‘Kabzaa’ (1988) was produced by Nanabhai Bhatt and was directed by his son, Mahesh Bhatt. The cast included Raj Babbar, Sanjay Dutt, Amrita Singh, Alok Nath, Paresh Rawal, Neelu Phule, Mahesh Anand, Mushtaq Khan, Kamal Chopra, Anupam Kher, Dimple Kapadia, Akash Khurana, Tiku Talsania, Disco Shanthi, Avtar Gill, Akhtar Masood, Deepak Qazir, Manek Choudhry, A.C. Poddar, Suresh Bhagwat, Ghanshyam etc. This was the first film under the banner Vishesh Films which was floated by Mukesh Bhatt with Mahesh Bhatt acting as a creative partner. However, their father, Nanabhai Bhatt was credited as the producer of the film.
The story, screenplay and dialogues were written by Salim Khan which was said to have been inspired from the Hollywood film ‘On the Waterfront’ (1954) starring Marlon Brando. A decade later, Vishesh Films made ‘Ghulaam’ (1998), almost a remake of ‘Kabzaa). Both the Hindi versions of the Hollywood film were customised into the Indian socio-political scenarios in which ordinary citizens faces the wrath of the criminals.
The story of the film is as under:
The film starts with Ravi Varma (Sanjay Dutt) who is seriously injured with some bullet shots and walking slowly towards his house. Somehow, he manage to reach the house and telephones to police to pick him urgently as he has a very short time to survive. Police with an ambulance reaches in time and Ravi is admitted to the hospital for emergency surgeries Thereafter, the film’s story goes in the flashback mode.
Ravi Varma lives with his elder brother, Ranjit Varma (Raj Babbar). Ranjit is a lawyer who works as a defence lawyer for a notorious criminal, Veljibhai (Paresh Rawal). Ever since the death of their parent, Ranjit has been looking after Ravi who does nothing but whiles away his time with his brother’s money. One day while sitting on a bench in a relax manner, he sees a girl hailing a taxi with her hand gesture which Ravi assumes that she is calling him for some help. He walks towards her but she gets into a bus and goes away. Later, he happens to see her in a gramophone record shop where she works. He goes there in the pretext of buying a LP of romantic songs which the girl selects for him. Actually, it was only a means to get to know her who has mesmerised him. She is Rita (Amrita Singh). Soon he gets a job in the same shop. But the shop owner (Ghanshyam) is not happy with his work and Ravi gets dismissed. But during his short employment in the record shop, Ravi and Rita have started liking each other.
The scene shifts to a place where Veljibhai goes to meet Daga (Anupam Kher) a wealthy builder regarding some land deal in which Daga requires Veljibhai help in grabbing the land owned by a freedom fighter, Ali Mohammed (Alok Nath). Ali Mohammed rejects to sell his land even at a higher price as he is keen to build a children’s park on his land. He withstands all the pressures from Veljibhai and his henchmen.
In between, a rival builder meets Daga to offer his help in grabbing the land without involving Veljibhai. At the same time, Veljibhai also decides that instead of land grabbing and handing over the land to Daga, he would be better off if he himself becomes the builder to earn more profits on the grabbed land. He arranges the defection of Daga’s confident (Mahesh Anand) at a higher commission. One day, Veljibhai visits Daga’s office and kills both the builders with the help of Daga’s confident.
Bhagwat (Neelu Phule), an influential politician gets to know of the land grabbing game. He meets Veljibhai with a brief case containing Rs.50 lakhs in advance for grabbing the land of Mohammed Ali. After he gets possession, remaining Rs.50 lakhs will be paid to him. Veljibhai accepts the contract. Soon he finds out that Ali Mohammed is a hard nut to crack. Veljibhai uses his connection in police who arrest him under the charge of storing Charas and Ganja in his house which were apparently placed by Veljibhai’s men, Mohammed Ali is taken to the police station from where he calls the Home Minister who was with him during the freedom struggle. The result is that instead of Mohammed Ali in police lock up, the entire police team gets suspended by the Home Minister.
Veljibhai has, now left with the only choice – to grab Mohammed Ali’s land illegally for which he requires a fresh face without having any police record. Ravi, who has lost his job in the gramophone record shop has joined Veljibhai with the help of his brother, Ranjit who works as the defence lawyer for him. Veljibhai entrusts the work of vacating Mohammed Ali from his plot of land to Ravi who intimidates Mohammed Ali by threatening and throwing his personal belongings. However, while doing this, Ravi suddenly gets an attack of severe pain in his head and collapses. Mohammed Ali admits him in the hospital where Dr. Smita (Dimple Kapadia) attends to him. Ranjit and Rita rush to the hospital and reveals to Dr Smita that he often gets such attack. After discharge, Ravi has a change of heart against Mohammed Ali when he comes to know that it was Mohammed Ali who had admitted him in the hospital. He starts working with him and later becomes his close confident.
Bhagwat has been pressuring Veljibhai as to when he is going to get Mohammed Ali’s land for him. Now even the option of illegally grabbing the land has not worked, he has no option but to get Mohammed Ali killed and make Ravi, as an inheritor of his land, sign the sale deed on a partly amount. However, Ravi refuses to sign the sale deed by burning it. It is Ranjit who saves Ravi from the certain death from an upset Veljibhai. He gives instructions to his main henchman (Mahesh Anand) to forcibly occupy the late Mohammed Ali’s land. But Ravi prevents his henchman from doing this. Ranjit pleads for some more time to convince Ravi not to come on the way of Veljibhai. At home, Ranjit scolds Ravi to such an extent that he runs away from home without any trace. After cooling down, Ranjit goes for the search of Ravi and finds him who says that the only aim in his life is to construct a children’s park on the land formerly owned by Mohammed Ali.
After knowing the real ‘business’ of Veljibhai, Ranjit leaves his job with him and reminds him that he knows all his secrets. Hence, he should not try the same trick with him as he has done with Mohammed Ali. Both Ravi and Ranjit join together to expose Veljibhai. Instead, Veljibhai arranges kidnapping of Ranjit forcing Ravi to sign the sale deed of land. After both being freed, Ranjit for the first time decides to pay to Veljibhai in the same coin which he has been indulging to pay. He walks into the house of Veljibhai and threatens him at gunpoint to handover the sale deed of land signed by Ravi. However, Ranjit is overpowered and he is tortured to death. At the time of his cremation, Ravi once again gets the attack of severe pain in the head and collapses. Dr Smita after detailed tests, diagnose as a brain tumour which is in the verge of rupture and it is risky to do surgery at this stage. He has little chance to survive.
Instead of worrying about his life, Ravi is bolden by his brain tumour as he has now no fear of death and he can face Veljibhai boldly. In the night, Ravi enters his house and steals the sale deed of land. Bhagwat who is already upset by delay in grabbing the land, gives an ultimatum to Veljibhai to meet him with land documents. He hands over the documents in a briefcase. But instead of legal documents, the briefcase contains a time bomb which gets exploded in the car while traveling killing Bhagwat. Now the only obstacle left for Veljibhai in grabbing the land is Ravi. Veljibhai’s two henchmen are chasing Ravi but he gets their car trapped in a very narrow lane giving him opportunity to set it on fire killing both of them. Veljibhai says to his main henchman that now Ravi has no fear of death, the only way to give him fear is of someone who is close to him and is snatched. Rita is kidnapped by Veljibhai.
An enraged Ravi walks inside Veljibhai’s house and tortures him at gunpoint by assaulting him in the same way he has done with his brother, Ranjit. Unfortunately, at that point, Ravi gets the attack of pain in the brain and collapses on the floor. Veljibhai gets opportunity to shot Ravi with his own gun. Assuming Ravi to be dead, a badly assaulted Veljibhai slowly limps away during which Ravi picks up his gun and shoots Veljibhai dead. Ravi walks slowly out of his house seriously injured. He calls police to come with an ambulance to admit him in a hospital. At this point, the flashback ends.
The scene shifts to the hospital where Dr. Smita comes out of the operation theatre revealing that four bullets in Ravi’s body have been successfully removed. She has also taken the risk of undertaking his brain surgery to remove the tumour which is also successful. After discharge from the hospital, Ravi fulfils the wish of Mohammed Ali by converting his land into a Children’s Park. The film ends with Ravi and Rati watching many children playing in the Children’s Park.
The film had four songs of which one song had four versions. The songs were written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Rajesh Roshan. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘heere motiyon se pahle mujhe taul sajna’, rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Disco Shanthi.
The context of the song is that after the elimination of politician, Bhagwat (Neelu Phule) and also obtaining the sale deed of land in his favour by force from Ravi (Sanjay Dutt), Ranjit (Raj Babbar) is released from his custody who is subsequently killed, Veljibhai (Paresh Rawal) is now in complete control of the land to turn himself from a criminal to a builder. In celebration of his new status, Veljibhai goes to a courtesan’s (Disco Shanthi” house along with his henchmen, Mushtaq Khan and Kamal Chopra for watching her dance performance. Towards the end of the dance performance, Ravi (Sanjay Dutt) enters and takes away Veljibhai at gunpoint to get back the sale deed of land and also to take a revenge against the murder of his brother, Ranjit (Raj Babbar).
