Today’s post is Prakashchandrajee’s farmaish. He requested me to write a post on this song, which features Farita Boyce lip-snynching to an Asha Bhosle song. The main reason behind it was to add a new actress to the list, who has moved her lips to an Asha Bhosle song.
Farita Boyce was an actress who worked primarily in supporting and small character roles in Hindi films. Her film career appears to have begun in the 1970s, with her earliest documented appearance being in Ab Kya Hoga (1977), directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. She was credited there as Ferita Boyce.
She subsequently worked in a number of Hindi productions during the 1980s. Interestingly, her name was sometimes spelled differently in film credits, including Ferita Boyce, Fritta Boyce, and Farida Boyce. Dariya Dil (1988) credits her as Fritta Boyce, while Gair Kaanooni (1989) lists her as Farida Boyce.
The available biographical information is sparse. IMDB’s Trivia section on her states that Boyce had a brother named Al M. Harji, who was based in Toronto, Canada. It also identifies her as the niece of Olympic athlete Banoo Gazdar, who participated in the 1946 Bombay Olympics. How far these claims are true is debatable.
Ms. Boyce seems to belong to a sizeable but poorly documented group of supporting actresses of the 1970s–90s Hindi film industry. Unlike stars whose careers were extensively covered by magazines and newspapers, actresses who appeared in a succession of brief roles often left very little biographical record. The available material suggests that her career was considerably broader than her surviving biographical profile would imply. Her credits also demonstrate how easily supporting performers can become difficult to trace because of inconsistent spellings and incomplete cast records. The same issue also arises with Karm Yoddha (1992). Farita Boyce is not mentioned at all in the film’s credits. If Prakashchandrajee had not brought this song to my attention, I would never have known that she appeared in the film, let alone that she lip-synced to an Asha Bhosle song.
Although Prakashchandrajee also sent me a link to the whole movie, I didn’t have time to have a look at it properly.
The story begins with Sameer (Raj Babbar) arriving back in Bombay after his studies in the USA. The very next day he is a witness to a murder. When he lodges a complaint at the police station, a whole can of worms is opened. The underworld and the police are behind him and trouble him and his family. His family includes his father, Mr. Dasgupta (Manohar Singh), mother (Sarita Joshi), his brother, Sudhir (Javed Jaffrey), his sister (Neelima Azim) and his fiancée, Namita, (Dimple Kapadia). The film revolves around this act of civil courage and its repercussions on the people concerned. Today’s song plays as a prelude to a car-bomb attack on the family, which is thwarted by the timely warning by Sub-Inspector Patwardhan (Om Puri).
Other than the actors and actresses mentioned above we see Arun Khanna (Bhangra dancer), Ashalata Wabgaonkar, who plays Namita’s mother, Farita Boyce as the western dancer in the song. The song is sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammad Aziz. Both of them lend their voices to multiple characters. Asha Bhosle sings for Farita Boyce, Dimple Kapadia and Neelima Azim, while Mohammad Aziz sings for Arun Khanna, Javed Jaffrey and Raj Babbar. The song is composed by Ajit Verman and the lyrics are written by Nadira Zaheer Babbar (Raj Babbar’s wife). The film is produced by Vinod and Kishan Babbar (Raj Babbar’s brother) and directed by Dayal Nihalini. With this song Farita Boyce and the movie Karm Yoddha (1992) make their debut on this blog.
