In this write-up, I am discussing a song from ‘English Babu Desi Mem’ (1996). Though the song structurally belongs to Sufi qawwali genre, it is blended with a very impressive dance performance by a group of dancers. I have already given the story of the film in detail in this article which appeared on the Blog a few days back. So, I give below only the gist of the story to recapitulate the background.
In this film, Shah Rukh Khan has a triple role in Mayur family – father and his two sons.
Mayur family based in London run one of the biggest business empire in the UK. While Hari Mayur is a pilot by his hobby and has a deep affection for India, Vikram Mayur is like his father Gopal who has a negative view about India. Hari escapes to India to avoid marrying a girl chosen by his father and marries a girl who has saved him after his plane crashes near Arabian sea coast. A son, Nandu (Sunny Singh) is born to them. A house fire during Deewali kills Hari and his wife, leaving little Nandu orphaned. He is being taken care by Hari’s sister-in-law, Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre). She works as a bar dancer for a living.
Eight years later, Vikram (Shah Rukh Khan) arrives in India when he learns from a family lawyer (Saeed Jaffrey) that his late brother had a son in Mumbai. He conveys to the lawyer that Nandu being the rightful heir to the Mayur family, he intends to take back with him to London. Bijuriya does not want to part with Nandu. To protect him from Vikram, she disguises herself as a queen who is the royal guardian of Nandu. Vikram falls in love with her. But her true identity as a bar dancer gets exposed when Vikram watches her dance ina restaurant. Vikram is fully resolved to take Nandu back to London when he comes to know from him that he bunks school does some odd works to save money for Bijuriya’s marriage. Both Vikram and Bijuriya feign that they are in love with each other with the intention of claiming/retaining Nandu in their respective fold. During their romance drama, a local goon, Bheema (Kiran Kumar) targets Bijuriya first to force her to dance for him and later to rape her. However, Vikram saves her.
Finally, Vikram gets the court verdict in his favour as the legal guardian of Nandu. Vikram gets ready to take the flight to London accompanied by Nandu. However, just before the boarding of the flight, Nandu turns back insisting on going back to Bijuriya when he sees his toys in the suitcase sent by Bijuriya. Knowing that Nandu cannot live without Bijuriya and also the fact that Vikram has also fallen in love with Bijuriya for her unstinted devotion to Nandu, Vikram marries Bijuriya and returns to London with her and Nandu.
The film had seven songs written by Yogesh (6) and Rani Malik (1) which were set to music by Nikhil-Vinay (Nikhil Kamath – Vinya Tiwari). One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘kaise mukhde se nazaren hataaun’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Sonali Bendre. The mukhda of the qawwali song is almost an adaptation, both in term of the tune and lyrics of a very popular Punjabi qawwali, kiwen mukhde to nazra hataawa tere vich rab disda rendered by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Lyricist Yogesh has written the new lyrics of the antaras keeping in view the context of the song.
Generally, Sufi qawwali is the spiritual manifestation of the God (Spiritual love). In most of the filmy qawwalis, for the listeners, the line between spiritual love and the romantic love is deliberately blurred to give an alternative interpretation that he sees in his romantic partner the same divinity as the God. But the qawwali under discussion is unique because instead of romantic partner, the singer sees in Nandu (Sunny Singh) the divinity in him. The proof is that when Sonali Bendre sings, the visuals of Sunny Singh is occasionally splashed to show to the audience her deepest mother-like bond with him.
The context of the song is that Vikram (Shah Rukh Khan) is successful in getting the custody of his nephew, Nandu (Sunny Singh) and he is flying back to London with him. Ever since the death of his parents, Nandu has been looked after by Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre), the sister-in-law of Vikram’s elder brother. There is a great attachment between Nandu and Bijuriya. Nandu has told her that she should not come to the airport to see him off to avoid emotional upheaval. During this period, she delivers through Vikram’s lawyer (Saeed Jaffrey) a suitcase full of his toys and the money Vikram has given her. Soon, she is kidnapped by Bheema’s goons to give a mujra performance exclusive for him. At the crescendo of the qawwali, Bijuriya tries to consume poison but Bheema (Kiran Kumar) foils her attempt.
This is the first song to appear on the Blog in which Sonali Bendre lip syncs in Asha Bhosle’s voice.
