‘Pyaar Kaa Taraana’ (1993) was produced by Dev Anand and M Harwani under the joint banner of Navketan Films and Sunico Productions, Denmark. The film was directed by Dev Anand who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues. The cast included Manu Gargi, Anita Ayub and Mink in main roles, supported by Akshay Anand, Maja Riis (Swedish), Reema Lagoo, Sulabha Arya, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Rakesh Pandey, Parikshit Sahni, Sushma Seth, Girija Shankar, Asha Sharma etc. Probably, this was the only Dev Anand directed film in which he did not act. And this was the only film which he produced in partnership with another producer.
Three actors made their debut in this film. Manu Gargi was the son of the well-known playwright, theatre director and short story writer, Balwant Gargi. Currently, he is settled in Los Angles and is involved with the film production in Hollywood. Frankfurt-born Mink Singh/Brar is from a Punjabi family settled in Germany. When the family had visited India sometime in early 1990s and being a fan of Dev Anand, they had met him in Mumbai. Seeing her confidence and screen presence, Dev Anand decided to cast Mink in his forthcoming film. Anita Ayub was from Pakistan who was modelling and working in some TV programmes. On her visit to India, she met Dev Anand when he thought of her as a potential actor in his forthcoming film for which he was yet to write the story.
The genesis of making a romantic film with new comers came to Dev Anand when he was in Denmark on a holiday. Earlier, M Harwani of Sunico Productions, Denmark had met him with a proposal to make a Hindi film in Denmark to be directed by Dev Anand which he turned down by saying that he made the films under his own banner without any partnership. However, when he visited Denmark on the invitation of M Harwani for spending some time in Denmark as well as other Scandinavian countries, Dev Anand got an idea to make a romantic film which he can shoot in Denmark. Since the film required overseas backing and logistics to shoot major portions in Denmark, Dev Anand decided to produce the film in partnership with Harwani. The story of the film is as under:
Gautam Malhotra (Manu Gargi) is the son of a wealthy businessman Malhotra (Shreeram Lagoo) and a housewife, Rajni (Asha Sharma). He has fallen in love with Chanda (Mink), a daughter of a labourer (Rakesh Pandey) and the earthen pot-maker mother (Sulabha Arya). Gautam proposes her for the marriage for which Chanda is a bit hesitant due to the vast difference in their financial status. However, Gautam assures her that his father will not go against his wish. But contrary to his expectation, Gautam’s father opposes his marriage with Chanda and warns him that if he goes ahead, he will not inherit his wealth. Gautam decides to leave the house to earns himself. His friend in Germany helps him to get a job in Germany. Chanda is once again worried as he would leave for Germany. But Gautam assures her that once he gets settled, he would return to take her along with him to Germany (There seems to be some mix-up in dialogues as Gautam eventually works not in Germany but in Copenhagen).
The story shifts to Copenhagen with a Punjabi family of Parikshit Sahni and Reema Lagoo with their daughter, Pinky (Anita Ayub). From India, Pinky’s grandmother (Sushma Seth) has come on a holiday to stay with them. She does not like the behaviour of Pinky who has completely submerged herself with the Danish culture. She spends time with her boyfriend, Kim (Akshay Anand) in night clubs, Beer festivals, song distance travel etc. Her grandmother has been pressurising Pinky’s parent to get her married to Prem (Girija Shankar) who has impressed her with his adherence to the Indian culture despite being in Denmark for a long time. In reality, Prem runs an open cannabis (Bhang and Ganja) hash stalls in the hippie enclave of Christiana in Copenhagen. Pinky rejects the marriage proposal by saying that she will decide to whom to marry and leaves the house in a huff.
After leaving India, Gautam joins to work with Kim in his Carlsberg Bear factory. One day, Gautam sitting in an open restaurant meets Katy (Maja Riis) who has started learning few Hindi words from him. Katy is the girl friend of Kim but presently he has discarded her in favour of Pinky. Since Pinky has not returned home, next day, her parent go in search of her in street meeting and entertainment places where they find her with Kim. They also meet Gautam. After knowing as to where he works, Punky’s father offers him a job, that is to mold Pinky into Indian culture by wooing her. The underlying idea is that Pinky’s parent wants Gautam and Pinky to like each other so that eventually, they fall in love and get married. It is a difficult job for him as he is already committed to Chanda. But coming under the influence of the emotional outburst of Pinky’s parent, Gautam accepts the job.
Gautam’s job runs into complications. Pinky is seriously committed to Kim while Prem is bent upon to have Pinky for him by hook or crook. When Kim and Pinky are traveling to Sweden’s border on the bike, Gautam follows them. On the way, Prem intercepts Pinky and Kim and tries to forcibly take Pinky with him. However, the combined power of Kim and Gautam forces Prem to retreat.
As the days pass, Gautam and Pinky become closer to each other and now she is undecided whether she will marry Kim. Her dress sense has changed more towards Indian culture. She skillfully avoids meeting and traveling with Kim. Gradually, Kim gets an impression that Pinky is becoming closer to Gautam and it is his job to do better than Gautam to keep Pinky to himself. Gautam is in dilemma that even though he is committee to Chanda he feels that he is slowly getting drawn towards Pinky. He writes a letter to Chanda that he is playing a big drama with a girl with a view to inculcating her with Indian traditions and hence his return to India to take her to Copenhagen is delayed.
In Copenhagen, Gautam resigns from Kim’s factory as he does not want the clash between them for their common interest, Pinky. Gautam joins Katy’s Bakery where she gets close to him. But Gautam makes her clear that while they can remain friends, he cannot give the love which she expects from him. She gets the hint that he has become close to Pinky.
In the meanwhile, Pinky has been selected to give her dance performance at the Academy of Dance and this news is revealed to Pinky by Kim who says that he has another surprise for her which he will reveal to her later. Gautam personally visits Pinky’s house to congratulate her but gets to know that she has gone to meet Kim. Gautam rushes to meet Pinky to congratulates her. He leaves after handing over a closed cover to her with an instruction to open it when she is back home.
On the beach, Kim gives Pinky his second surprise by proposing his engagement with her. Without committing anything, Pinky returns home and opens the close cover given by Gautam which reads that she should wait for him after her dance performance at the dance festival venue. After Pinky’s dance performance, both Kim and Gautam meets Pinky. While Kim is about to put the engagement ring in her finger, Gautam tells Pinky that he cannot offer her the costly ring but he can always give her lots of love. It is up to her to choose her life partner between them. He further says that once he holds the hand of his life partner, it will remain firmly in his hand at the cost of his life. This drives Pinky towards Gautam. Pinky’s parents decides to organise a grand engagement ceremony.
Before the engement takes place, Gautam reveals the truth to Pinky that whatever he has done during the last few months was a drama just to keep her parents and grandmother happy. In this drama, none of them were guilty. But he cannot go ahead with the engagement as he has already committed to marry Chanda who is in India waiting for him. Pinky is devasted and she suffers from depression. In the meanwhile, Gautam writes to Chanda with the instructions to talk to him over the phone as he is eager to hear her voice. Chanda goes to a public telephone booth where international call can be made. However, on the way, she faces a violent procession of workers when police fire a few rounds from their rifles to disperse the crowd. In the melee, Chanda gets hit with a stray bullet and dies. The police informs Malhotra of the letter from Gautam Chanda was holding when she was found dead.
Gautam’s parent reach Copenhagen thanks to Kim who has made their travel arrangements. They all meet Gautam who is devasted by the news. In this situation, Prem sees an opportunity to grab Pinky who is already low with losing Gautam. She leaves the house with the intention of committing suicide in the sea. Gautam follows her. He sees Prem kidnaping her and taking her in his car. He informs the police who track him and through one of his associate in drug business, Prem is identified as the drug dealer. After some fights between police and Prem’s gang, Prem escapes in his motor boat with Pinky. Gautam and Kim follow him in another boat and overpower Prem. They get Pinky released and abandon the boat with an injured Prem which hits the rock killing him.
Gautam unites with Pinky and tells her that Chanda is no more and her last wish was that he should get married to a girl he likes in the same way as he liked her. Kim reunites with his ex-girlfriend, Katy. Parents of both Gautam and Pinky are happy. The film ends with the engagement ceremony of Pinky with Gautam in progress.
It appears that the making of this film was an impromptu decision by Dev Anand because at that time after the release of his film, ‘Sau Crore’ (1991), he was working on his next film, ‘Gangster’ (1995). After watching the film, I get an impression that the film’s story was weaved more towards showcasing Copenhagen in particular and the Scandinavian culture in general than the romance drama. The film went largely unnoticed which suggests that it may not have performed well on the box office front.
The partnership of Dev Anand with Harwani later ran into legal trouble. After the release of the film, Harwani sued Dev Anand over revenue sharing and distribution royalties, leading to prolonged court battles before an out-of-court settlement was reached in 2002. Dev Anand said in his autobiography that his fans were disappointed that he was not acting in the film. He rued that it was his biggest blunder to enter into a partnership of two different minds – one of the artistic bent and the other of the financial gain.
The film had eight songs written by M G Hashmat which were set to music by Ramlaxman. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘jaane ke liye kaise kahoon jaan-e-jaan’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and S P Balasubramanium singing for Mink and Manu Gargi, respectively. This is the first song appears in the film.
The context of the song is that Gautam (Manu Gargi) has got a job in Copenhagen for which he will shortly leave India. Chanda (Mink) is upset as they were to get married. She is in no mood to allow him to leave India. Gautam promises her that once he gets settled, he would return to take her along with him to Copenhagen. The song follows.
