You all must be knowing the songs of Apna Desh (1972). Particularly the song “sun champaa sun taaraa“ was a big hit in that year. It was on the Binaca Geetmala List on no. 17 that year. We all agree that the place on that list does not vouch for the quality of the song but indicates only the populaity of the song.
Sometime back I saw this unpublished song composed by R. D. Burman. It has the same tune as the song “sun champaa sun taaraa“ and it is attributed to the film Apna Desh (1972). I started wondering how come Pancham composed two songs with the same tune for one film. Of course two songs with the same tune are common in Hindi films. One is sung by the hero(-heroine) and the other by the heroine like “ik pyaar kaa nagmaa hai“ from Shor (1972) or it can be so that the song is sung by a parent and child on different occasions in the film (“tum bin jaaon kahaan”). Whatever be the case they always have the same refrain. Here both the songs were totally different in their moods.
The song “sun champaa sun taaraa“ is of a victorious mood, while the song in question for today “main to maanu tohe sainyaan“ is of “pyaar jataanaa“ type. Thus, it seems quite improbable that both the songs were composed and recorded for the same film. It is quite probable that it was composed for a scrapped film and then the same tune was used for some another film. This happened quite often with Pancham and was also the case in the last song which I posted.
The tune of “main jo chalaa pee kar” from Mukti (1977)is basically based on the theme tune of Limelight (1952). Way back in the late 50’s Guru Dutt was working on his film Raaz (which was to be based on Wilkie Collins’ The Lady in White, which was later made as Woh Kaun Thi by Raj Khosla). He had roped in the young Pancham as composer for this film. He had requested RDB to compose a song based on this tune. The song was even recorded with Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar. Since Raaz got scrapped and the music was not released RDB used it for the song “tum mere zindagee mein” in Bombay to Goa (1972). As luck should have it, the song was removed from the film after a week (Source: Arunkumar Deshmukh). So that tune had to wait nearly 20 years to see the light of the day and that also as a drunkard song. Exactly the same tune from Bombay to Goa would be used for the Bengali movie Debota (1991) for the song “ki kore janle tumi”. (Source: Bhatacharjee & Vitthal: R. D. Burman)
It is also quite possible that today‘s song “main to maanoon tohe sainyaan“ was recorded for Apna Desh (1972) but then scrapped since it didn’t suit the occasion or the scenes were changed and the tune had to be adapted for a different scene. Whatever the case be, the song got scrapped and remained unpublished. Thankfully, the song somehow landed up on youtube and we can enjoy it. The lyricist is not mentioned, but if it was written for Apna Desh, then it must’ve been Anand Bakshi.
