‘Aanand Aur Aanand’ (1984) was produced and directed by Dev Anand under the banner of Navketan Films. The cast included Dev Anand, Rakhee, Suneil Anand, Raj Babbar, Smita Patil, Biswajeet, Natasha Sinha, Rakesh Bedi, Gautam Sarin, Sudhir, Birbal etc. It was Biswajeet’s first film with Dev Anand and his first in a villain’s role.
There is an interesting background as to how Dev Anand decided to introduce his son, Suneil Anand (30/06/1956 – 26/07/2026) in this film along with debutant, Natasha Sinha. After completing his schooling, Suneil Anand decided to go for a Business Administration degree from the American University, Washington. Dev Anand thought that after getting his degree, he will make Suneil not only to manage his banner Navketan but also expand in a professional manner. When Suneil returned from the USA after obtaining the degree, Dev Anand gave him a separate cabin in the Navketan office. After few months, Suniel seemed to have developed an ambition to become an actor as he had joined an acting school without his father’s knowledge. Neither the father nor the son discussed the subject of his acting ambition. One day, Suniel told his father that Jacke Shroff, his classmate in the acting school wanted to meet him to get some role in his film. Dev Anand gave Jackie Shroff a small role of the sidekick of Shakti Kapoor in ‘Swami Dada’. Still, Suneil did not ask for any role in the film. At that time, Dev Anand realised that the time was ripe to introduce his son as an actor when ‘Aanand Aur Aanand’ (1984) was at the planning stage.
I have watched the film a couple of days back and felt sorry for Suneil Anand as he appears in the film when almost half of the film is over. He appears with Natasha Sinha and Biswajit in the second half giving the impression of a sub-plot within the film. The first half of the film is dominated by Dev Anand. This is not the way to introduce a son in which his father, who has been a matinée idol, has got a lead role. In contrast, when Rajendra Kumar launched his son, Kumar Gaurav in ‘Love Story’ (1981), his son dominated the scenes along with Vijeta Pandit while Rajendra Kumar did the supporting role. Probably, realising his ‘folly’, Dev Anand produced a film, ‘Maine Tere Liye’ (1988) in which Suneil Anand was paired with Meenakshi Sheshadri in lead roles. Dev Anand did not act in the film and gave the film’s direction to Vijay Anand. But the luck was not in favour of Suneil Anand as the film was a commercial failure.
The story of the film is as under:
Arun Anand (Dev Anand) is the owner of a hospitality company, Anand Hotels operating in the major cities in India. He happily lives with his wife, Varsha (Rakhee) who is pregnant. Both of them expect a son to be born to take care of their vast empire. Arun even decides the name of the new born son as Varun to be the combination of his wife as well as his names if a boy is born. Arun thinks of setting of a new company with name ‘Anand & Anand’ with his son being the proprietor.
The very next day, Arun gets a telephonic call informing him that his wife has met with an accident and has been hospitalised. The doctors reveals that they could not save the new born. Moreover, she will not be able to conceive again. She needs to be kept in close supervision because the incidence has affected her mental well-being. The beautiful dream of Arun gets smashed in no time.
Arun introduces his new Secretary, Kiran Kaushal (Smita Patil) to the top executives of his hotel with a new campaign for increasing the business. But in home front, Arun’s life is miserable as his wife has gone into depression and he has not been able to initiate with her much communication as she often indulges in angry outburst. Seeing Arun’s pitiable condition, Kiran gives him solace from time to time to keep up his spirit. Over a period of time, both becomes closer to each other and Kiran becomes Arun’s mistress in addition to being his Secretary.
Kiran gets pregnant with Arun’s child which she wants to abort. But Arun is happy with the news that he is going to become a father of his own child. He assures Kiran that he will find a way out to retain the child and at the same time she will not get blemish for a child born out of wedlock. He calls his union leader, Pratap (Raj Babbar) with whom Arun had some heated arguments in connection with union’s demand for a salary raise few days back. Knowing fully well from his friend circle that Pratap is impotent and greedy about money, he enters into a legal agreement with Pratap to marry the pregnant Kiran. 40 days after her delivery, he will divorce Kiran after which Arun will take care of Kiran and the child. After some initial hesitation, Kiran reluctantly agrees to marry Pratap.
Kiran gives birth to a baby boy and names him as Varun. Pratap’s colleagues always used to joke about his impotency. With the birth of a child, he sees the child as a proof of his manhood. On the expiry of 40 days from the delivery, Arun visits Pratap’s house to take back Kiran with her infant son as per the agreement. However, Pratap backs out of the agreement. He also point out to Arun that as per the agreement, he is prepared to divorce Kiran but he can legally retain the child’s custody. Arun leaves by saying that he has other means to take the child along with Kiran. Afraid of the money power of Arun, Pratap flees from the country with Kiran and the child to settle abroad.
The film’s story goes in the time jump of about two decades. Varun (Suneil Anand) along with his parent has returned to India. Pratap gets employed in a factory owned by Thakur (Biswajeet). Varun is admitted in the college where Thakur’s daughter, Rachana (Natasha Sinha) also studies. After some initial verbal bickering and a kung fu fight with his collegemates during the cricket match, they fall in love with each other. But her father, Thakur is deadly against Rachana love affairs with Varun as his father, Pratap works as supervisor in his factory. But she is adamant to continue her relationship with Varun. Thakur dismisses Pratap from the services for which he announces strike in the factory. Thakur brings labourers from outside. In the shuffle between striking workers and the new labourers, the factory’s manager (Gautam Sarin) gets seriously injured. Police arrests Pratap for his illegal strike and the court sends him six months jail. Thakur also evicts Pratap’s family from the quarters.
Cornered from all the sides, Kiran writes to her former boss, Arun whom she calls a ‘godly man’ to Varun about their present status and requests for his helps. Arun is very happy after receiving Kiran’s first letter after a gap of two decades. He at once decides to leave for the town to meet Kiran and Varun by telling his wife Varsha that he is going to bring their son, Varun. Varsha is elated as for the last two decades, she was always in her make-believe world that her imaginary son has gone for studies elsewhere.
On the day of Pratap’s release from the prison, Varun is present to receive him from whom Pratap comes to know that it was Arun who has arranged to shift Kiran and Varun to a luxurious house. Fearing that Varun may be snatched by Arun from him, Pratap reveals half truth to Varun that his mother was a former lover of Arun just to create hatred in his mind about Arun and his mother. And Pratap is successful as Varun leaves the house. Arun comes to meet Varun after knowing the new developments and he reveals the full truth that he is his son born out of wedlock from his mother. With this Varun gets irritated more as he thinks that despite his biological father being rich, he never bothered to enquired about them.
In the meanwhile, after knowing that Rachana still wants to get married to Varun, Thakur goes for an extreme decision. On the pretext of meeting Varun to discuss the marriage with Rachana, he kidnaps him and is chained in the midst of intoxicated elephants who can crush him when freed under the instruction from Thakur. Both Arun and Pratap have come separately with a rifle to get Varun released. Arun shoots at rampaging elephants to save Varun. Varun releases himself from the chain. Now elephants move towards Arun and one of the elephants throw him while another elephant crushes him badly injuring him. A free Varun scare elephant firing at them. Before Arun passes away, he reveals Varun that he always thought of him as the future of his vast empire.
When the truth about Varun is out, instead of creating more mental problem for Varsha, she becomes mentally normal and accepts Varun as her son. Pratap loses his derived fatherhood of Varun who has witnessed that Pratap deliberately did not save Arun when he could have shot the elephant crushing him. On the contrary, it was Arun who saved him from the rampaging elephants. Varun accepts Arun as his biological father. A shocked Pratap is unable to cope up with the emotional separation from Varun. He commits suicide by shooting himself to death. The film ends with Varun inheriting Arun’s vast empire and changing the name of the company from Anand Hotels to Anand and Anand. Varsha and Kiran stay together with Varun to provide emotional support for each other.
The film had six songs written by Anjaan which were set to music by R D Burman. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘waadon kee shaam aayee‘ rendered by Kishore Kumar, Abhijeet and Asha Bhosle singing for Dev Anand, Suneil Anand and Natasha Sinha, respectively. Incidentally, this is the only song which Abhijeet sang with Kishore Kumar.
The context of the song is that Thakur (Biswajeet) has opposed the marriage of his daughter, Rachana (Natasha Sinha) with Varun (Suneil Anand) because of his lower status. When Arun (Dev Anand) comes to know about it, he meets Thakur asking for Rachana’s hand for his son who is the lone inheritor of his vast empire. Thakur is happy and agrees for the marriage. Arun brings this good news to Varun who is sitting in a restaurant drowning his sorrow in drinks because of the breakup of his relationship with Rachana. Arun calls Rachana and Varun is elated. He puts the engagement ring on Rachana’s finger. The song follows. Kiran, (Smita Patil) is also seen happy about the outcome.
