The sudden demise of Nana Patekar on October 08, 2026, at Goa prompted me to watch his recent films which I have not so far watched with an intention to write a tributory article on him. I was looking for a film which broadly reflected his real personality. Of course, some of his films do reflect some shades of his real personality in films like ‘Ankush’ (1986), ‘Prahar’ (1991), ‘Khamoshi’ (1996) and perhaps few more films which I have not watched.
One of his recent films, which I watched today (October 10th) has given me that kind of a feeling as to how Nana Patekar would have expressed in his real life. Incidentally, this film was majorly shot in Goa, the place where Nana Patekar spent his last few days at his residence. And the film is ‘Tadkaa’ (2022) which has become obscure in less than 4 years from its release on OTT platform. Apart from his love for food as shown in the film, in real life, Nana Patekar was known to be a foodie who liked to cook food. Murli Sharma who acted with Nana Patekar in this film in the role of his close buddy had shares his experience on the set of this film during which Nana used to bring for him every day, the soaked almonds and papaya for eating.
Some of Nana Patekar’s dialogues with Murli Sharma in this film give me an impression that it is not his role in this film but a real Nana Patekar is giving his sermon to him. I have attached that part of his dialogues with the video clip of the background song which in reality follows soon after the end of his dialogues in the film. This is Nana Patekar in real life as I understand from his interactions with the interviewers on some TV shows, including ‘Aap Ki Adaalat’. Incidentally, Nana Patekar has admitted in an interview that he wrote his roles in all the films he worked and he was involved with all the aspects of his films. This was known to the filmmakers before they signed him.
I pay my tribute to one of the jewels of Indian cinema and a down-to-earth man through his film, ‘Tadkaa’ (2022) which broadly reflects the real Nana Patekar insofar as most of his dialogues are concerned. There are shortcomings in every human being and Nana Patekar is not an exception. But that has not eclipse his greatness as a brilliant actor and a low-profile philanthropist especially for drought affected farmers in Maharashtra. In an interview, Nana Patekar has revealed that he took to theare as he felt during his childhood that he was an unwanted child (beacuse his two elders brothers were fair and good looking while he was dark with an avrage look) during his childhood days which pevented him to express himself confidently in the family. Theatre gave him the power to express himself which got him attention.
‘Tadkaa’ (2022) was produced by Prakash Raj and Essel Vision and was directed by Prakash Raj. The cast included Nana Patekar, Taapasee Pannu, Shriya Saran, Ali Fazal, Iravati Harshe, Murli Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Lillete Dube, Navin Kaushik etc. The film is an official remake of Malayalam film, ‘Salt N’ Pepper’ (2011) which belongs to romantic comedy genre. The Malayalam film became a run away hit. Prakash Raj, the Kannada producer-director-actor took the rights of the Malayalam film to remake it in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu simultaneously in which he also acted. The remade films in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu were released in 2014. Later, he took the rights for making the film in Hindi.
Prakash Raj started the shooting of ‘Tadkaa’ (2022) in 2016 with the intention of the film’s release sometime in 2017. However, the film got embroiled in monetary and legal disputes. There were reports of cheques bouncing of the production house. resulting in delay of the shooting. Finally, the film got completed but the financial grievances of the main actors did not get fully resolved. As a result, the main female actors boycotted the dubbing and their voices were dubbed by dubbing artists. Because of the prolonged litigation and the negative press publicity, the film distributors refrained from showing interest in distributing the film for the theatrical release. Finally, the film was released on OTT platform in November 2022 without any publicity and marketing efforts. The film’s songs on the film’s sound tracks were not released on albums.
The gist of the film’s story is as under:
The film is about a food loving archaeologist, Tukaram (Nana Patekar) and the radio jockey, Madura (Shriya Saran) who develop deep feelings for each other through a ‘wrong number’ phone conversations without even meeting in person. Both have gone through the process of finding their respective life partners umpteen times, But they have not able to get the partners of their choices. In this process, they have reached to their middle age.
With this background when the time comes for both of them to meet in person, they suffers from the anxiety syndrome and inferiority complex because both are of middle age and each thinks of other as a young stranger. Tukaram, instead of him, sends his young nephew, Siddharth (Ali Fazal) in the guise of Tukaram to meet her. Madura, also afraid of the same anxiety and of ‘what the society will react’ to her romance at middle age, sends her younger friend, Nicole (Taapasee Pannu) in the guise of Madhura.
After they continue to go on dates pretending to be Tukaram and Madhura they fall in love with their fake identities. One day, their real identities get exposed to each other. But now their feelings for each other in their identities as Siddharth and Nicole have become real. They also suffer from guilt conscience as each one thinks that he/she is ‘hijacking’ the love interest of his uncle/her friend. They are struggling as to how to disclose their real identities and the anxieties as to how each one will react to the deception they played.
Finally, Siddharth and Nicole decide to unmask the real identities of Tukaram and Madhura. On the other side, Urmi (Iravati Harshe) has been acting as Tukaram’s ‘counselor’ while Samantha (Lillete Dube) has been doing the same job for Madhura. Both are emphasising them to talk to each other and once for all decide either way so that the anxieties go out of their system. Tukaram and Madhura gather the strength to face each other and get mentally prepare for hearing ‘no’ from each other during their face-to-face meeting. The venue for both younger and the elder couple is at a ruined fort with a damaged church in Old Goa. Finding each other that they are of the same age group having a common passion for food, Tukaram and Madhura are happy to be united. So are Siddharth and Nicole despite their initial deception roles. The ruined fort becomes the venue for a happy union for both the elder and young couples.
The film had three songs written by Puneet Sharma (2) and Kumaar (1) which were set to music by Anup Rubens(2) and Vivek Kar(1). The film makes a debut on the Blog with its 1st song, ‘yaadon ke paakhi kaheen udd jaao’ rendered by Anup Rubens and Pony Verma. The song is written by Puneet Sharma which is set to music by Anup Rubens. It is a background song picturised on Nana Patekar, Shriya Saran and Iravati Harshe. Anup Rubens is a prominent Telegu music director and playback singer while Pony (Rashmi) Verma is mainly a choreographer in Hindi films. She is the wife of film’s director, Prakash Raj.
The context of the song is that Tukaram (Nana Patekar) has come back after rejecting a marriage proposal. His close friend, Tebli Singh (Murli Sharma) gives him sarcastic reactions which prompts Tukaram to give him a long sermon. Tebli Singh is speechless because whatever Tukaram has said made sense. At the end of the sermon, Tukaram leaves by saying him ‘I am a weak person, can you understand? Be my friend. This is what I am’. The short background song follows. Towards the end of the song, Urmi (Iravati Harshe), Tukaram’s colleague in his archaeological work offers him a water bottle for washing his face and coaxing him to personally meet Madhura.
