Today’s song is the last and final song from a Musical- Emotional -Social- Family drama, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa-1972.
I have already completed posts on 40 YIPPEE songs and today’s is the 41st YIPPEE song. This has been a very tough, time consuming and difficult series for me.
The film was made by Satyen Bose Pictures, Bombay. It was produced and directed by one of my favourite directors- Satyen Bose. The film had music by Ganesh (Sharma), the elder brother of Pyarelal from the famous and popular duo- Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The assistant of Ganesh in this film was Gorakh, his younger brother. Lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri. The cast of the film was Nazneen, Ruby Chauhan, Alka, Suresh Chatwal, Vishal Anand, Paintal, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Nana Palshikar, Raj Mehra, Praveen Paul and many others. Ashok Kumar and Sahira were the Guest Artistes.
The film was actually based on “Same name confusion’. In the film, two persons with the same name were used in the story. Usually there are two “Look Alikes” used in the Hindi films to make the story interesting, but here only the same name confusion was used.
The rough storyline of today’s film is…..
Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa (1972) is a musical-emotional family drama and romantic comedy directed and produced by Satyen Bose. The plot revolves around a chaotic comedy of errors involving two individuals who share the exact same name.
One of these individuals is a middle-aged family man who is the father of seven daughters. Already struggling to support his massive family, his life turns completely upside down when his autocratic boss threatens to dismiss him from his job.
Desperate and facing financial ruin, he crosses paths with the second individual (his namesake). Driven by the need to save his livelihood and seek revenge against his unfair employer, the desperate father teams up with the other man. Together, they hatch a plan to bring down the tyrannical boss, leading to a series of hilarious misunderstandings, romantic subplots, and emotional family moments before everything is finally resolved.
Today’s film reminds me of the film “Sargam”-1950. In that film also there were 7 sisters in a family who were named after 7 Raagas- like Asawari, Bhairavi etc.
The Hero of the film was Vishal Anand – nephew of Dev Anand. His actual name was Bhisham Kohli. He had done a few films with his real name also. Vishal Anand (also known as Bhisham Kohli died 4 October 2020) was an actor and producer, who worked in Bollywood films.
Born in Mumbai, he is known for his roles in Chalte Chalte (1976), Dil Se Mile Dil (1978) and Taxi Driver (1973). He was born Bhisham Kohli and was a member of the Anand Family. He appeared in 11 films in total, producing and directing a few of them by his real name Bhisham Kohli. He was nephew to Bollywood Legend Dev Anand. Dev’s sister Savitri, was Vishal’s mother. Actor and former VJ Purab Kohli is his nephew (brother Harsh’s son).
Major confusion occurred online between Vishal Anand (Hero in Chalte Chalte) and Bhisham Kohli on several websites. They are the same person. When Bhisham could not find any success as ” Vishal Anand” he started using his real name. Anand’s notable hit was Chalte Chalte, where he stars opposite Simi Garewal and Nazneen. This was also a film which he had produced. He is credited with giving music director Bappi Lahiri, his big break in Bollywood when he chose him as Chalte Chalte and Dil Se Mile Dil’s music director. Vishal Anand died on 4 October 2020 due to prolonged illness.
Filmography….
Hamara Adhikar (1970), Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa (1972), Taxi Driver (1973), Intezaar (1973), Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973), Chalte Chalte (1976), Aap Ki Khatir (1977), Dil Se Mile Dil (1978), Kismet (1980), Maine Jeena Sikh Liya (1982) and Aakheer (2007).
Let us also know more about the less known music director Ganesh….
GANESH was the son of Ramprasad Sharma. His siblings were Pyarelal, Naresh, Mahesh and Gorakh. Being son of a Musician, Ganesh wanted to learn music and instruments. He soon learnt and became an expert Violin player. In fact all the brothers were Violinists. Gorakh was a good Guitarist and played for several eminent composers in later years.
Father Ramprasad was a Trumpet player (He had played Trumpet in the film ‘Barsaat’-1949). He was an expert in writing ” Notations ” ( Swar Lipi)…perhaps, being in the British Band had helped him. He taught this to all his sons. Only Pyarelal ( who was a part of Laxmikant-Pyarelal jodi) and Ganesh understood its importance and they became experts in this.
Ganesh was also an expert in making Tunes. It was a natural Gift to him. being a lead – violinist and Tune builder, he started his music career as an assistant to Laxmikant Pyarelal. ( Same time even Shashikant-brother of Laxmikant was also an assistant to L-P ). There was a special style of Ganesh in making a Tune. In all his songs, there used to be one player, only clapping, throughout the song, to maintain rhythm. This ”clapping ” was a trademark of Ganesh, and his songs could be recognised by this clapping.
His contribution in the initial success of Laxmikant Pyarelal was well known in the industry and many producers offered films to Ganesh. So much so that at one time he had many offers on hand and he had to say ‘NO’ to many. He started his independent career with ” Husn aur Ishq”-1966. The Mukesh song-‘Aye mere dil’, Usha/Krisnha kalle song-‘Nahin nahin’ and Rafi’s-‘Jin ki tasweer’ from this movie became quite famous. In 1966, Ganesh did 3 more films, including Thakur Jarnail Singh-66. This was a B grade film, Dara Singh in the lead, but its song-‘ Hum tere bina ‘ by Asha Bhosle was included in the “My Favourites” series of Asha Bhosle.
No composer gives best songs all the time or in every film, but some Gems become All Time Hits. Talented composers like Ganesh did give such gems, from whatever little number of films they got. These songs signify their originality and talent. For whatever reasons, Ganesh never got into the Big League and ended up giving music only to these 16 films- Husn aur ishq, Shera Daku, Smuggler, Thakur Jarnail Singh, Sub ka Ustaad, Anjaam, Ek nanhi munni ladki thi, Kahin aar kahin paar, Kundan, Shararat, Dhamkee, Sa re ga ma pa, Chaalaak, Ek naari do roop, Badnaam and Dozakh-1986.
He composed a total of 87 songs, out of which 75 songs are already posted on this Blog. Today’s song is his 76th song to appear in the blog. After his last film in 1986, Ganesh was not keeping good health and he died of a sudden Heart attack on 28th march 2000, leaving behind wife, one son and a daughter.
It is worthwhile noting that Hindi Film music is enriched not only by the famous and A grade Big time composers alone, but talented small time composers-like Ganesh-have also contributed substantially to the heritage of our film music.
Here is the last and final song from today’s film, sung by Manna Dey and chorus. It makes the film YIPPEED !
