organisation threatening him.
Kanchan (Divya Dutta) is another important character in the story. Her relationship with Devendra forms part of the film’s emotional and romantic side, while the main plot remains focused on Devendra’s struggle against the criminals.
As the story develops, Devendra discovers the connection between his present troubles and the tragedy of his childhood. BK’s attempt to eliminate him is effectively an attempt to repeat the crime of the past. Devendra must therefore fight not only for his own survival but also to bring the man responsible for his parents’ deaths to justice.
The film gradually builds towards a confrontation between Devendra and BK. Devendra, who has grown from a frightened child into a determined adult, finally gets the opportunity to face the criminal responsible for destroying his family. The conflict becomes a personal battle between the two men, with Devendra determined to defeat BK and end the threat that has followed him throughout his life.
The song is filmed on Divya Dutta and Puru Rajkumar. Asha Bhosle and Udit Narayan lend the playback to them respectively. The music is composed by Raamlaxman und the lyrics are written by Shaheen Iqbal. With this song the movie Inth Ka Jawab Patthar (2002), Divya Dutta, Puru Rajkumar and Shaheen Iqbal make their debut on this blog.
