Today’s song is the last and final song from the mystery, crime and costume film Talaash-1957.
The film was produced by Daulatram and I.M.Anand for Anand Films, Bombay. It was directed by a veteran Vishram Bedekar. Music was by C. Ramchandra. The cast of the film included Ashok Kumar, Beena Rai, Jagirdar, Ameeta, Mrudula, Chaman Puri, Yakub, Eruch Tarapore, Shakuntala, Raj mehra and many others.
This was one of the last films of C.Ramchandra’s glorious successful career. From 1958 onwards his career went downhill. His best companion- Lyricist Rajendra krishna and his favourite consort, singer Lata Mangeshkar deserted him for different reasons. Rajendra krishna had a misunderstanding and Lata Mangeshkar was annoyed with him for not marrying him. (C.R. was already married).
Even in this film, C Ramchandra’s magic did not work. Added to it the film was also not successful due to its confusing story with an end which was not liked by the audience In a decade when the audience was enjoying interesting films with popular music and entertaining stories, it was impossible that a film like Talaash would be liked by the indian audience with better choices available to them.
1957 was the best year in the Golden Era! The best year in the 50s! The best year for melody and music! Such wonderful films came this year!!! The lineup of 1957 films looks like the selection of the creamy layer in everlasting music – ‘Mother India’, ‘Pyasa’, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Asha’, ‘Miss Mary’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’. ‘Nausherwaan e Adil ‘, ‘Gateway Of India’, ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke ‘, ‘Kathputali’, ‘Sharada’ . . . Films like Baarish, Ab Dilli door nahin, Abhiman, Bada Bhai, Begunah, Beti, Chhote Babu, Coffee House, Dushman, Johnny Walker, Miss Bombay, Miss India, Mr. X, Narsi Bhagat, Paak Daman, Pawanputra Hanuman, Ustad, Zamana. Films produced in Madras were quite popular. AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, Prasad Production’s first Hindi film ‘Sharda’, and MV Raman’s film ‘Asha’ played havoc with their captive audiences. Films from south somehow have always concocted a success formula, mixing comedy, tragedy, social message, excellent production values and above all superb music, which made their films very popular everywhere.
Satyen Bose’s ‘Bandi’ brought together all the three Ganguly brothers in one film for the first time. Later he would repeat this feat in ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ in 1958. ‘Musaafir’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s first Hindi film as a director, was an experimental film depicting the phases of life – birth, life, death and rejuvenation, symbolically through a succession of tenants in a house on rent. Director Amiya Chakravarty’s competition with Gyan Mukherjee came to an end with his unexpected demise while the making of ‘Kathputali’ was in progress. The film was completed by Nitin Bose. (Later, Gyan Mukherjee also passed away while making ‘Sitaron Se Aagey’ (1958) which was later completed by Satyen Bose. Both films had the same story and same heroine).
With the musical blockbuster ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ from Filmistan, Nasir Hussain introduced his own success formula of entertaining films and minted crores by repeating it several times, in a new garb. This film changed Shammi Kapoor’s luck, and made him an A grade actor. However, it did not much benefit the heroine Ameeta. She remained where she was – a second grade actress. Filmistan also released ‘Paying Guest’, with chocolate hero Dev Anand, with superb music and songs composed by SD Burman. Dev also featured in ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, another musical entertainer from Navketan, his home production company.
A surprise hit that year was the socio-religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song “Zara Samne To AaO Chhaliye” became the unexpected top song of the year and an iconic one at that! ‘Apradhi Kaun’ was genuinely an excellent detective story. Amiya Chakravarty’s ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ was a hit due to its superb music, though its cast was quite ordinary. ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ got the National Award. Amiya Chakravarty and Gope passed away this year. Nimmi got married. Vividh Bharati started its broadcast on 3rd October 1957.
One of the cast members of this film was Chaman Puri. Chaman Puri (02 October 1914 – 26 June 1998) was a Hindi film actor who worked in over 95 films and is known for his roles in Howrah Bridge (1958), Victoria No. 203 (1972) and The Train (1970). He was known to be a very versatile actor.
Chaman Puri was born on 02 October 1914 in Nawanshahar, Punjab to a Punjabi family of Ved Kaur (Mother) and S. Nihal Singh Puri (Father). Chaman Lal Puri was the first of five children, with younger brothers Madan Puri, Amrish Puri, Harish Lal Puri & younger sister Chandrakanta Mehra. He was the first cousin of the singer K. L. Saigal. He was married to Satyavati and they have a son Anoop Puri, who is also an actor & voice over artist.
Chaman Puri debuted in 1938 with the film “Street Singer” on the order of his first cousin singer K. L. Saigal. Then he went on working in films for nearly 55 years. He even worked with his younger brother Madan Puri in seven films which include Ram Bharose, Fakira, Aap Beeti, Chor Machaye Shor, The Train and Howrah Bridge.
Some of the films in which he has worked include Raat Ki Rani, in Sangram as a police officer, Nadaan, Bahar, Afsana, Aansoo, in Shart as a doctor, Khaibar, Great Soul, Confluence, Jalti Nishani, Abe Hayat, Qeemat, Bharti, 26th January, Heer, Talash, Paying Guest as a public prosecutor, Howrah Bridge, Pardesi Dhola, Hum Bhi insaan Hain, Commander, Patang, in Masoom as a school headmaster, Tanhai, Sapne Suhane, Hum Matwale Naujawan, Raaz Ki Baat, Hamen Khelne Do, Phool Bane Angare, Deepak, Rahul, Leader, Shaheed, Bahu Beti, Chanchal Ka Sapna, Mamta, Pyar Kiye Jaa, Naujawan, Aayega Aanewala, Maya, Nai Roshni, Waris, Insaan aur Shaitan, Geet, Sansar, Hum Tum Aur Woh, Jangal Mein Mangal, Rocky Mera Naam, Teen Chor, Chor Machaye Shor, Amir Gareeb, Mera Sajna, Chori Mera Kaam, Phaansi, Aulad and Pyaar Ka Pahela Sawan. Compiled by Suresh Sarvaiya
Apart from being a renowned actor Chaman Puri was also a very open minded and jolly person. People loved to be around him & enjoyed his stories and humor. Unfortunately, he left everyone on 26th June 1998. He will always be celebrated and cherished by his fans all around the world.
Another forgotten artist in this film was Shakuntala. She was one of the “Same Name Confusion” pair of actress Shakuntala Paranjye and (Baby) Shakuntala. For a brief period they worked in the same time frame, enough to cause confusion.
Right from the beginning of the films, child artistes were required to do roles in the films. In the initial stages and also in later periods too, girls used to do Boys’ roles ( but never heard of vice versa ! ). We have the famous examples of Honey and Daisy Irani sisters. Many child stars acted in films till they became older or were not suitable for child roles. It was quite natural that most of them wanted to continue acting in films as an adult too and many tried to become heroes/ heroines. Unfortunately, only some of them could shine as heroes or heroines, while most child stars failed as adult Hero/Heroines.
Successful child artistes are few like Meena Kumari, Madhubala,Nargis, Shashi kapoor, Sachin etc, but you can count them on fingers, whereas the list of unsuccessful child artistes who tried to become adult Hero/Heroines is quite long.
Unlike Baby Tabassum, who could not become a successful adult Heroine in good films, there was another ‘Baby’ who became quite successful as an adult Heroine opposite well known actors under famous banners and left halfway due to her marriage. Her name is BABY SHAKUNTALA.
Baby Shakuntala was born in a middle class Maharashtrian family of Poona, on 17-11-1932. Those days Prabhat film company had moved to Poona. One of the Prabhat founder partners, Mr. V.G.Damle was their close relative. Along with other children, she too used to go to Prabhat premises to play there. She was 8 to 10 year old when V.Shantaram spotted her and offered a role in the film, ‘Das Baje’-42 ( Daha Vajta, in Marathi). The hero’s younger brother’s role was changed to Hero’s sister’s role to accommodate her in the film.
It was a routine matter at Prabhat that for child roles in all films, the children of the partners of Prabhat( Shantaram,Damle,Kulkarni,Fatehlal and Dhaiber) or near relatives were taken. In the film Sant Tukaram or other films of Prabhat, all child artistes were from within the Prabhat family only. Shakuntala was very good in studies. She used to get up at 4 am. do school studies, then do household chores, attend school and lastly attend shootings.
Das baje was a hit film. Then came ‘Ramshastri’-44 ( Bilingual-H/M ) meanwhile Shantaram and others left Prabhat and moved to Bombay. After that her work too shifted to Bombay. Due to these changes, she could study only upto Matriculation. But she was proficient in English, Marathi, Hindi/Urdu, Gujarati and Kannada. At the time of shooting for the film ‘Shikayat’-48, actor Shyam made her his “Mooh Boli” sister and till he died in an accident he was very close to her.
In 1949, she was 17 year old and she became a heroine in the film “Maya Bazaar”-49 opposite Balakram. Then came a string of films. She worked with well known actors like Kishore Kumar, Bharat Bhooshan,Karan Dewan, Amarnath, Anant Marathe, Master Bhagwan, Abhi Bhattacharya etc. She was also lucky to have worked under ace directors like V.Shantaram, Bimal Roy,Homi Wadia, Kishore Sahu, Raja Nene, Gajanan Jahagirdar,Shahid Lateef etc. This enriched the depth of her acting.
Kishore Kumar was her Hero in films like, Chham Chhama Chham- 52, Fareb-53 and Lehren-53. They had a good tuning like a naughty brother and sister. Once Kishore Kumar surprised her by visiting her in her Kolhapur house ( after her marriage) and spent one day with her family. The famous Kishore Kumar- Lata Mangeshkar song “aa muhabbat ki basti basayenge hum” from film Fareb-53 was filmed on Kishore and Shakuntala only.
Lot of marriage proposals started coming for her and she finally was married in 1954 to Sardar Nadgonde of Kolhapur, a Royal family. After marriage she left films, though she had good demand and became Mrs. Umadevi Nadgonde. She had a son and a daughter. She lived a contented life of 82 years and died on 18-1-2015, at Kolhapur.
She acted in almost 40 Hindi films ( including bi-linguals) and 20 Marathi films from 1942 to 1954. She also acted in famous Marathi dramas on the commercial stage. 14 of her films celebrated silver Jubilees. Some of her films were- Das baje-42, Ramshastri-44,Piya Milan-45, Taramati-45, Bachpan-45, Bachhon ka khel-46 ( with Meena kumari), Phir bhi apna hai-46Moti-47, Tohfa-47, Shikayat-48, Seeta Swayamvar-4, maya bazaar-49,, kamal ke Phool-50, Pardes-50,Malti madhav-51 Nanhe Munne-52, Chham chhama chham-52, fareb-53, Lehren-53, Jhamela-53, bhagyawan-53, Biraj bahu-54, pooja-54, Bindiya-55 etc. ( Bio based on her interview in ” chanderi Aathavani ” by Sulabha Ternikar, obituary by TNN of 19-1-2015 and material provided by Late shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji, with Thanks.)
Here is the last and final song from this film. This is a short song of hardly 2 minutes only. It is sung by Asha Bhosle and C.Ramchandra. This makes the film YIPPEED !
