‘Giraftaar’ (1985) was produced by S Ramanathan and was directed by Prayag Raaj. The cast included Kamal Hasan, Poonam Dhillon, Madhavi, Ranjeet, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Nirupa Roy, Aruna Irani, Rabia Amin, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappu, Pinchoo Kapoor, Jeevan, Jagdish Raj, Sharat Saxena, Shyam Kumar etc. Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda made their guest appearances. Probably, this is the only film in which Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth and Kamal Hasan worked together. However, there are no scenes of Rajnikanth and Kamal Hasan acting together.

This film is one more addition to the familiar theme of two or more brothers, who are separated in their childhood, gets united later to complete the revenge saga. The earlier films on this theme include ‘Yaadon Kee Baaraat’ (1973), ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977), ‘Dharam Veer’ (1977), ‘Suhaag’ (1979), ‘Garam Khoon’ (1980) etc. The films with this theme continued in the 1990s with ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), ‘Judwa’ (1997) etc.

The film’s story revolved around two brothers separated during their childhood – the younger one is brought up by his widowed mother and the elder one brought up by an adopted mother. Both grow up to become an aspiring actor and a police officer, respectively. Both meets in the prison for the wrong reasons – one is wrongly trapped for killing his lover and the other for killing police commissioner’s son who was associated with a smuggling gang. Both brothers join hands in the prison to expose their common enemy without realising that they are the real brothers. They escape from the prison. Both the law enforcers and the smuggling gang leader face conflict of interest. The gang leader’s sister is in love with the younger brother. The police commissioner’s son is involved with the smuggling gang. A lady police inspector entrusted with catching the escaped brothers is in love with the elder brother who was the police inspector before he was charged with killing. The story in detail is as under:

Kapil Khanna (Satyan Kappu), a policeman, lives with his wife, Durga (Nirupa Roy) and his two minor sons, the mischievous Karan and the younger, Kishan. Because of Karan’s mischievous nature at home, Durga requests Kapil to take Karan with him on his duty. On the way, Kapil finds Vidyanath (Kader Khan) involved in delivering illegal drug consignment on behalf of his boss, Ranjit Saxena (Ranjit). Kapil tells them that they are under arrest. During the confrontation, Vidyanath and Ranjit kill Kapil by throwing him off a cliff through a JCB earthmover and frame the young Karan for the murder. Karan returns home and his mother fires him for the mischief which killed Kapil. Karan runs away from home and jumps into a river to commit suicide. Only his shirt is recovered from the river.

Durga is devastated on a single day when she has lost her husband as well as her elder son, Karan. She brings up Kishan on her own. However, she is unaware that Karan was rescued by Hussain. Karan is brought up by Hussain’s mother (Renu Joshi) and eventually becomes a police officer, Karan (Amitabh Bachchan). Hussain becomes the Inspector Hussain (Rajnikanth). Kishan (Kamal Hasan) has also grown up who is pursuing a filmy career as an actor.

Kishan falls in love with a struggling actress Lucy (Rabia Amin). One day, Lucy gets injured in a car accident which was driven by Anuradha (Poonam Dhillon), Ranjit’s sister. Kishan witnesses the accident and follows Anuradha’s car. Anuradha is arrested on the complaints filed by Kishan. Ranjit tries through the lure of money to Kishan to withdraw the complaint. But he rejects the offer. Next, he tries to terrorise through Chutkiram (Shakti Kapoor) to force Kishan to withdraw the complaint but fails once again. Finally, he pays the hefty amount to Lucy not to pursue the case. With this, Kishan breaks the relationship with Lucy and turns hostile against Anuradha for her behaviour.

Over a period of time, Kishan’s enmity turns into a romantic affair with Anuradha. This is not liked by Ranjit. He orchestrates a plan to frame him for the murder of Lucy with a fake tape conversation arranged by Vidyanath. Kishan is sentenced to death by hanging. He is sent to prison awaiting his death sentence. In the meanwhile, Vidyanath is planning his son, Chutkiram to get married to Anuradha so that he becomes the sole inheritor to the wealth of Ranjit. The time is favouable for Vidyanath as Ranjit is against Anuradha’s marriage with Kishan who is in prison awaiting his death sentence.

In the prison, Kishan meets Karan when he saves him from the deadly assaults by fellow prisoners. Kishan and Karan become friend – the common link being a song which their father used to hear on the radio every morning during their childhood. Both narrate their stories and the circumstances under which they have landed in prison for the wrong reasons. The common factor for landing in prison is the criminal gang led by Ranjit and Vidyanath. Karan has been charged with killing of police commissioner’s son.

The story goes in flashback mode. Hussain and Karan have joined the police as Inspectors. Karan is in love with his fellow Inspector, Geeta (Madhavi), the daughter of the police commissioner (Om Puri). In their pursuits in smashing the criminal gangs, they are in confrontation with the influential Ranjit and his gang. Once both Karan and Hussain had caught them red-handed. But the Police Commissioner has reprimanded them for arresting Ranjit and Vidyanath only on suspicion. He orders Ranjit and Vidyanath to be set free. Actually, Police Commissioner’s son, Vijay (Sharat Saxena) has joined Ranjit’s gang in the lure of setting up a five-star hotel in partnership.

Ranjit and Vidyanath plan to kill Karan and Hussain who have become an obstacle in their illegal business. Hussain is called to a place in the guise of some illegal activities. Karan also receives a similar message and he follows Hussain. When he reaches the spot, Karan finds Hussain in serious injuries. Before his death, Hussain gives the name of Vijay who has set jeep on fire after dumping him inside. Karan takes a vow in front of police commissioner that he would kill Vijay and he resigns from the police. Karan traps Vijay and kills him. Karan is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The story comes back to the current status when both Karan and Kishan are in the prison. When Durga visits the prison to meet Kishan, Karan is with Kishan. Soon, things get clear to Durga that her elder son, Karan who was presumed dead is alive. She recognises Karan on the basis of some injuries on his forehand. Both brothers unite in the prison. They devise a plan to trap Ranjit and Vidyanath with a view to exposing their criminal syndicate and simultaneously taking vengeance for killing their father. In their quest, they get tacit support from Anuradha, Kishan’s love interest and Inspector, Geeta, Karan’s love interest.

In the climax, Karan and Kishan escape from the prison and prove to the police through the tape recording that Kishan was falsely framed by Vidyanath for killing Lucy who was actually killed by Vidyanath. In a police operations Ranjeet and Vidyanath are arrested. Karan and Kishan unite with their mother. Kishan marries Anuradha. After release from the prison, Karan marries Geeta.

The film had six songs including a double version song written by Indeevar which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘dhoop mein nikalaa na karo roop kee raanee’ rendered by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Madhavi.

The context of the song is that Karan (Amitabh Bachchan) has been promoted as the police Inspector which he tells to his adopted mother (Renu Joshi). She suggests him that this is an opportune time to propose to Geeta (Madhavi) for the marriage which Karan does and the song follows.
