Today’s song is the last and final song from a Crime/ Social film Umar Qaid-1975.

The film, made under the banner of Gautam pictures, bombay was directed by Sikander khanna. Music was by Sonik-Omi, ably assisted by Uttam Singh and Raj Sonik-son of Omi i.e Om Prakash Sonik. Lyricist was Gulshan Bawra. The cast of the film included Sunil Dutt, Vinod mehra, Reena Roy, Maushami Chatterjee, Jeetendra in a special role, Asrani, Om Shivpuri, Ram Mohan, Birbal and many others.

The film had a good story and star actors but poor direction and below average music pulled its performance at the Box office. The year 1975 was full of All time great films like Sholay, Jai Santoshi maa, Deewar, Sanyasi, Julie, Pratidnya, Geet Gaata Chal, Mausam, Chhoti si Baat, Rafoo chakkar, Nishant, khushboo, mili, and kagaz ki nao. They all stole the limelight and Umar Qaid-1975 was nowhere in the race. All these films had better directors, stories and excellent music too.

Let us now see the story of the film Umar Qaid-1975…….

The story centres on Vinod Verma (Vinod Mehra), an honest customs officer living a happy life with his family and in love with Dr. Bharati. His life takes a dark turn when he clashes with a notorious smuggler, KK (Kamalkanth), and his criminal associate Jakha. To fight the smugglers, a tough but morally conflicted man named Raja is brought into the picture. Raja is deeply devoted to his blind sister, Laxmi. However, tragedy strikes when KK betrays Raja and brutally assaults and kills Laxmi. Enraged, Raja kills KK in revenge.

Unfortunately, circumstances and manipulation lead to Vinod being falsely accused of KK’s murder, and he is sentenced to life imprisonment.

In jail, Vinod meets Raja (Sunil Dutt) (who is earlier imprisoned as well) and another inmate, Akbar (Jeetendra). Initially hostile, Vinod and Raja gradually develop mutual respect. Raja, burdened by guilt and a sense of justice, resolves to prove Vinod’s innocence.

The three prisoners eventually escape, though Akbar sacrifices his life to help the others. Outside, Raja begins to atone for his past actions—protecting Vinod’s family and confronting the real villains.

As the truth comes out, Vinod realises Raja is not a villain but a man shaped by tragedy. In the end, Raja surrenders to the law and accepts punishment, while Vinod is reunited with his family and cleared of wrongdoing.(Thanks to Satyajit Rajurkar ji).

The 1975 Hindi action thriller Umar Qaid—directed by Sikandar Khanna and produced by V.K. Sobti under Gautam Pictures—had several interesting behind-the-scenes facts and production trivia associated with its making:

The film gained considerable attention in the industry due to a highly realistic fight sequence between Sunil Dutt and Vinod Mehra. Mehra suggested to the legendary action director Veeru Devgan that he and Sunil Dutt should choreograph and work out their own action movements for the scene.

However, during filming, both actors got so intensely immersed in the choreography that they locked up and fiercely refused to let go. The production crew ultimately had to step in and physically pull the two stars apart. The brawl left Sunil Dutt with a deep cut on his hand and Vinod Mehra with a severely swollen shoulder, though both laughed it off later due to their immense mutual respect.

The movie was officially launched on September 27, 1973, under the working title “Jail Apna Des” before being renamed ‘Umar Qaid’ closer to its release. Jeetendra appeared in the film in a special extended guest appearance as Akbar. He reportedly took on the role because the film was being mounted by his brother-in-law. This project marked the very first time Sunil Dutt and Jeetendra shared screen space. The duo, along with Vinod Mehra, went on to form a popular combination, later starring together in major multi-starrer hits like Nagin (1976) and Jaani Dushman (1979).

A musical sequence featuring Reena Roy was fully shot and edited for Umar Qaid but was eventually left on the cutting room floor. The unused song footage was later recycled and integrated into the film Faqeer Badshah. The film’s background score heavily borrowed international music trends of the era. Sound designers utilized the famous theme music from the 1971 American neo-noir film Shaft (composed by Isaac Hayes), specifically using tracks like “Pursuit of the Pimpmobile” during high-stakes scenes.

During this phase of her career, Reena Roy was relatively new to the Hindi film industry. She frequently spoke in later interviews about her deep gratitude toward co-star Sunil Dutt, noting that he actively championed her talent and personally recommended her name to multiple mainstream directors at the time.

One of the actors in this film was Ram Mohan. Not much is known about him, who was also an active worker for the welfare of the small and big actors of the Hindi films.

Ram Mohan Sharma ,a young, handsome lad from Ambala. Born in Ambala on 2-11-1929, Ram Mohan Sharma was a graduate (B.A.) and had come to Bombay in 1945 in search of a career in Cinema.

The youngster, who was in his early twenties ,with fair colour ,curly hairs & sharp features had approached him to get work in movies as an actor. Jagdish Sethi found him sincere and gave him a supporting role in Jaggu (52) ,which he was to make. The movie had very good music , scored by Hansraj Behl & it had moderate success ,when released. Later, Ram Mohan got small roles in few movies & in 1954 , Sethi Sahab took him in the romantic role opposite Shyama in Pensioner . The movie did not do well & it was the end of Ram Mohan’s career as Hero.

Life goes on and he decided to accept any role offered to him & soon he was a known name in the film circle . In Do Behne (1959) ,which had Shyama in a double role, Ram Mohan enacted the role of villain, which gave his career a big boost as a bad man . Later he came in contact with Sunil Dutt & Nargis & forged a permanent friendship with them. Although Ram Mohan mostly got roles of tough characters ,inside he was soft hearted .He was a member of film artists association. He requested Sunil Dutt Ji who was feeling depressed after Nargis Ji passed away, to help the ‘Have Nots’ of the film industry.

Virtually an encyclopaedia of the film industry, Ram Mohan knew every technician, junior artists as well as old & forgotten artists ,who needed help. Whenever they both were free ,they used to visit the ailing artists in Hospital or their residences ,to give them moral / financial support. Rajan Haksar ,who was in a charity hospital ,after failure of his kidneys ,both benevolent persons visited the hapless artist to boost his spirit . Ram Mohan was confidant of Asha Parekh ,the kind hearted lady who was president of the Artists Association & they together helped many artists ,who were in dire need of assistance.

Ram Mohan was Vice president of CINTAA ( Cine and TV artists Assn.) for 4 years and Secretary for 6 years. Ram Mohan Ji had a high reputation everywhere and when he came to know about the miserable condition of A. K.Hangal, he met a political leader & arranged the financial help through Maharashtra Govt ,on a regular basis. At the time of bereavement, he made it a point to help the family till all religious formalities were over. Everyone in the film industry used to address him as Ram Mohan Ji ,to show their genuine respect to him.

In his career of more than five decades ,Ram Mohan Ji appeared in more than 250 movies ( the number varies from 240 to 277), mostly in negative roles. He did not believe in self publicity & did his philanthropic work quietly. Ram Mohan Ji , was keeping indifferent health for the last six months, when his pillar of strength ,his life partner passed away. Ram Mohan Ji also followed suit & breathed his last on 6th December 2015 .

Ram Mohan had 3 sons and 1 daughter, all very well settled in life. Ram Mohan Ji, always will be gratefully remembered by thousands of anonymous film artists who were helped by him . His memories will be cherished by his admirers ,who loved his work on and off the screen . Truly, to find people like him, in this era is a rarity. Let us hope his selfless work will inspire other persons connected with the film industry to help their less fortunate colleagues and the tradition of Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam set by him will continue. He found an admirer in Gulzar Sahab ,who always referred to him as Ram Mohan Ji. Please see the credit titles of Ijazat, where his name is mentioned as Ram Mohan ji. ( Thanks to Blog – Beete hue din, and Shri M.N.Sardana ji , for some of this information).

Here is the last and the final song from today’s film. It is sung by Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Kumar Sonik (name taken by the Music Director Manohar Sonik. This was his last song as a singer after 20 years.), Mahendra Pal, Narendra Chanchal and chorus. This makes the film YIPPEED !
