Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-15
This post of mine sent in the end of october is coming after a long gap. If it gets published in Novemeber’2026 then my score for the last three months viz Aug’26, Sep’26 and Oct’26 will be ‘one post a month’. In my journey with this blog I never imagined coming across a situation like this. But then sometimes things are beyond our control. When I sat down to complete this half-done write-up many things were going through my mind. There are many half-done write-ups waiting to be cfinished for final presentation. This post is one of them.
My last post on the blog was a Pancham composition and it was posted on 08.10.2026. The song I presented in that post was from the movie ‘Biwi-O-Biwi-1981’ where the lead actor pair was Randhir Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon.
Incidentally, the song being discussed in this post is from a movie where Randhir Kapoor is again the lead actor. This movie is ‘Harjaayee-1981’. His female co-star in this movie is Tina Munim.
‘Harjaayee-1981’ or ‘Harjaai-1981’,a social movie was directed by Ramesh Bahl for Sonnar Films, Bombay. Sam Sugnu and N-Jethwani were the producers of this movie. It had Shammi Kapoor, Mala Sinha, Randhir Kapoor, Tina Munim, Hari Shivdasani, Iftekhar, Sunder, Rajendra Nath, Sharat Saxena, Mahavir Shah, Ravi Beri, Aditya, Dharmveer, Vijay, Siddhu and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.04.1981.
‘Harjaayee-1981’ has eight songs (including one multiple version song). The lyricists for this movie are Gulshan Bawra(two songs), Vithhalbhai Patel(two songs) and Nida Fazli(four songs). Music for this movie was composed by Rahul Dev Burman. The music of this movie, again as for many RD Burman movies from the eighties, is overall a very good musical score. However the songs from this movie remain lesser heard songs and they were forgotten with time, possibly because the movie didn’t perform well at the box-office.
Here is a brief about this movie given by our Mr Satyajit Rajurkar in his post presenting this song ‘tujh saa haseen dekhaa naa kaheen’ on this blog.
Ajay Nath (Randhir Kapoor) is a mischievous young man who often tricks his parents in order to enjoy life freely. When he wants permission to go on a holiday to Kashmir with friends, he asks the family doctor, Dr. Panjabi, to lie to his father and say that Ajay is terminally ill with cancer. Believing his son is dying, Ajay’s father becomes sympathetic and grants him permission.
During this trip Ajay meets Geeta Chopra (Tina Munim), a kind-hearted college girl who is already romantically involved with a young man named Shyam. Ajay falls deeply in love with her. Because Ajay’s father thinks his son is seriously ill, he requests Geeta to show compassion toward Ajay and spend time with him so that his last days may be happy. Out of sympathy she befriends him.
Gradually, Geeta begins to see Ajay’s good nature behind his mischievous personality. Their friendship turns into genuine love, and the two decide that they want to marry. However, just when their relationship becomes serious, shocking news arrives: doctors now suspect that Ajay may actually have cancer for real and may only have a short time to live.
This revelation changes everything. Both Ajay’s family and Geeta’s family oppose the marriage because they do not want Geeta to become a widow shortly after the wedding. Ajay and Geeta are then forced to confront painful choices between love, duty, and the uncertain future. The climax revolves around whether Ajay truly has the fatal illness or whether the situation is yet another twist caused by his earlier prank—and whether the lovers will be able to unite despite the opposition and tragedy surrounding them.
Six songs from the movie, that can be considered good and very good songs, have been posted on this blog. Today I am presenting the seventh song from this movie.
Gulshan Bawra is the lyricist. This Rahul Dev Burman composition is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. The song is lip synced by the lead pair of Randhir Kapoor and Tina Munim.
Let us now listen to this lovely hummable song …
(Note :-According to information available online ‘Kherishu-Varishu’ are Kashmiri language words and their meaning is ‘How are you?’ and ‘I am all right’ respectively. Knowledgeable readers may throw more light on this please.).
