‘Sastee Dulhan Mehanga Dulha’ (1986) was produced and directed by Bappi Sonie who introduced six new actors in this film – Mahesh Anand, Priya Tendulkar, Nirmal (later known as Aditya Pancholi), Chhabbi Dhariwal, Kavita and Arun. Rest of the cast included Rajindernath, Krishan Dhawan, Sudhir Dalvi, Dan Dhanoa, Beena, Jr Mehmood, Goga Kapoor, Ritu Khanna, Col. Kapoor, Janakidas, Kamaldeep etc. The film is a social drama on the dowry system. This was Bappi Sonie’s last film as a director. This is the only film in which Mahesh Anand played the lead role among 300 odds films he did, majorly in Hindi and Telugu films.
The film’s one of two vilains was Dan Dhanoa. I have seen him in some films of 1980s without knowing his name. It is only when I found him his good screen presence in the film under discussion, I decided to know about his background which I got from the various sources on the internet. I also feel that he must have signed this film before the release of ‘Mard’ 1985 because in the film under discussion, he was a main henchman to the villain, Goga Kapoor.
Dan Dhanoa was born as Inderpreet Singh Dhanoa in Jalandhar on 28/02/1959 to Major General Sardar Singh Dhanoa and Captain (Dr.) Paramjit Kaur Dhanoa. He completed his schooling in the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun after which he pursued a career in the Merchant Navy, rising to the rank of the Marine who navigated massive oil tankers across the globe. However, in the early 1980s, a global shipping slump hit the maritime industry hard. Suddenly unemployed, Dan Dhanoa found a new career in modelling because of his rugged looks, tall stature and sharp screen presence.
Dan Dhanoa found the entry into Hindi films by accident. Feroz Khan spotted Dan Dhanoa at the silver jubilee celebration party for his hit film ‘Qurbaani’ (1980) at Sea Rock Hotel. Feroz Khan gave him his screen name, Dan Dhanoa and signed him for his bilingual film, ‘Jaanbaaz’. However, due to budgetary constraint, the film was shelved. He later made a completely different movie titled ‘Jaanbaaz (1986) with a new script and a new cast. Dan’s rising popularity in advertising films caught the attention of Manmohan Desai who signed him for ‘Mard’ (1985) as a main villain opposite Amitabh Bachchan, which became a blockbuster. With this film, Dan Dhanoa mostly got the role of the main villain in films like ‘Karma’ (1986), ‘Aawaam’ (1987), ‘Mardaangi’ (1988), ‘Shahenshah’ (1988), ‘Tridev’ (1989), ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ (1991) etc. During the period 1985-97, Dan Dhanoa had worked in about 50 films.
By the late 1990s, Dan Dhanoa got frustrated with the unprofessional behaviour of some of the film producers. He retired from Hindi films around 2000 and rejoined the Merchant Navy. He retired from the Merchant Navy as a Captain after which he settled down in Chandigarh.
Dan Dhanoa got married to actress Nikki Waalia in 1986. After divorcing her in 2005, he married actor and classical Kathak dancer Nandita Puri in 2007 who incidentally happened to be the alumnus of the same Doon School, Dehradun where Dan Dhanoa had completed his schooling.
The story of the film is as under:
Radheshyam (Krishan Dhawan) has three marriageable girls – Anuradha/ Annu (Priya Tendulkar), Meenu (Chhabbi Dhariwal) and Renu (Kavita). Due to dowry demand, Radheshyam has not been able to finalise the marriage for his elder daughter, Annu. During one such proposal, the groom’s father (Goga Kapoor) asks for a huge dowry. Annu traps him with marked currency notes given as dowry to him. Groom’s father is arrested. He threatens to all three sisters that after his release from the jail, he would make their life miserable.
Due to social stigma, Radheshyam and his wife even talks of committing suicide. All the three sisters hear their conversation and decides to run away from home to pursue their own path. Annu leaves a letter for her parents that after achieving the success, she will return home. Her other two sisters also takes the same decision, independent of each other. Coincidentally, all the three sisters land in Mumbai unaware of each other’s presence.
Annu arrives in Mumbai and gets a job. Mhatre (Col Kapoor) was her co-passenger in the bus. He forgets his brief case full of cash worth Rs. 10 lakhs which she returns. So, Mhatre gives her a job as well as accommodation in his company, Mhatre Finance. Mhatre tries to woo Annu but she falls in love with Shankar Dada (Mahesh Anand) a good-hearted local Robinhood type of goon who tackles any type of wrong doings. He had indirectly saved her from Johny (Dan Dhanoa) the main henchman of Chaube when Johny was about to sell her to a brothel. He also prevents Mhatre in becoming too close to Annu.
Meenu, after arriving in Mumbai rescues an old man who has collapsed on the footpath due to heart-attack. She admits him in the hospital by pledging her two bangles as she does not have money to pay. The old man is Abdul Rahim (Sudhir Dalvi), a wealthy man. He is very impressed with Meenu’s out of the way help. After knowing that she has no one in Mumbai, he insists that he would treat her as his adopted daughter. She shifts in his house and also starts working in a hosiery show room where she gets romantically involved with Rajkumar (Arun), a scammer.
Renu has also landed in Mumbai and is sitting at the seashore weeping as she has lost all her belongings. Anil (Aditya Pancholi), son of a wealthy businessman, Mafatlal (Jagdish Raj) has run away from home disguising himself with beard. He is disgusted with his father who is virtually ‘auctioning’ him for his marriage for the highest dowry bidder during his birthday party. A disguised Anil asks Meenu whether he could be of help to her. She shows a photo of Anil and requests him to take her to him. She wants to propose him for the marriage after knowing that he is rich and he will not ask for dowry. The disguised Anil introduces himself as the driver of Anil and offers to take her to Anil.
Meenu does meet Anil and returned disappointed as his behaviour with her was not good (Anil was actually testing her). Anil in the disguise of a driver now proposes to marry her provided she is ready to marry a poor driver. She has no hesitation as after moving in his car, she has started liking his helpful nature. However, his disguise as a driver gets exposed as his friend from whom he has borrowed the beard takes it back. Still Anil as a rich man proposes Renu that he is willing to marry her but he has to plan his marriage after hoodwinking his father who is greedy for dowry.
Now all the three sisters are comfortably placed in Mumbai having got their prospective husbands. All three sisters separately write letters to their father informing him that they are well settled. They invite him to visit Mumbai with their mother. Radheshyam decides to visit Mumbai as in any case his family doctor has advised him to take his wife to Mumbai for a check-up due to her constant health problem. In Mumbai, it is street smart, Rajkumar who gives them shelter in his house and also reveals his true antecedents. Since he got a loving family for the first time in his life, he promises them to give up his fraudulent business.
The story takes a turn from the family drama to a murder drama. After completing his prison term, Chaube is released from jail. Soon, he joins with his gang to take revenge against the three sisters. He assigns the job to his henchman to look for Annu and bring her to him. However, instead of picking Annu, his henchman wrongly kidnaps Shankar Dada’s sister, Shakuntala. Since he has to settle the score with Shankar Dada also, Chaube kills her after sexually assaulting her. He gets her dead body thrown into a river which later on is retrieved.
Meenu is worried that after reaching Mumbai, her parent has yet to meet her even after so many days. Abdul Rahim decides to give an advertisement with the photographs of himself and Meenu with his address. Annu and Renu see the advertisement and reaches Abdul Rahim’s house and all the three sisters are united. At the same time, after seeing the advertisement, Chaube has also reached the Abdul Rahim‘s house to kill him as he is the sole eye witness to the murder of Shakuntala.
After a happy reunion, the three sisters joins together for lunch in the house when a team of police also arrive to question Abdul Rahim in connection with the murder of Shakuntala. But police team find Abdul Rahim lying dead on his bed with blood strains. Police takes all three sisters to the police station on suspicion and put them in police lock up for questioning. All the three sister, first deny unequivocally that they have nothing to do with Abdul Rahim who was a father figure to them. On the same day, Chaube meets the three sisters in the police lock-up in the guise of their lawyer and threaten them to confess the murder of Abdul Rahim failing which their parent who are in his custody will be killed. The police now intrigued by the sudden change in sisters who all claim that they killed Abdul Rahim for his jewelries.
But all three sisters’ romantic interest realise that it is a desperate bid to take onus of murder on themselves under some pressure. Shankar, Rajkumar and Anil collectively decide to investigate the matter after staging some fake drama because of which all three sisters reveals that it was Chaube who had killed Shakuntala and thereafter Abdul Rahim to silence him from becoming eye witness. With this statement, all three sisters get bail and the police team is looking for Chaube.
Shankar gets hold of Johny, Chaube’s main henchman at a gun point and forces him to call his boss to visit the house where three sisters are staying after their bail. Chaube visits with his henchmen with the intention to kill them. Shankar Dada, Rajkumar and Anil trap him after eliminating his henchmen. Chaube escapes in his van taking all three sisters hostages. After a car chase, Chaube is cornered and the police team arrive to arrest him. Three sisters unite with their parent as well as with their love interest.
The film had four songs including one double version song written by Saba Fazli which were set to music by Usha Khanna. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its 1st song, ‘aaj jawaanee aur budhaape kaa aisa hoga mel’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Aziz singing for Priya Tendulkar and Mahesh Anand. Respectively.
The context of the song is that after getting job in Mhatre Finance, Annu (Priya Tendulkar) is called by Mhatre (Col. Kapoor) to meet her at a secluded place to discuss with her a confidential proposal. At the same time, Shankar Dada is in search of Annu. He meets her and asks for the clarification as to why she has been spreading rumour that she is his wife. She explains the reason and requests him that presently she needs his help as an old man, Mhatre is wooing her. She cannot refuse his advances as she works in his office and she is in need of the job. Shankar Dada agrees to help her. As soon as she sees Mhatre arriving, she starts singing the song with Shankar Dada. With lots of running and acrobatics during the song, Mhatre gets exhausted and falls to the ground. Annu and Shankar Dada leave Mhatre to recover.
